Al-Hajj Ayah 28
That they may witness advantages for them and mention the name of Allah during stated days over what He has given them of the brute cattle; so eat of them and feed the destitute poor. (al-Hajj 22:28, M. H. Shakir)

Muhammad b. Ya‘qub: from Abu ‘Ali al-Ash‘ari, from Muhammad b. ‘Abd al-Jabbar, from Safwan, from Abu al-Maghra, from Salamah b. Muhriz, who said: I was with Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) when a man called Abu al-Ward came to him and said to Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), “May Allah have mercy on you, if only you would have spared your body from the howdah.” Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) said: “O Abu al-Ward, I love to witness the benefits which Allah, Blessed and Exalted, said: ‘that they may witness advantages for them.’ No one attends them except that Allah benefits him. As for you, you return with your sins forgiven; and as for others, they are kept safe in their families and their wealth.”

And from him: from ‘Ali b. Ibrahim, from his father, from al-Nawfali, from al-Sakuni, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), regarding the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: “and feed the destitute poor,” he said: “He is the incapacitated person who cannot get out of his disability.” [1]

And from him: from ‘Ali b. Ibrahim, from Ahmad b. Muhammad b. Khalid, from ‘Abdullah b. Yahya, from ‘Abdullah b. Muskan, from Abu Basir, who said: I said to Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), regarding the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: “Alms are only for the poor and the needy” [2]. He said: “The faqir is the one who does not ask people; the miskin is more distressed than him; and the ba’is is the most distressed of them. Everything which Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has made obligatory upon you—its public performance is better than its secrecy; and everything that is voluntary—its secrecy is better than its being public. And if a man were to carry the zakat of his wealth on his shoulder and distribute it [3], that would be good and beautiful.”
