Al-Hajj Ayah 46

English:

His inward state is in truth empty of it; loneliness born of the love of praise has overwhelmed it, and the darkness of greed has covered it. How ensnared he is by his own desires, and how he misleads people by his words! Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has said: Evil is the guardian and evil is the associate. [Quran 22:13; M. H. Shakir: He calls upon that which harms him more than it benefits him; certainly an evil guardian and certainly an evil associate.]

As for the one whom Allah safeguards with the light of support and the beauty of success, and purifies his heart from defilement, he never parts from knowledge and piety. He listens to speech for its source and leaves aside its speaker, whoever he may be. The sages said: Take wisdom even from the mouths of madmen. Jesus (peace be upon him) said: Sit with those whose very sight and meeting remind you of Allah, even before they speak; and do not sit with those whose outward matches yours while their inward opposes it. For such a one claims what he does not possess—if you are truthful in seeking benefit. When you meet someone in whom there are three qualities, then seize the chance to see him, meet him, and sit with him, even for an hour, for his blessings will leave an effect upon your religion, your heart, and your worship: one whose words do not surpass his deeds, whose deeds do not surpass his truthfulness, and whose truthfulness does not contend with his Lord. Sit with him reverently; await mercy and blessing; beware lest the proof be established against you; guard his time so that you do not blame him and thus lose; and look upon him as one favored by Allah, specially chosen and honored by Him.

English (Quran 22:46, M. H. Shakir):

Have they not travelled in the land so that they should have hearts with which to understand, or ears with which to hear? For surely it is not the eyes that are blind, but blind are the hearts which are in the breasts.

English:

1- Al-Tabrisi, in Majma‘ al-Bayan: Regarding His saying, Have they not travelled in the land, that is: Have not your people, O Muhammad, travelled in the lands of Yemen and al-Sham? Reported from Ibn ‘Abbas.

English:

99-/_2- Al-Suyuti in al-Durr al-Manthur, transmitting it up to ‘Abd Allah b. Jarad, said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his Family) said: The blind one is not he whose eyesight is blind, but the blind one is he whose insight is blind.
