Ibn Bābawayh said: Ahmad b. al-Hasan al-Qattān narrated to us, he said: Ahmad b. Yahyā b. Zakariyyā al-Qattān narrated to us, from Bakr b. ‘Abd Allāh b. Habīb, who said: Tamīm b. Buhlūl narrated to us, from his father, who said: Ismā‘īl b. al-Faḍl narrated to us, who said: I asked Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him) about the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: “And celebrate the praise of your Lord before the rising of the sun and before its setting.” (Taha 20:130; M. H. Shakir: “Therefore be patient as the apostles possessed of constancy did and be not in haste about them; as if on the day when they shall see what they are threatened with, they had not tarried but an hour of the day. This is a sufficient deliverance; shall then any be destroyed save the transgressing people? [Note: The specific phrase occurs within 20:130: ‘and celebrate the praise of your Lord before the rising of the sun and before its setting’].)
He said: “It is obligatory upon every Muslim to say before the rising of the sun ten times, and before its setting ten times: ‘There is no god but Allah, alone, He has no partner. His is the dominion and His is the praise. He gives life and causes death, and He is Living and does not die, and He has power over all things.’”
He (Ismā‘īl) said: So I said: ‘There is no god but Allah, alone, He has no partner. His is the dominion and His is the praise. He gives life and causes death, and He causes death and gives life’? He replied: “O man! There is no doubt that Allah gives life and causes death, and He causes death and gives life; but say it as I say it.”

‘Alī b. Ibrāhīm: In the narration of Abū al-Jārūd from Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him), regarding His saying: “Has it not become clear to them (a falam yahdi lahum),” he said: “Let it be made clear to them.” And His saying: “It would have been a sure doom (lakāna lizāman),” he said: “Lizam means destruction.” (References: Taha 20:128—M. H. Shakir: “Does it not then guide them that how many of the generations, in whose dwellings they go about, did We destroy before them? Most surely there are signs in this for those endowed with understanding.”; Taha 20:129—M. H. Shakir: “And had there not been a word already gone forth from your Lord, and an appointed term, it would surely have overtaken them.”)

M. H. Shakir:
“And enjoin your family to prayer and be constant therein. We do not ask you for subsistence; We provide for you, and the end is for guarding (against evil).” (20:132)
“And they say: Why does he not bring us a sign from his Lord? Has there not come to them a clear evidence of what is in the previous scriptures?” (20:133)
“And had We destroyed them with chastisement before this, they would certainly have said: O our Lord! why didst Thou not send to us a messenger so that we should have followed Thy communications before that we met disgrace and shame.” (20:134)
“Say: Every one is waiting, therefore wait: so you will come to know who is the follower of the even path and who goes aright.” (20:135)

Ibn Bābawayh said: ‘Alī b. al-Husayn b. Shādhawayh al-Mu’addib and Ja‘far b. Muhammad b. Masrūr (may Allah be pleased with them) said: Muhammad b. ‘Abd Allāh b. Ja‘far al-Ḥimyarī narrated to us, from his father, from al-Rayyan b. al-Ṣalt, who said: Al-Riḍā (peace be upon him) attended the session of al-Ma’mūn in Marw, and a group of scholars from Iraq and Khurāsān had gathered in his assembly—he continued the report until he said—Al-Ma’mūn said: “Has Allah favored the ‘itra over the rest of the people?” Abū al-Hasan (peace be upon him) said: “Indeed, Allah Most High has favored the ‘itra over all people in the decisive part of His Book.”
Al-Ma’mūn said to him: “And where is that in the Book of Allah?” Al-Riḍā (peace be upon him) said: “In His saying, Most High: ‘Surely Allah chose Adam and Nūḥ and the descendants of Ibrāhīm and the descendants of ‘Imrān above the nations—offspring, one of the other; and Allah is Hearing, Knowing.’ (Āl ‘Imrān 3:33–34; M. H. Shakir) And He, Mighty and Majestic, said elsewhere: ‘Or do they envy the people for what Allah has given them of His grace? But indeed We have given to the descendants of Ibrāhīm the Book and the wisdom, and We have given them a grand kingdom.’ (Al-Nisā’ 4:54; M. H. Shakir) Then He turned the address, after this, to the rest of the believers, and He said: ‘O you who believe! obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in authority from among you’ (Al-Nisā’ 4:59; M. H. Shakir), meaning those whom He made to inherit the Book and the wisdom and who were envied for it. Thus His saying, Most High: ‘Or do they envy the people for what Allah has given them of His grace? But indeed We have given to the descendants of Ibrāhīm the Book and the wisdom, and We have given them a grand kingdom’—that is, obedience to the purified, chosen ones; so ‘kingdom’ here is obedience to them.”
The scholars said: “Inform us: Did Allah Most High explain the ‘choosing’ (iṣṭifā’) in the Book?” Al-Riḍā (peace be upon him) said: “He explained the choosing outwardly as well as inwardly in twelve places and passages”—he continued mentioning the places until he said—“And as for the twelfth, it is His saying, Mighty and Majestic: ‘And enjoin your family to prayer and be constant therein’ (Taha 20:132). So Allah Most High has singled us out with this particular distinction—for He commanded us, along with the community, to establish the prayer, then He singled us out apart from the community. Thus the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) would come to the door of ‘Alī and Fāṭima (peace be upon them) after the revelation of this verse, for nine months, every day at the time of every prayer—five times—and he would say: ‘Prayer—may Allah have mercy on you.’ And Allah has not honored anyone from among the offspring of the prophets (peace be upon them) with a like honor with which He honored us and singled us out, apart from all their household.”
Al-Ma’mūn and the scholars said: “May Allah reward you—the People of the House of your Prophet—with good on behalf of this community, for we do not find explanation and clarification for what is obscure to us except with you.”

‘Alī b. Ibrāhīm: In the narration of Abū al-Jārūd from Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him), regarding His saying: “And enjoin your family to prayer and be constant therein” (Taha 20:132; M. H. Shakir).
He said: “Allah commanded him to single out his family apart from the people so that the people know that the Family of Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family) have with Allah a special rank not for the rest of the people—since He commanded them with the people in general, then He commanded them in particular. When this verse was revealed, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) would come every day at the time of the dawn prayer to the door of ‘Alī and Fāṭima (peace be upon them) and say: ‘Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.’ ‘Alī, Fāṭima, al-Ḥasan, and al-Ḥusayn (peace be upon them) would reply: ‘And upon you be peace, O Messenger of Allah, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.’ Then he would take hold of the two doorposts and say: ‘Prayer—may Allah have mercy on you: Indeed Allah only desires to remove uncleanliness from you, O People of the House, and to purify you thoroughly.’ (Al-Aḥzāb 33:33; M. H. Shakir) He continued to do that every day when he was present in Madīnah until he departed this world. Abū al-Ḥamrā’, the servant of the Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family), said: I testify that he used to do that.”

‘Alī b. Ibrāhīm also said: His saying, Most High: “And enjoin your family to prayer”—that is, your community—“and be constant therein. We do not ask you for subsistence; We provide for you, and the end is for guarding (against evil)” (Taha 20:132; M. H. Shakir). He said: “(It means) the Godwary (al-muttaqīn), with the verb put in place of the object.”
He said: And as for His saying: “Say: Every one is waiting, therefore wait: so you will come to know who is the follower of the even path and who goes aright.” (Taha 20:135; M. H. Shakir) that is, “Await a matter.”

Sa‘d b. ‘Abd Allāh: From al-Mu‘allā b. Muhammad al-Baṣrī, who said: Abū al-Faḍl al-Madanī narrated to us, from Abū Maryam al-Anṣārī, from al-Minhal b. ‘Amr, from Zirr b. Ḥubaysh, from the Commander of the Faithful (blessings of Allah be upon him), who said—I heard him say: “When a man enters his grave, two angels come to him, their names are Munkar and Nakīr. The first thing they ask him about is his Lord, then about his Prophet, then about his Guardian (walī). If he answers, he is saved; and if he is bewildered, they punish him.”
A man said: “What is the case of one who knows his Lord and his Prophet, but does not know his Guardian?” He said: “He is wavering, neither to these nor to those—‘and whomsoever Allah leaves in error, you shall never find for him a way.’ (Al-Nisā’ 4:88, 4:143; M. H. Shakir) That one has no way.”
And it was said to the Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family): “Who is our Guardian, O Prophet of Allah?” He said: “Your Guardian in this time is ‘Alī (peace be upon him), and after him, his executor (waṣī). And for every time there is a learned one by whom Allah establishes the proof, lest it be as the misguided said before them when their prophets departed from them: ‘Our Lord! why didst Thou not send to us a messenger so that we should have followed Thy communications before that we met disgrace and shame’ (Taha 20:134; M. H. Shakir), on account of what was of their misguidance, which was their ignorance of the signs—and they are the executors (awṣiyā’). So Allah, Mighty and Majestic, answered them: ‘Say: Every one is waiting, therefore wait: so you will come to know who is the follower of the even path and who goes aright.’ (Taha 20:135; M. H. Shakir)
Their waiting was only that they said: ‘We are in latitude regarding knowing the executors until we recognize an Imam.’ So Allah reproached them for that. The executors are the companions of the path—standing upon it. None enters Paradise except one who recognizes them and whom they recognize; and none enters the Fire except one who denies them and whom they deny—because they are the recognized ones of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: He made them known to His servants when taking the covenants upon them, and He described them in His Book, and He, Mighty and Majestic, said: ‘And on the most elevated places there shall be men who know all by their marks’ (Al-A‘rāf 7:46; M. H. Shakir), and they are the witnesses over their friends, while the Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family) is the witness over them. He took for them the covenants of the servants upon obedience, and the Prophet took from them the covenant upon obedience, so his prophethood ran over them, and that is the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: ‘How will it be, then, when We bring from every people a witness and bring you as a witness over these?’ ‘On that day those who disbelieved and disobeyed the Messenger will desire that the earth were levelled with them, and they shall not hide any word from Allah.’ (Al-Nisā’ 4:41–42; M. H. Shakir)”

Ibn Shahr Āshūb: From al-A‘mash, from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from Ibn ‘Abbās, regarding His saying, Most High: “Then you will come to know who is the follower of the even path”—by Allah, it is Muhammad and his Household (peace be upon them)—“and who goes aright”—they are the companions of Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family). (Taha 20:135; M. H. Shakir)

In (Miṣbāḥ al-Sharī‘ah): Al-Ṣādiq (peace be upon him) said: “The one who longs (for Allah) does not crave food, nor relish drink, nor find sleep pleasant, nor find intimacy with any companion, nor seek a dwelling, nor settle in civilization, nor wear (fine) clothes, nor remain at rest. He worships Allah night and day, hoping thereby to reach that for which he longs; he converses with Him in the language of yearning, expressing what is in his innermost being—just as Allah Most High informed about Mūsā (peace be upon him) at the tryst with his Lord: ‘And I hastened to Thee, my Lord, that Thou mightest be pleased.’” (Taha 20:84; M. H. Shakir)
