[Quran 2:268] Shakir: The Shaitan threatens you with poverty and enjoins you to be niggardly, and Allah promises you forgiveness from Himself and abundance; and Allah is Ample-giving, Knowing.
99-/1486 _1- Ibn Bābawayh: He said, My father (may Allah be pleased with him) told me, he said: Muhammad ibn Yahyā al-‘Attār told us, he said: Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Yahyā told us, he said: al-Hasan ibn ‘Alī, from ‘Abbās, from Asbāt [1], from Abū ‘Abd al-Rahmān, who said: I said to Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him), “Sometimes I feel sadness without finding its cause in my family, wealth, or child; and sometimes I feel joy without finding its cause in my family, wealth, or child.”
He said: “There is no one except that an angel and a devil are with him. When his joy occurs, it is due to the angel drawing near to him; and when his sadness occurs, it is due to the devil drawing near to him. That is the saying of Allah, Blessed and Exalted: The Shaitan threatens you with poverty and enjoins you to be niggardly, and Allah promises you forgiveness from Himself and abundance; and Allah is Ample-giving, Knowing.”
99-/1487 _2- ‘Alī ibn Ibrāhīm said: Indeed, Satan says, “Do not spend, for you will become poor” [2]; and Allah promises you forgiveness from Himself—meaning, He will forgive you if you spend for Allah’s sake—and abundance, meaning: He will replace it for you.
99-/1488 _3- Al-‘Ayyāshī: From Hārūn ibn Khārijah, from Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him). He said: I said to him, “I feel joy without perceiving any cause for joy in myself, nor in my wealth, nor in my friend; and I feel sadness without perceiving any cause for sadness in myself, nor in my wealth, nor in my friend.”
He said: “Yes. Indeed, Satan brushes against the heart and says: ‘If that had been good with Allah, He would not have given your enemy the upper hand over you [3], nor would He have made you in need of him. Are you awaiting anything except what those before you awaited? And did they say anything?’ That is the one who is saddened without a [discernible] cause for sadness.
“As for the joy: the angel brushes against the heart and says: ‘If Allah has given your enemy the upper hand over you, and has placed you in need of him, it is but a few days. Rejoice in forgiveness from Allah and abundance.’ And that is the saying of Allah: The Shaitan threatens you with poverty and enjoins you to be niggardly, and Allah promises you forgiveness from Himself and abundance.”
