Its peaks are for the mountains, not for the birds?” They said: We thought they were four. Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) said: “Rather, the mountains were ten.”

99-/1458

99-/1458- In explanation of His saying: So take four of the birds, then tame them to yourself, then put on every mountain a part of them, he said: “He took the hoopoe, the shrike, the peacock, and the crow. He slaughtered them and separated their heads, then pounded their bodies in a mortar with their feathers, flesh, and bones until they were mixed. Then he divided them into ten portions upon ten mountains. He placed grain and water near him, then held their beaks between his fingers and said: ‘Come to me in haste, by the permission of Allah.’ So their parts—flesh, feathers, and bones—flew to one another until the bodies were complete as they had been. Each body came and attached itself to its neck which had the beak. Then Abraham (peace be upon him) released their beaks, and they rose, drank from that water, and picked from that grain. Then they said: ‘O Prophet of Allah, you have given us life—may Allah give you life.’ He said: ‘Rather, it is Allah who gives life and causes death.’ This is its outward interpretation. As for its inner interpretation in the Qur’an, he said: ‘Take four of those capable of bearing speech, entrust them with your knowledge, then send them to the ends of the earth as proofs for you over the people. When you want them to come to you, you call them by the Greatest Name, and they will come to you in haste, by the permission of Allah, Exalted.’”

(2:261) The parable of those who spend their property in the way of Allah is as the parable of a grain growing seven ears (with) a hundred grains in every ear; and Allah multiplies for whom He pleases; and Allah is Ample-giving, Knowing. [M. H. Shakir]

99-/1459- Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Khalid al-Barqi, from Ibn Mahbub, from ‘Umar ibn Yazid, said: I heard Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) say: “When a believing servant perfects his deed, Allah, Exalted, multiplies his deed—seven hundred for every good deed. That is the saying of Allah: ‘And Allah multiplies for whom He pleases.’ So perfect the deeds that you do for the reward of Allah.” I said to him: What is perfection (ihsan)? He said: “When you pray, perfect your bowing and your prostration; and when you fast, avoid everything that corrupts your fast; and when you perform Hajj, avoid what is unlawful for you in your Hajj and your ‘Umrah.” He said: “And let every deed you do for Allah be pure from defilement.”

99-/1461- Al-‘Ayyashi: from ‘Umar ibn Yunus, who said: I heard Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) say: “When the believer perfects his deed, Allah, Exalted, multiplies his deed—seven hundred times for every good deed; that is the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: ‘And Allah multiplies for whom He pleases.’ So perfect the deeds that you do for the reward of Allah.” I said: What is perfection?

99-/1462- From Humran, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), who said: I said to him: Do you see—does the believer have an advantage over the Muslim in any matter of inheritances, judgments, and rulings, such that the believer would have more than the Muslim in inheritances or otherwise? He said: “No. The two are treated the same in that when the Imam rules between them. But the believer has an advantage over the Muslim with respect to their deeds and what they draw near to Allah with.” He said: So I said: Does not Allah say: Whoever brings a good deed shall have ten like it? And you claimed that they are united in prayer, zakat, fasting, and Hajj with the believer. He said: “Does not Allah indeed say: And Allah multiplies for whom He pleases many times over? The believers are those for whom Allah multiplies good deeds—seventyfold for every good deed. This is among their virtues. And Allah increases the believer in his good deeds, according to the soundness of his faith, many times multiplied, and Allah does with the believer what He wills.”

99-/1464- From al-Mufaddal ibn Muhammad al-Ju‘fi: I asked Abu ‘Abdillah about the saying of Allah: As the parable of a grain which brings forth seven ears. He said: “The grain is Fatimah (may Allah’s blessings be upon her), and the seven ears are seven from her offspring; the seventh of them is their Qa’im.” I said: Al-Hasan (peace be upon him)? He said: “Al-Hasan is an Imam from Allah, whose obedience is obligatory, but he is not among the seven ears; the first of them is al-Husayn (peace be upon him), and the last of them is the Qa’im.” I said: His saying: In every ear a hundred grains. He said: “A man from among them will beget in Kufa a hundred from his own loins; and that is for none but these seven.”

[2] Al-Ḥurr al-‘Āmilī said in Ithbāt al-Hudāt 7:550/95: These seven are among the Twelve, and there is no indication of exclusivity, as is clear. Perhaps what is meant is the seventh from al-Sadiq (peace be upon him), since he is the speaker of this statement. End quote. The hadith is unknown in chain and clearly disturbed, since its apparent sense does not accord with established points of the school, except by interpreting expansion in the number “seven,” as the Arabs often use it not to confine the number but to indicate abundance and multiplication.

99-/1465- Abu ‘Ali al-Tabrisi: The verse is general regarding spending in all such cases. And this is narrated from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him). And he said: It is also said that it is specific to jihad; as for other acts of obedience, they are recompensed one with ten like it.

99-/1466- And from him: He said: It is narrated from Ibn ‘Umar that he said: When this verse was revealed, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) said: “My Lord, increase for my community,” so His saying was revealed: Who is it that will lend to Allah a goodly loan, so He will double it for him manifold? He said: “My Lord, increase for my community,” so there was revealed: Surely the patient will be paid their reward in full without measure.

(2:262-266) M. H. Shakir translation:

- 2:262: Those who spend their property in the way of Allah, then do not follow up what they have spent with reproach or injury, for them their reward is with their Lord, and they shall have no fear nor shall they grieve.

- 2:263: Kind speech and forgiveness is better than charity followed by injury; and Allah is Self-sufficient, Forbearing.

- 2:264: O you who believe! do not make your charity worthless by reproach and injury, like him who spends his property to be seen of men and does not believe in Allah and the last day; so his parable is as the parable of a smooth rock with earth upon it, then a heavy rain falls upon it, so it leaves it bare; they shall not be able to gain aught of what they have earned; and Allah does not guide the unbelieving people.

- 2:265: And the parable of those who spend their property to seek the pleasure of Allah and for the certainty of their souls is as the parable of a garden on an elevated ground; heavy rain falls on it so it brings forth its fruit twofold; but if heavy rain does not fall on it, then light rain (is sufficient); and Allah sees what you do.

- 2:266: Does one of you like that he should have a garden of palms and vines with rivers flowing beneath it; he has in it all kinds of fruits; and old age has overtaken him and he has weak offspring, when a violent whirlwind smites it, so that it becomes scortched? Thus does Allah make the communications clear to you, that you may reflect.
