99-/2016: Ali ibn Ibrahim, in the narration of Abu al-Jarud from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), regarding: “And when Allah took a covenant from those who were given the Book: You shall certainly make it known to men and you shall not hide it,” said: “That is, Allah took a covenant from those who were given the Book concerning Muhammad (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) that they would make him known to the people when he appeared and would not conceal him. But they cast it behind their backs—meaning: they cast behind their backs the covenant of Allah—and they sold it for a small price; evil is that which they purchase.” And he said: The saying of the Exalted: “Do not think that those who rejoice in what they have done and love to be praised for what they did not do” was revealed about the hypocrites who love to be praised without having done [the deeds].
99-/2017: And in the narration of Abu al-Jarud from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), regarding His saying, the Exalted: “So do not think that they are in safety from the punishment,” he said: “[It means] at a distance from the punishment—and for them is a painful punishment.”

99-/2019: Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub, from Abu ‘Abdillah al-Ash‘ari, from some of our companions, from Hisham ibn al-Hakam, said: Abu al-Hasan Musa ibn Ja‘far (peace be upon him) said to me: “O Hisham, Allah, Blessed and Exalted, has given glad tidings to the people of intellect and understanding in His Book, where He said: ‘So give good news to My servants, those who listen to the word then follow the best of it; those are they whom Allah has guided, and those it is who are the men of understanding’ [Qur’an 39:17-18 — Shakir].” He continued the long hadith, and in it (peace be upon him) he said: “Then He mentioned the possessors of intellect (ulu al-albab) with the finest mention and adorned them with the best adornment, saying: ‘He grants wisdom to whom He pleases, and whoever is granted wisdom, he indeed is given a great good; and none but men of understanding mind’ [Qur’an 2:269 — Shakir]. And He said: ‘But none knows its interpretation except Allah, and those who are firmly rooted in knowledge say: We believe in it, it is all from our Lord; and none do mind except those endued with understanding’ [Qur’an 3:7 — Shakir]. And He said: ‘Most surely in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day there are signs for men who understand’ [Qur’an 3:190 — Shakir]. And He said: ‘What! he who knows that what has been revealed to you from your Lord is the truth, is he like the blind? Only those possessed of understanding will mind’ [Qur’an 13:19 — Shakir]. And He said: ‘What! he who is obedient in the watches of the night, prostrating himself and standing, takes care of the hereafter and hopes for the mercy of his Lord! Say: Are those who know and those who do not know alike? Only the men of understanding are mindful’ [Qur’an 39:9 — Shakir]. And He said: ‘A Book We have revealed to you abounding in good that they may ponder over its verses, and that those endowed with understanding may be mindful’ [Qur’an 38:29 — Shakir]. And He said: ‘And certainly We gave Musa the guidance, and We made the children of Israel inherit the Book, a guidance and a reminder for men of understanding’ [Qur’an 40:53-54 — Shakir]. O Hisham, everything has a proof; the proof of intellect is reflection, and the proof of reflection is silence.”

I said: How does one reflect? He said: “He passes by a ruin or a house and says: Where are your inhabitants? Where are your builders? Why do you not speak?”
99-/2022: And from him, from a number of our companions, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Khalid, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Abi Nasr, from some of his men, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: “The best worship is persistence in reflecting on Allah, Exalted, and on His power.”

99-/2023: And from him, from Muhammad ibn Yahya, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa, from Mu‘ammar ibn Khallad, who said: I heard Abu al-Hasan al-Rida (peace be upon him) say: “Worship is not the abundance of prayer and fasting; rather, worship is reflection on the command of Allah, Mighty and Majestic.”

99-/2025: The Messenger of Allah (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) said: “The highest in rank among you with Allah, Exalted, are those of you who are longest in hunger and reflection, and the most hateful to Allah among you is every heavy sleeper and glutton.”
/2026: Ibn ‘Abbas said: A people reflected on Allah, the Exalted. The Prophet (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) said: “Reflect on the creation of Allah, and do not reflect on [the essence of] Allah, for you will not be able to estimate His measure.”
99-/2027: The Messenger of Allah (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) came out one day upon a group while they were reflecting. He said: “What is it with you that you do not speak?” They said: We are reflecting on the creation of Allah, the Exalted.
99-/2029: The Messenger of Allah (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) said: “Give your eyes their share of worship.” [They said: And what is their share of worship, O Messenger of Allah?] [1] He said: “Looking into the Mushaf, reflecting on it, and taking admonition at its marvels.”
/2030: And Ibn ‘Abbas said: Two moderate rak‘ahs with reflection are better than standing [in prayer] an entire night without heart. And Luqman used to prolong sitting alone; his master would pass by him and say: O Luqman, you persist in sitting alone; if you sat with people it would be more companionable for you. Luqman would say: Prolonged solitude deepens reflection, and prolonged reflection is a guide to the path of Paradise.

3:199 “And most surely of the followers of the Book there are those who believe in Allah and in what has been revealed to you and in what has been revealed to them, being humble before Allah; they do not take a small price for the signs of Allah; these it is that have their reward with their Lord; surely Allah is quick in reckoning.”

99-/2032: The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) said in one of his sermons: “Praise belongs to Allah, Who points to His existence by His creation, and by the createdness of His creation to His pre-eternity, and by their resemblance [to one another] to [the fact] that He has no likeness. The senses do not grasp Him [2], nor do coverings veil Him, due to the difference between Maker and made, the determiner and the determined, the Lord and the lorded over; the One without interpretation of number; the Creator not by the meaning of motion and fatigue; the Hearing not by an instrument; the Seeing not by division of a tool [3]; the Witnessing not by contact; the Apart not by the remoteness of distance; the Manifest not by vision; the Hidden not by subtlety. He is distinct from things by overpowering them and having power over them, and things are distinct from Him by their submission to Him and their return to Him. Whoever describes Him has delimited Him; whoever delimits Him has enumerated Him; whoever enumerates Him has invalidated His pre-eternity. Whoever says, ‘How?’ has sought to describe Him, and whoever says, ‘Where?’ has confined Him. He is Knower when there is nothing known, Lord when there is nothing lorded over, and Powerful when there is nothing empowered.”

99-/2036: And al-Shaybani narrated in Nahj al-Bayan from Abu Ja‘far and Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon them): “That these verses which are at the end of Al ‘Imran were revealed about ‘Ali (peace be upon him) and a group of his companions. That is because when Allah, Exalted, commanded the Prophet (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) to migrate to Medina after the death of his uncle Abu Talib (may Allah have mercy on him), Quraysh had conspired against him to raid him by night while he was sleeping and to strike him a single stroke as one man, so that it would not be known who killed him and his blood would not be avenged. So Allah commanded that his cousin ‘Ali (peace be upon him) sleep in his place, and that he [the Prophet] depart by night to Medina. He did as Allah commanded him, and ‘Ali (peace be upon him) spent the night in his bed in his place, and he instructed him to carry his wives to Medina. When the polytheists of Quraysh, having covenanted and conspired, came upon him, they found ‘Ali (peace be upon him) in his place, so they turned back, and Allah nullified what they had agreed and sworn to. Then ‘Ali (peace be upon him) carried his family and the wives to Medina. Abu Sufyan learned of his departure and journey to Medina and followed him to turn them back; with him was a black slave who was fierce and bold in war. His master ordered him to catch up to him and prevent him from proceeding until he arrived with his men. He caught up with him and said to him: Do not proceed with those with you until my master comes. He (‘Ali, peace be upon him) said to him: Woe to you! Return to your master, or I will kill you. He did not return, so ‘Ali (peace be upon him) raised his sword and struck him, severing his neck from his body. He proceeded with the women and family. Abu Sufyan came and found his slave killed, so he pursued ‘Ali (peace be upon him) and overtook him, and said to him: O ‘Ali, you take the daughters of our cousin from us without our permission, and you kill our slave! He said: I took them by the permission of the One to Whom belongs the permission—go about your business. He did not turn back, and he fought him, seeking to turn them back with his men the entire day; they were unable to turn him back and were powerless against him and his companions, so they returned disappointed. ‘Ali (peace be upon him) continued with his companions, and they were wearied by fighting and battle. ‘Ali (peace be upon him) ordered them to dismount to rest while he proceeded with those with him. They dismounted and prayed as they were able, and, out of exhaustion, they cast themselves down, remembering Allah, the Exalted, in all these states until morning—praising, thanking, and worshiping Him. Then he proceeded with them to Medina to the Prophet (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family). Gabriel (peace be upon him) descended before their arrival and related their story to the Prophet (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) and recited to him the verses from the end of Al ‘Imran up to His saying: ‘Surely Thou dost not fail in the promise’ [Qur’an 3:194 — Shakir]. When he (peace be upon him) arrived with them to the Prophet (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family), he said to him: Indeed Allah, Glorified, has revealed Quran about you and your companions. He then recited to him the verses from the end of Al ‘Imran to its conclusion. And praise belongs to Allah, Lord of the worlds.”

99-/2037: And al-Shaykh al-Mufid narrated in al-Ikhtisas, by his chain to ‘Ali ibn Asbat, from more than one of the companions of Ibn Da’b, and he mentioned a hadith comprising that the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) has seventy merits in which none of the companions of the Messenger of Allah (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) shares; among them, the first of his qualities is selfless sharing. They said: The Messenger of Allah (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) said to him: “Indeed Quraysh have resolved to kill me, so sleep upon my bed.” He said: “May my father and mother be your ransom; obedience to Allah and to His Messenger.” So he slept on his bed, and the Messenger of Allah (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) proceeded on his way. ‘Ali (peace be upon him) awoke with Quraysh guarding him; they seized him and said: Are you the one who deceived us last night? They cut branches for him and beat him until they nearly took his life; then he slipped from their hands. The Messenger of Allah (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family), while in the cave, sent to him: “Hire three camels: one for me, one for Abu Bakr, and one for the guide, and you carry my daughters until you reach me.” So he did. [And among his qualities (peace be upon him) are protective care and generosity.] Ibn Da’b said: What are protective care and generosity? They said: He walked on his feet and set the daughters of the Messenger of Allah (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) upon the mount; he hid by day and traveled with them by night, walking on his feet, until he came to the Messenger of Allah (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family), and his feet were smeared with blood and fluid. The Messenger of Allah (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) said to him: “Do you know what has been revealed about you?” He informed him of something for which there is no substitute—even if he remained in this world as long as the world remained. He said: “O ‘Ali, it was revealed about you: ‘So their Lord accepted their prayer: That I will not waste the deed of any one of you, whether male or female’—the male is you and the females are the daughters of the Messenger of Allah. Allah, Blessed and Exalted, says: ‘So those who migrated and were driven out of their homes and were persecuted in My way and who fought and were slain, I will most certainly cover their evil deeds… and with Allah is the best reward’” [Qur’an 3:195 and 3:198 — Shakir].

/2045: ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim said: His saying, the Exalted: “Our Lord! surely we have heard a crier calling to the faith” means the Messenger of Allah (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) calling to faith, up to His saying: “Surely Thou dost not fail in the promise” [Qur’an 3:193-194 — Shakir]. Then He mentioned the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) and his companions, and said: “So those who migrated and were driven out of their homes”—meaning the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him), Salman, Abu Dharr when he was expelled, and ‘Ammar—those who were hurt in the way of Allah [5]: “and were persecuted in My way and fought and were slain, I will most certainly cover their evil deeds and cause them to enter gardens beneath which rivers flow, a reward from Allah, and with Allah is the best reward” [Qur’an 3:195 and 3:198 — Shakir]. Then He said to His Prophet (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family): “Let not the strutting about of those who disbelieve in the land deceive you. A brief enjoyment—then their abode is hell, and evil is the resting-place” [Qur’an 3:196-197 — Shakir].
