Al-Isra Ayah 29

Translation (M. H. Shakir, Qur’an 17:29): And do not make your hand to be shackled to your neck, nor stretch it forth to the utmost (limit) of its stretching, lest you should (afterwards) sit down blamed, stripped off.

Do not squander the wilayah of Ali (peace be upon him).

Translation: /6334 _19- Ali ibn Ibrahim said: His words, “And give to the near of kin his due, and (to) the needy and the wayfarer,” refers to the relatives of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family). It was revealed about Fatimah (peace be upon her), so Fadak was made for her. “The needy” are from the descendants of Fatimah (peace be upon her), and “the wayfarer” is from the family of Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family), and the descendants of Fatimah (peace be upon her). And His words, “And do not squander wastefully,” that is, do not spend wealth in other than the obedience of Allah. “Surely the squanderers are brethren of the devils.” The address is to the Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family) while the meaning concerns the people. Then He conjoined the address with respect to the parents, saying: “And if you must turn away from them,” meaning from the parents when you have dependents, or you are ill or poor, then say to them a gentle saying—that is, good—if you are unable to be dutiful to them and serve them, and hope for them Allah’s mercy.

Translation (M. H. Shakir, Qur’an 17:29): And do not make your hand to be shackled to your neck, nor stretch it forth to the utmost (limit) of its stretching, lest you should (afterwards) sit down blamed, stripped off.

Translation: 99-/6335 _1- Ali ibn Ibrahim said: The reason it was revealed is that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) would not turn away anyone who asked him for something he had. A man came to him and asked him, but nothing was present, so he said, “It will be, God willing.” The man said, “O Messenger of Allah, give me your shirt.” He (peace be upon him) would not turn anyone away from what he had [1], so he gave him his shirt. Then Allah revealed: “And do not make your hand to be shackled to your neck, nor stretch it forth to the utmost of its stretching …,” thus forbidding him to be stingy or to be excessive so that he would sit stripped of clothing. He said: Al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: “Al-mahsur means: the naked.”

Translation: 99-/6336 _2- Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub, from Ali ibn Muhammad, from Ahmad ibn Abi ‘Abdillah, from his father, from al-Nadr ibn Suwayd, from Musa ibn Bakr, from ‘Ajlan, said: I was with Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) when a beggar came. He went to a basket that had dates, filled his hand, and gave them to him. Then another came and asked; he arose, took him by the hand, and gave him. Then another came and asked; he arose, took him by the hand, and gave him. Then another came [and asked; he arose, took him by the hand, and gave him. Then another came], so he said, “Allah is the Provider for us and you.” Then he said: “The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) would not be asked by anyone for anything of this world but that he gave it.”

A woman sent her son to him and said, “Go to him and ask him; if he says to you, ‘We have nothing,’ then say, ‘Give me your shirt.’” He said: So he took his shirt and threw it to him. Translation: 99-/6338 _4- And from him: from Ali ibn Ibrahim, from Harun ibn Muslim, from Mas‘adah ibn Sadaqah, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: “Then Allah, Mighty and Majestic, taught His Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family) how to spend. He had an ounce of gold, and he disliked that it should remain overnight with him, so he gave it in charity. In the morning he had nothing, and someone came asking him, but he had nothing to give him. The asker reproached him, and he was grieved because he had nothing to give; and he was compassionate and tender. So Allah, Mighty and Majestic, trained His Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family) by His command, saying: ‘And do not make your hand to be shackled to your neck, nor stretch it forth to the utmost of its stretching, lest you should (afterwards) sit down blamed, stripped off,’ meaning: people may ask you and not excuse you; so if you give away all the wealth you have, you will have been depleted of wealth.”

Translation: 99-/6342 _8- Ibn Shahr Ashub: It is reported that he (peace be upon him) gave away all his wealth, even his shirt, and remained in his home naked upon his mat.

Translation (M. H. Shakir, Qur’an 17:31-32): And do not kill your children for fear of poverty; We give them sustenance and yourselves (too); surely to kill them is a great wrong. And do not approach fornication; surely it is an indecency and an evil way.

Translation: /6343 _1- Ali ibn Ibrahim said about His words, “And do not kill your children for fear of poverty”—it means fear of poverty and hunger, for the Arabs used to kill their children for that. So Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: “We provide for them and for you. Surely the killing of them is a great wrong.”

Translation: 99-/6344 _2- Al-‘Ayyashi: From Ishaq ibn ‘Ammar, from Abu Ibrahim (peace be upon him), who said: “A pilgrim never becomes destitute.” I said, “What is imlaq?” He said, “Bankruptcy (poverty).” Then he said: “The saying of Allah: ‘And do not kill your children for fear of poverty.’”

Translation: 99-/6345 _3- And from Ishaq ibn ‘Ammar, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: “The pilgrim never becomes destitute.” I said, “What is imlaq?” He said, “Bankruptcy (poverty).” Then he said: “‘And do not kill your children for fear of poverty; We provide for them and for you.’”

Translation: /6346 _4- Ali ibn Ibrahim said about His words, “And do not approach fornication; surely it is an indecency and an evil way”—it is decisive (muhkam).

Translation: 99-/6347 _5- Then he said: In the narration of Abu al-Jarud, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), regarding His words, “And do not approach fornication; surely it is an indecency,” he said: “A sin and an object of loathing, for Allah loathes it and detests it. And His words, ‘and an evil way’: he is among the most severely punished of people; and fornication is among the gravest of major sins.”
