Ibrahim Ayah 16-17

Abraham, verses 16-17

He then said to him: O son of Amr, either repent or depart. He replied: O Muhammad, rather allot to the rest of Quraysh something of what is in your hand, for the Banu Hashim have taken away the honor of the Arabs and non-Arabs. The Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) said to him: That is not up to me; that is up to Allah, Blessed and Exalted. He said: O Muhammad, my heart does not follow me to repentance, but I will depart from you. So he called for his mount and rode it; when he reached the rear of Medina, a stone struck him and crushed his skull. Then revelation came to the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family), saying: “A questioner questioned about a punishment which must befall, for the unbelievers—[for] the disbelievers in the guardianship of Ali—there is none to avert it, from Allah, the Lord of the ways of Ascent.” I said: May I be your ransom, we do not recite it like this. He said: Thus did Allah reveal it by Gabriel to Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family), and thus, by Allah, it is recorded in the Mushaf of Fatimah (peace be upon her). Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) said to those hypocrites around him: Go to your companion, for what he sought to hasten has come upon him. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: “And they sought judgment, but every haughty adversary was disappointed.”

Quran references and translation (M. H. Shakir):

- Al-Ma‘arij 70:1-3: A questioner asked about a punishment which must befall. The unbelievers—there is none to avert it—from Allah, the Lord of the ways of Ascent.

- Ibrahim 14:15: And they sought judgment and every insolent opposer was disappointed.

99-/5697 _2- Ali ibn Ibrahim: His saying, the Exalted: “And they sought judgment” means they called out [for judgment]; “and every insolent opposer was disappointed” means he lost.

99-/5698 _3- Then he said: And in the narration of Abu al-Jarud, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), he said: “The ‘anid (opposer) is the one who turns away from the truth.”

His saying, the Exalted:

“Before him is Hell, and he shall be given to drink of festering water; he will drink it and not be able to swallow it, and death will come to him from every quarter, but he shall not die; and before him is a harsh chastisement.” (Ibrahim 14:16-17, M. H. Shakir)

99-/5699 _4- Ali ibn Ibrahim said, regarding His saying, the Exalted: “Before him is Hell, and he shall be given to drink of festering water”: It is water that issues from the private parts of fornicating women.

99-/5700 _5- Al-Tabrisi: From Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him): “That is, he will be given to drink from what flows of blood and pus from the private parts of fornicating women in the Fire.”

99-/5701 _6- Ali ibn Ibrahim said regarding His saying: “He will drink it and not be able to swallow it, and death will come to him from every quarter, but he shall not die”: It is brought near to him and he loathes it; when it comes near his face, it roasts his face and the skin of his head falls off; and when he drinks, his intestines are cut to pieces.

And they are torn under his feet, and indeed from one of them there pours forth like a valley pus and gore. Then he said: They weep until their tears flow over their faces in streams; then the tears cease and blood flows, so that were ships set running therein they would sail. And it is His saying: “And they shall be made to drink boiling water so it shall rend their bowels.” (Muhammad 47:15, M. H. Shakir)

99-/5702 _4- Al-‘Ayyashi: From Mas‘adah b. Sadaqah, from Ja‘far b. Muhammad, from his father, from his grandfather (peace be upon them), who said: “The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) said: When the zaqqum and the dari‘ boil in the bellies of the people of the Fire like boiling scalding water, they ask for a drink, so they are brought a drink of ghassaq and pus—he will gulp it down and hardly be able to swallow it, and death will come to him from every quarter, but he will not die—and before him is a harsh chastisement, and boiling water by which Hell has been boiling since it was created, like molten brass that scorches faces—evil is the drink and evil is the resting-place.”

His saying, the Exalted:

“The parable of those who disbelieve in their Lord: their works are as ashes on which the wind blows hard on a stormy day; they shall not have power over anything out of what they have earned; this is the great error.” (Ibrahim 14:18, M. H. Shakir)

99-/5703 _1- Ali ibn Ibrahim said regarding His saying: “The parable of those who disbelieve in their Lord: their works are as ashes…”: Whoever does not acknowledge the wilayah of the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him), his deeds are nullified, like ashes which the wind comes and carries off.

99-/5704 _2- Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub: From Muhammad b. Yahya, from Muhammad b. al-Husayn, from Safwan b. Yahya, from al-‘Ala’ b. Razin, from Muhammad b. Muslim, who said: I heard Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) say: “Everyone who worships Allah with a devotion in which he exerts himself, but has no Imam from Allah, his striving is not accepted, and he is astray and bewildered, and Allah detests his deeds. His likeness is that of a sheep which strays from its shepherd and its flock. It plunges about going to and fro during its day; when night falls upon it, it catches sight of a flock not its own with its shepherd, so it yearns toward it and is deceived by it, thus it spends the night with them in their enclosure. But when the shepherd drives his flock, it fails to recognize its shepherd and its flock; it is lost, bewildered, seeking its shepherd and its flock. Then it sights sheep with their shepherd, so it yearns toward them and is deceived by them. The shepherd cries out to it: ‘Join your shepherd and your flock, for you…’”
