Recitation, Remembrance, and Supplication on the Night and Day of ʿĀshūrāʾ

Recitation, Remembrance, and Supplication on the Night and Day of ʿĀshūrāʾ

[Chapter: Recitation, Dhikr, and Duʿāʾ]

That noble one, Imam Husain (a.s.), possessed immense eagerness for the recitation of the Book of Allah, both night and day. Thus, on the night of ʿĀshūrāʾ he requested a delay from the enemy in commencing the battle for the sake of it. [261]

On that night, because of his recitation, intimate supplication (munājāt), and worship, thirty men from the army of Ibn Saʿd were guided and hastened toward him, attaining the blessing of martyrdom. [262]

From the time he stood facing the enemy until the moment his blessed head was raised upon a spear, he remained continuously engaged in the recitation of the Qur’an. His head upon the spear recited Sūrat al-Kahf.

He persisted in the remembrance (dhikr) of Allah in all circumstances. Rather, all of his words, deeds, movements, and stillnesses, from the afternoon of Tāsūʿāʾ until the afternoon of ʿĀshūrāʾ, were entirely remembrance of Allah and a recalling of the Divine Covenant (mīthāq), until he fulfilled the trust.

He did not occupy himself with any of the ordinary requirements of human life, not even with eating food.

Yet his tongue remained constantly moist with the remembrance of Allah, even when his mouth had become dry from the intensity of thirst.

As for supplication (duʿāʾ), he was occupied with it from the beginning of the night until morning, and this was one of the reasons he requested a delay from the enemy on that night.

At the beginning of the morning he recited this supplication:

“O Allah, You are my trust in every distress, and my hope in every hardship. In every matter that befalls me, You are my reliance and my provision. How many afflictions have descended in which the heart grows weak, means become scarce, friends abandon one, and enemies rejoice in misfortune. I brought them before You and complained of them to You, and You relieved them.”

His final supplication was at the moment when he had fallen upon the ground:

“O Allah, Exalted in Station…”

and its complete text has been mentioned previously.
