99-/7074 (al-Kafi 4:6/269; al-Tahdhib 5:51/18 variant): Abu Basir reports he heard Abu Abdillah (peace be upon him) say: Whoever dies while being healthy and affluent and has not performed Hajj is among those about whom Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has said: “And We will gather him on the Day of Resurrection blind.” I said, Glory be to Allah, blind? He said: Yes. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has blinded him from the path of truth. And Shaykh (al-Tusi) narrated it in al-Tahdhib with his chain from Muhammad b. Ya‘qub [1], and he transmitted the report with the same chain and text except that at the end it says: “Allah has blinded him from the path to Paradise.” [2] (Quran 20:124; M. H. Shakir: And whoever turns away from My reminder, his shall be a straitened life, and We will raise him on the day of resurrection, blind.)
99-/7075 (al-Tahdhib 5:53/18): Mu‘awiya b. ‘Ammar said: I asked Abu Abdillah (peace be upon him) about a man who possesses wealth and has never performed Hajj. He said: He is among those about whom Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has said: “And We will gather him on the Day of Resurrection blind.” I said, Glory be to Allah, blind? He said: Allah has blinded him from the path of truth. (Quran 20:124; Shakir translation as above.)
99-/7076 (Tafsir al-Qummi 2:66): I asked him about a man who has never performed Hajj and has wealth. He said: By Allah, he is among those about whom Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has said: “And We will gather him on the Day of Resurrection blind.” I said, Glory be to Allah, blind? He said: Allah has blinded him from the path to Paradise. (Quran 20:124; Shakir translation as above.)

(Quran 20:128-131; M. H. Shakir: What! is it not clear to them how many of the generations We destroyed before them, amidst whose dwellings they go about? Most surely there are signs in this for those endowed with understanding. And had there not been a word that had already gone forth from your Lord and an appointed term, it would surely have overtaken them. Therefore be patient with what they say, and sing the praise of your Lord before the rising of the sun and before the setting. And glorify Him in the night and after the prayers. And do not stretch your eyes after that with which We have provided different classes of them, of the splendor of this world’s life, that We may thereby try them; and the sustenance of your Lord is better and more abiding.)

99-/7078 (Ta’wil al-Ayat 1:19/320): Abu al-Hasan Musa b. Ja‘far (peace be upon them) said [1]: Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: “What! is it not clear to them how many of the generations We destroyed before them, amidst whose dwellings they go about? Most surely there are signs in this for those endowed with understanding”—and they are the Imams from the Family of Muhammad (peace be upon them)—“and whatever is like it in the Quran.” And Allah, Mighty and Majestic, says: “And had there not been a word that had already gone forth from your Lord and an appointed term… so be patient, O Muhammad—yourself and your progeny—over what they say, and celebrate the praise of your Lord before the rising of the sun and before its setting.” The meaning of his words “and whatever is like it in the Quran” is like “Most surely there are signs in this for those endowed with understanding”; and every mention in the Quran of “those endowed with understanding (ulū al-nuhā)” refers to the Imams (peace be upon them). (Quran 20:128-130; Shakir translation provided above.)
99-/7079 (Tafsir al-Qummi 2:66): Regarding His saying “Most surely there are signs in this for those endowed with understanding,” he said: We are those endowed with understanding. Regarding His saying “And had there not been a word that had already gone forth from your Lord, it would surely have overtaken them,” he said: Punishment would have descended upon them, but He has deferred them to an appointed term. Regarding “And glorify Him in the night and at the ends of the day,” he said: Morning and evening. And about “And do not stretch your eyes toward what We have provided to classes of them, the adornment of the life of this world… and the sustenance of your Lord is better and more lasting,” Abu Abdillah (peace be upon him) said: When this verse was revealed, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) sat upright and then said: Whoever does not console himself with Allah’s consolation, his soul will be torn with regrets over the world; whoever follows with his eyes what is in people’s hands, his worry will be prolonged and his rage unassuaged; and whoever recognizes for himself no blessing from Allah except in food or drink, his term will be shortened and his punishment will draw near. (Quran 20:128-131; Shakir translation provided above.)
99-/7080 (al-Kafi 3:11/444): I said regarding “In the hours of the night, prostrating and standing, fearing the hereafter and hoping for the mercy of his Lord” [2]; he said: It means the night prayer. I said: “And at the two ends of the day, that you may be pleased?” He said: It means voluntary prayers during the day. I said: “And at the setting of the stars?” [3] He said: Two rak‘as before dawn. I said: “And after the prostrations?” [4] He said: Two rak‘as after Maghrib. (Quran 39:9; Shakir: Is he who is obedient during hours of the night, prostrating himself and standing, takes heed of the hereafter and hopes for the mercy of his Lord…? Quran 52:49; Shakir: And glorify Him in some parts of the night and at the setting of the stars. Quran 50:40; Shakir: And glorify Him in the night and after the prayers.)

99-/7081 (al-Khisal:58/452): I asked Abu Abdillah (peace be upon him) about Allah’s saying: “And celebrate the praise of your Lord before the rising of the sun and before its setting.” He said: It is an obligation upon every Muslim to say before sunrise ten times and before sunset ten times: “There is no god but Allah, alone, without partner. His is the dominion and His is the praise. He gives life and causes death, and He is Living and does not die, and He has power over all things.” I said: “There is no god but Allah, alone, without partner. His is the dominion and His is the praise. He gives life and causes death, and He causes death and gives life?” He said: O man, there is no doubt that Allah gives life and causes death, and causes death and gives life; but say it as I say. (Quran 20:130; Shakir: Therefore be patient with what they say, and sing the praise of your Lord before the rising of the sun and before the setting.)

99-/7082 (Tafsir al-Qummi 2:67): In Abu al-Jarud’s report from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), regarding “Has it not guided them,” he said: He clarifies to them. And regarding “it would surely have overtaken them (lizāman),” he said: Lizām means destruction.

(Quran 20:132-135; M. H. Shakir: And enjoin your family to prayer and be constant therein. We do not ask you for sustenance; We give you sustenance, and the (good) end is for guarding (against evil). And they say: Why does he not bring us a sign from his Lord? Has not there come to them a clear evidence of what is in the previous books? And had We destroyed them with chastisement before this, they would certainly have said: O our Lord! why didst Thou not send to us a messenger so that we should have followed Thy communications before that we met disgrace and shame. Say: Every one is awaiting, therefore do await: so you will come to know who is the follower of the even path and who goes aright.)

Abu al-Hasan (peace be upon him) said: Indeed, Allah Most High has preferred the ‘itrah over the rest of the people in the decisive text of His Book. Al-Ma’mun said to him: Where is that in the Book of Allah? Al-Rida (peace be upon him) said: In His saying: “Surely Allah chose Adam and Nuh and the descendants of Ibrahim and the descendants of Imran above the nations—offspring, one of the other; and Allah is Hearing, Knowing” [1]; and He, Mighty and Majestic, said in another place: “Or do they envy the people for what Allah has given them of His grace? But indeed We gave to the descendants of Ibrahim the Book and the Wisdom, and We gave them a great kingdom” [2]. Then He turned the address after this to the rest of the believers, and said: (Quran 3:33-34; Shakir: Surely Allah chose Adam and Nuh and the descendants of Ibrahim and the descendants of Imran above the nations. Offspring one of the other; and Allah is Hearing, Knowing. Quran 4:54; Shakir: Or do they envy the people for what Allah has given them out of His grace?
