Tafsir (interpretation): It is the explanation and clarification of the intended meaning of the speech. Some speech is clear and explicit, requiring no further explanation, as the listener and reader can understand it without any need for elaboration. However, some speech cannot be fully comprehended by the listener or reader without explanation and clarification.
The Holy Quran belongs to the second type of speech, which necessitates the provision of explanations and interpretations of the words of Allah Almighty for people to understand it correctly.
This necessity is the foundation of the science of Tafsir, which is one of the most ancient and advanced Islamic sciences.
There is no doubt that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) would present this speech to the people without explanation or interpretation, and they would understand it and interact with it. They would be captivated by the eloquence of the speech, and its power and authority would overcome them.
There is no doubt that people have been reading this Quran throughout the centuries, understanding and interacting with it, even without reading any explanation or clarification. For the Quran is not a book of puzzles and symbols, but rather a clear exposition and light for the people: "This is a clear statement to men, and a guidance and an admonition to those who guard (against evil)" [1].
