99-/5939 _12-
From Sama‘ah, who said: Abu’l-Hasan (peace be upon him) said, regarding “And certainly We have given you seven of the oft-repeated and the grand Quran”: “None of the prophets was given (this) except Muhammad, and they are the seven Imams upon whom the sphere revolves, and the Grand Quran is Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family).”
Do not strain your eyes after what We have given certain classes of them to enjoy, and do not grieve over them, and make yourself gentle to the believers. (Qur’an 15:88, M. H. Shakir)

‘Ali b. Ibrahim said: Ahmad b. Idris informed us, who said: Ahmad b. Muhammad narrated to us, from Muhammad b. Sinan, from al-Mufaddal b. ‘Umar, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) who said: “When this verse was revealed: Do not strain your eyes after what We have given certain classes of them to enjoy, and do not grieve over them, and make yourself gentle to the believers, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) said: Whoever does not take comfort in the consolation of Allah, his soul will be torn with regrets over the world; and whoever casts his gaze at what is in the hands of others, his worry will increase and his rage will not be soothed; and whoever does not recognize that Allah has bestowed upon him a blessing—not in food, nor in drink, nor in clothing [1]—then his deed is curtailed and his punishment draws near; and whoever wakes up grieved over the world wakes up angry with Allah; and whoever complains of a misfortune that has befallen him is only complaining about his Lord; and whoever from this community who has recited the Qur’an enters the Fire is among those who take the signs of Allah in mockery; and whoever approaches a man of means and shows him humbleness seeking what is in his hands, two-thirds of his religion are gone. Then he said: Do not be hasty; for it is not that a man receives [2] gentleness from another man so he honors and respects him—this may indeed be due to what is incumbent for him upon him—but you see that he intends by his show of humility what is with Allah, while he wants to divert him [3] from what is in his hands.”

Al-‘Ayyashi: from Hammad, from some of his companions, from one of the two (peace be upon them), regarding Allah’s saying, Do not strain your eyes after what We have given certain classes of them to enjoy. He said: “A straitened time befell the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family), so he borrowed from a Jew. The Jew said, ‘By Allah, Muhammad has neither a bleating ewe nor a bellowing she-camel [1], so why should I advance him a loan?’ The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) said, ‘I am indeed the trustee of Allah in His heaven and His earth; were He to entrust me with something, I would deliver it back to him.’ He then sent his shield [2] and pledged it with him, whereupon there was revealed to him: And do not strain your eyes after what We have given certain classes of them to enjoy—the splendor of the life of this world [3].”
And do not strain your eyes after what We have given certain classes of them to enjoy—the splendor of the life of this world—that We may try them by it; and the sustenance of your Lord is better and more abiding. (Qur’an 20:131, M. H. Shakir)

Sa‘id in the Book (al-Zuhd): from al-Nadr, from Durust, from Ishaq b. ‘Ammar, from Maysir, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), who said: “When this verse was revealed: And do not strain your eyes after what We have given certain classes of them to enjoy—the splendor of the life of this world [4]—the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) sat upright and then said: Whoever does not take comfort in the consolation of Allah, his soul will be cut with regrets over the world; and whoever follows with his eyes what is in people’s hands, his worry will be prolonged and his rage will not be soothed; and whoever does not recognize a blessing of Allah upon him except in food or drink, his deed is curtailed and his punishment draws near.”
And do not strain your eyes after what We have given certain classes of them to enjoy—the splendor of the life of this world—that We may try them by it; and the sustenance of your Lord is better and more abiding. (Qur’an 20:131, M. H. Shakir)
