Al-Isra Ayah 79
99-/6504: From Zurara, Humran, and Muhammad ibn Muslim, from Abu Ja‘far and Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon them) regarding Allah’s saying: “Establish prayer at the declining of the sun to the darkness of the night” [al-Isra 17:78]. He said: “It includes all the prayers. The ‘declining of the sun’ is its zenith (noon), and the ‘darkness of the night’ is its middle.” And he said: “A caller calls from the heaven every night when the night reaches its middle: ‘Whoever has slept through the ‘Isha prayer up to this hour, may his eyes find no sleep!’ And ‘Qur’an of dawn’—he said: ‘the morning prayer.’ As for His saying, ‘it is witnessed,’ he said: ‘It is attended by the angels of the night and the angels of the day.’”
99-/6505: From Sa‘id ibn al-Musayyab, from ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn (peace be upon him). He said: I asked him, “When were the prayers prescribed upon the Muslims in the manner they practice today?” He said: “In Medina, when the call (to Islam) became manifest and Islam grew strong, and Allah prescribed jihad upon the Muslims. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) added seven rak‘ahs to the prayers: two to Zuhr, two to ‘Asr, one to Maghrib, and two to ‘Isha’, and he left Fajr as it had been prescribed in Mecca—due to the hastening of the angels of the day to descend to the earth and the hastening of the angels of the night to ascend to the sky. Thus the angels of the night and the angels of the day would witness the Fajr prayer with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). For that reason Allah said: ‘And the Qur’an of dawn; surely the Qur’an of dawn is witnessed’ [al-Isra 17:78]—the Muslims attend it, and the angels of the night and the angels of the day attend it.”
99-/6506: From ‘Ubayd ibn Zurara, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) regarding Allah’s saying: “Establish prayer at the declining of the sun to the darkness of the night” [al-Isra 17:78]. He said: “Allah has made four prayers obligatory, whose first time extends from the sun’s zenith until the middle of the night. Among them are two whose first times are from the sun’s zenith until its setting, except that this one precedes that one; and among them are two whose first times are from sunset until the middle of the night, except that this one precedes that one.”
99-/6507: From Abu Hashim the servant, from Abu al-Hasan al-Madhi (peace be upon him), who said: “What lies between the setting of the sun and the disappearance of the disk is ‘ghasaq’ (darkening).”
Quran 17:79 (M. H. Shakir): And during a part of the night pray Tahajjud beyond what is incumbent on you; maybe your Lord will raise you to a position of great glory.

And do you know why the supererogatory prayer was instituted?” [I said: “I do not know, may I be your ransom.” He said:] “Because if there is a deficiency in the obligatory prayer, the supererogatory prayer is poured [1] onto the obligatory until it is complete. Indeed, Allah, Mighty and Majestic, says to His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family): ‘And during a part of the night pray Tahajjud… a nafilah for you’ [al-Isra 17:79].”

He then said: “O ‘Ali, my Lord, Mighty and Majestic, has granted me authority over intercession for the people of tawhid from my community, and He has forbidden that for whoever shows enmity to you or to your children after you.”

99-/6511: The Shaykh in al-Tahdhib, with his chain, from Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Yahya, from al-Hasan ibn ‘Ali ibn ‘Abdillah, from Ibn Faddal, from Marwan, from ‘Ammar al-Sabati, who said: We were sitting with Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) at Mina. A man said to him: “What do you say regarding the nawafil (supererogatory prayers)?” He said: “Obligatory.” We were alarmed and the man was alarmed. Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) said: “I only mean the night prayer with respect to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). Indeed, Allah says: ‘And during a part of the night pray Tahajjud… a nafilah for you’ [al-Isra 17:79].”

99-/6512 (cont.): He said: “On the Day of Resurrection, sweat will bridle people [1]. They will say, ‘Let us go to Adam so that he may intercede for us with our Lord.’ They will come to Adam (peace be upon him) and say, ‘O Adam, intercede for us with your Lord.’ He will say, ‘I have a sin and an error; go to Noah, go to Noah.’ They will come to Noah (peace be upon him), and he will direct them to the one after him, and each prophet will direct them to the one after him, until they reach Jesus (peace be upon him), who will say, ‘Go to Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family).’ They will present themselves to him and ask him. He will say, ‘Go,’ and he will go with them to the gate of Paradise and face the Gate of Mercy [2], then fall in prostration and remain as long as Allah wills. Allah will say, ‘Raise your head. Intercede and you will be granted intercession; ask and you will be given.’ And that is His saying: ‘Maybe your Lord will raise you to a position of great glory’ [al-Isra 17:79].”

Reward them as you wish.’ So I will say: ‘O Lord, (grant them) the Garden.’ Then I will be called: ‘Give them abode therein wherever you wish.’ That is the Praised Station which I was promised.”

99-/6515: Ibn Babawayh, with his chain, from Ibn ‘Abbas, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said to ‘Ali (peace be upon him): “O ‘Ali, your Shiah [4] are the successful on the Day of Resurrection. Whoever insults one of them has insulted you; whoever insults you has insulted me; and whoever insults me, Allah Most High will admit him to the Fire of Hell, abiding therein, and evil is the destination. O ‘Ali, you are of me and I am of you; your spirit is from my spirit; your clay is from my clay; and your Shiah were created from the remainder of our clay. Whoever loves them has loved us; whoever hates them has hated us; whoever is hostile to them is hostile to us; and whoever shows affection for them has shown affection for us. O ‘Ali, your Shiah are forgiven despite what sins and defects may be in them. O ‘Ali, I am the intercessor for your Shiah tomorrow when I stand at the Praised Station, so give them glad tidings of that. O ‘Ali, your Shiah are the party of Allah; your helpers are the helpers of Allah; your allies are the allies of Allah; and your party is the party of Allah. O ‘Ali, prosperous is whoever takes you as guardian, and wretched is whoever shows enmity towards you. O ‘Ali, you have a treasure in Paradise, and you are its two-horned (eminent) one.”

99-/6516: Al-‘Ayyashi: from Khaythamah al-Ju‘fi, who said: I was with Ja‘far ibn Muhammad (peace be upon them) at night—I and al-Mufaddal ibn ‘Umar—and no one else was with him. Al-Mufaddal al-Ju‘fi said to him: “May I be your ransom, narrate to us a report that will bring us joy.” He said: “Yes. When it is the Day of Resurrection, Allah will gather the creatures on a single plain—barefoot, naked, uncircumcised [1].” I said: “May I be your ransom, what is ‘uncircumcised’?” He said: “As they were created the first time.” They will stand until sweat bridles them, and they will say: “If only Allah would judge between us—even to the Fire,” seeing that there is relief in the Fire from what they are in. Then they will come to Adam (peace be upon him) and say: “You are our father and you are a prophet; ask your Lord to judge between us—even to the Fire.” Adam will say: “I am not your man. My Lord created me with His hand, carried me upon His Throne, and made His angels prostrate to me; then He commanded me and I disobeyed. But I will direct you to my truthful son who remained among his people a thousand years save fifty, calling them; the more they denied, the stronger his affirmation became—Noah.” They will come to Noah (peace be upon him) and say: “Ask your Lord to judge between us—even to the Fire.” He will say: “I am not your man; I said, ‘Indeed my son is of my family.’ But I will direct you to the one whom Allah took as a Friend in the abode of the world—come to Abraham.” They will come to Abraham (peace be upon him) who will say: “I am not your man; I said, ‘I am sick.’ But I will direct you to one to whom Allah spoke directly—Moses.” They will come to Moses (peace be upon him), and he will say: “I am not your man; I killed a soul. But I will direct you to one who created by Allah’s leave and healed the blind and the leprous by Allah’s leave—Jesus.” They will come to him, and he will say: “I am not your man; but I will direct you to the one I gave you glad tidings of in the abode of the world—Ahmad.” Then Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) said: “There is no prophet born from Adam to Muhammad (blessings of Allah upon them) except that they are under the banner of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family).” They will come to him and say: “O Muhammad, ask your Lord to judge between us—even to the Fire.” He will say: “Yes, I am your man.” He will come to the Abode of the All-Merciful, which is ‘Adn, and its gate has a width [2] like that between the East and the West. He will move a ring among the rings, and it will be said: “Who is this?”—and He knows best who it is. He will say: “I am Muhammad.” It will be said: “Open for him.” Then it will be opened for me [3]. When I look to my Lord, I will glorify Him with a glorification such that none before me glorified Him with it, nor will anyone after me. Then I will fall in prostration. He will say: “O Muhammad, raise your head, and speak—it will be heard; intercede—you will be granted intercession; ask—you will be given.” When I raise my head and look to my Lord, I will glorify Him with a glorification better than the first, then fall in prostration. He will say: “Raise your head, and speak—it will be heard; intercede—you will be granted intercession; ask—you will be given.” When I raise my head and look to my Lord [4], I will glorify Him with a glorification better than the first and second, then fall in prostration. He will say: “Raise your head, and speak—it will be heard; intercede—you will be granted intercession; ask—you will be given.” When I raise my head I will say: “My Lord, judge between Your servants—even to the Fire.” He will say: “Yes, O Muhammad.”

99-/6516 (cont.): He said: “Then a she-camel of red ruby will be brought, with a bridle of green chrysolite, until I mount it, then I will come to the Praised Station until I stand [1] upon it, which is a mound of fragrant musk opposite the Throne. Then Abraham (peace be upon him) will be summoned and carried upon something like it; he will come until he stands to the right of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) will raise his hand and strike the shoulder of ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him), then say: ‘Then, by Allah, one like it will be brought for you and you will be carried upon it; you will come until you stand between me and your father Abraham.’ Then a caller will go forth from before the All-Merciful and say: ‘O assembly of creatures, is it not justice from your Lord to put in authority over every people those whom they had taken as authorities in the abode of the world?’ They will say: ‘Yes; and what is justice other than that?’ Then the Satan who led astray a group of people until they claimed that Jesus (peace be upon him) is Allah and the son of Allah will stand, and they will follow him into the Fire; and the Satan who led astray a group of people until they claimed that ‘Uzayr is the son of Allah will stand, and they will follow him into the Fire; and every Satan who led astray a group will stand, and they will follow him into the Fire—until this community remains. Then a caller will go forth from before Allah and say: ‘O assembly of creatures, is it not justice from your Lord to put in authority over every faction those whom they had taken as authorities in the abode of the world?’ They will say: ‘Yes; and what is justice other than that?’ Then a Satan will stand and those who were loyal to him will follow him; then another Satan will stand and those loyal to him will follow him; then a third Satan will stand and those loyal to him will follow him; then Mu‘awiyah will stand and those loyal to him will follow him; and ‘Ali will stand and those loyal to him will follow him; then Yazid ibn Mu‘awiyah will stand and those loyal to him will follow him; and al-Hasan will stand and those loyal to him will follow him; and al-Husayn will stand and those loyal to him will follow him; then Marwan ibn al-Hakam and ‘Abd al-Malik will stand and those loyal to them will follow them; then ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn will stand and those loyal to him will follow him; then al-Walid ibn ‘Abd al-Malik will stand, and Muhammad ibn ‘Ali will stand, and those loyal to them will follow them; then I will stand and those loyal to me will follow me—and it is as if I see you two with me. Then we will be brought and sit upon the Throne of our Lord [2]; the books will be brought and set down; they will testify against our enemies; and we will intercede for whoever of our Shiah was overwhelmed (murahhaq).” I said: “May I be your ransom, what is ‘overwhelmed’?” He said: “The sinner. As for those of our Shiah who were God-fearing, Allah has saved them by their attainment; no evil will touch them, nor will they grieve.” Then a maid of his came and said: “So-and-so al-Qurashi is at the door.” He said: “Permit him.” Then he said to us: “Be silent.”

99-/6518: From ‘Is ibn al-Qasim, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him): “Some people from Banu Hashim came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) and asked him to put them in charge of the charities on livestock, saying: ‘Let us have this share which you have set for the workers over it; we are more entitled to it.’ The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: ‘O Banu ‘Abd al-Muttalib, charity is not lawful for me or for you; but I have been promised intercession’—then he said: ‘By Allah, I testify that He has promised it.’ ‘What do you think, O Banu ‘Abd al-Muttalib—when I take hold of the ring of the door, do you think I would prefer over you anyone else?’ Then he said: ‘The jinn and mankind will sit on the Day of Resurrection upon a single plain. When the standing grows long for them, they will seek intercession. They will say: “To whom?” They will come to Noah (peace be upon him) and ask him for intercession. He will say: “Far, far! I have raised my need [1].” They will say: “To whom?” It will be said: “To Abraham.” They will come to Abraham (peace be upon him) and ask him for intercession. He will say: “Far, far! I have raised my need.” They will say: “To whom?” It will be said: “Come to Moses.” They will come to him and ask him for intercession. He will say: “Far, far! I have raised my need.” They will say: “To whom?” It will be said: “Come to Jesus.” They will come to him and ask him for intercession. He will say: “Far, far! I have raised my need.” They will say: “To whom?” It will be said: “Come to Muhammad.” They will come to him and ask him for intercession. He will proceed confidently until he comes to the gate of Paradise, takes hold of the ring of the door, then knocks it. It will be said: “Who is this?” He will say: “Ahmad.” They will welcome [2] him and open the door. When he looks at Paradise he will fall in prostration, glorifying and magnifying his Lord. An angel will come to him and say: “Raise your head; ask and you will be given; intercede and you will be granted intercession.” He will stand and raise his head and enter by the gate of Paradise, then fall in prostration, glorifying and magnifying his Lord. An angel will come to him and say: “Raise your head; ask and you will be given; intercede and you will be granted intercession.” He will stand and walk in Paradise for a while, then fall in prostration, glorifying and magnifying his Lord. An angel will come to him and say: “Raise your head; ask and you will be given; intercede and you will be granted intercession.” He will stand, and he will not ask for anything except that it will be granted to him.’”
99-/6519: From some of our companions, from one of the two (peace be upon them), regarding His saying: “Maybe your Lord will raise you to a position of great glory” [al-Isra 17:79], he said: “It is intercession.”
99-/6520: From Safwan, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: ‘I sought as a gift from my Lord four (persons): Aminah bint Wahb, ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abd al-Muttalib, Abu Talib, and a man between whom and me there had been brotherhood; and he asked me to ask my Lord to grant him to me.’”
99-/6521: From ‘Ubayd ibn Zurara, who said: Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) was asked about the believer: Does he have intercession? He said: “Yes.” A man from the people said to him: “Will the believer need the intercession of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) that day?” He said: “Yes. Believers have faults and sins, and there is no one who will not need the intercession of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) that day.” He (the narrator) said: A man asked him about the saying of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family): “I am the master of the children of Adam, and no boast.” He said: “Yes. He will take the ring of the gate of Paradise and open it, then fall in prostration. Allah will say: ‘Raise your head; intercede and you will be granted intercession; ask and you will be given.’ He will raise his head, then fall in prostration. Allah will say: ‘Raise your head; intercede and you will be granted intercession; and ask and you will be given.’ Then he will raise his head, intercede and be granted intercession, and ask and be given.”

99-/6522: From Sama‘ah ibn Mihran, from Abu Ibrahim (peace be upon him) regarding Allah’s saying: “Maybe your Lord will raise you to a position of great glory” [al-Isra 17:79]. He said: “People will stand on the Day of Resurrection for forty days [1]. The sun will be commanded, so it will ride over the heads of the servants, and sweat will bridle them, and the earth will be commanded not to absorb any of their sweat. Then they will come to Adam (peace be upon him) and seek his intercession; he will direct them to Noah (peace be upon him); Noah will direct them to Abraham; Abraham (peace be upon him) will direct them to Moses; Moses (peace be upon him) will direct them to Jesus (peace be upon him); and Jesus will direct them to Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), saying: ‘You must go to Muhammad, the Seal of the Prophets.’ Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) will say: ‘I am for it.’ He will go until he comes to the gate of Paradise and knocks. It will be said to him: ‘Who is this?’—and Allah knows best. He will say: ‘Muhammad.’ It will be said: ‘Open for him.’ When the gate is opened, he will face his Lord and fall in prostration, and he will not raise his head until it is said to him: ‘Speak; ask and you will be given; intercede and you will be granted intercession.’ He will raise his head, face his Lord, and fall in prostration; and it will be said to him the like of that. He will raise his head until, indeed, he intercedes even for one who had been burned in the Fire. None among the people on the Day of Resurrection—in all the nations—will be more eminent than Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). And that is the saying of Allah Most High: ‘Maybe your Lord will raise you to a position of great glory.’”

99-/6523: ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim: It was revealed on the day of the Conquest of Mecca, when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) intended to enter it. Allah revealed: “And say, O Muhammad: O my Lord! make my entry a good entry and make my exit a good exit…” He said: His saying “an authority to assist me” means: a helper.

99-/6524: Al-‘Ayyashi: from Abu al-Jarud, from Zayd ibn ‘Ali (peace be upon him), regarding Allah’s saying: “and grant me from Thee an authority to assist me”—he said: “the sword.”
