Reference: Aal Imran 3:84

Translation (M. H. Shakir): Say: We believe in Allah and in what has been revealed to us, and what was revealed to Ibrahim and Ismail and Ishaq and Yaqoub and the tribes, and what was given to Musa and Isa and the prophets from their Lord; we do not make any distinction between any of them, and to Him do we submit.

99-/1784

99-/1784 - al-‘Ayyāshī: From Ḥanān b. Sadīr, from his father, who said: I said to Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him): Were the children of Ya‘qub prophets? He said: No. Rather, they were the tribes, the sons of the prophets. They did not depart the world except as felicitous ones; they repented and reflected upon what they had done.

99-/1785 - ‘Alī b. Ibrāhīm: His statement “And whoever desires a religion other than Islam, it shall not be accepted from him” (Aal Imran 3:85) is decisive. Then Allah, Mighty and Glorious, mentioned “those who break the covenant of Allah” [1] regarding the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him), and that they disbelieved after the Messenger. He said: “How shall Allah guide a people who disbelieved after their believing, and they had borne witness that the Messenger is true, and clear arguments had come to them; and Allah does not guide the unjust people. Those, their reward is that upon them is the curse of Allah and the angels and men altogether; abiding in it; the chastisement shall not be lightened from them, nor shall they be respited; except those who repent after that and amend, then surely Allah is Forgiving, Merciful. Surely those who disbelieve after their believing, then increase in unbelief, their repentance shall not be accepted, and these are they that go astray. Surely those who disbelieve and die while they are unbelievers, the (whole) earth full of gold shall not be accepted from one of them, though he should offer it as a ransom; these it is that shall have a painful chastisement, and they shall have no helpers” (Aal Imran 3:86-91, Shakir). All of this concerns the enemies of the Family of Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family).

99-/1786

99-/1786 - Al-Ṭabrisī in Majma‘ al-Bayān, on His saying “How shall Allah guide a people who disbelieved after their believing … except those who repent”: It is said these verses were revealed about a man of the Anṣār called al-Ḥārith b. Suwayd b. al-Ṣāmit, who treacherously killed al-Mujadhdhar b. Ziyād al-Balawī and fled, apostatized from Islam, and went to Mecca. Then he regretted it and sent to his people to ask the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family): Is there repentance for me? They asked, and the verses were revealed up to “except those who repent.” A man of his people carried it to him, and he said: I know that you are truthful, and that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) is more truthful than you, and that Allah, Exalted, is the most truthful of the three. He returned to Medina, repented, and his Islam became good. Al-Ṭabrisī said: And this is narrated from Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him).

99-/1787 - Muḥammad b. Ya‘qūb: From ‘Alī b. Ibrāhīm, from his father, from ‘Umar b. ‘Abd al-‘Azīz, from Yūnus b. Ẓabyan, from Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him): “You shall not attain righteousness until you spend what you love—read it thus.”

99-/1788

99-/1788 - From him, from Muḥammad b. Yaḥyā, from Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. ‘Īsā; and ‘Alī b. Ibrāhīm, from his father, together, from al-Ḥasan b. Maḥbūb, from Abū Wallād al-Ḥannāṭ, who said: I asked Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him) about the word of Allah, Mighty and Glorious: “And do good to parents” [1]. What is this beneficence? He said: Beneficence is that you do well in accompanying them, and that you do not put them in a position to have to ask you for anything [of what they need], even if they are wealthy. Does not Allah, Mighty and Glorious, say: “By no means shall you attain to righteousness until you spend out of what you love” (Aal Imran 3:92, Shakir). [1] al-Baqara 2:83; al-Nisā’ 4:36; al-An‘ām 6:151; al-Isrā’ 17:23. Translation (Shakir for 2:83): And when We made a covenant with the children of Israel: You shall not serve any but Allah and (you shall do) good to (your) parents and to the near of kin and to the orphans and the needy, and you shall speak to men good (words) and keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate. Then you turned back except a few of you and (now too) you turn aside.

99-/1789 - al-‘Ayyāshī: From Yūnus b. Ẓabyan, from Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him), who said: “You shall not attain righteousness until you spend what you love”—thus he recited it.

99-/1790

99-/1790 - From al-Mufaḍḍal b. ‘Umar, who said: I entered upon Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him) one day with something and placed it before him. He said: What is this? I said: This is a gift for your clients and servants. He said to me: O Mufaḍḍal, I do not accept that, nor do I accept anything out of a need I have for it; I only accept it so that they may be purified through it. Then he said: I heard my father say: Whoever lets a year pass without connecting us from his wealth, whether little or much, Allah will not look at him on the Day of Resurrection, unless Allah pardons him. Then he said: O Mufaḍḍal, it is an obligation that Allah has imposed upon our Shī‘a in His Book when He says: “By no means shall you attain to righteousness until you spend out of what you love” (Aal Imran 3:92, Shakir). We are righteousness and piety, the path of guidance, and the gate of piety; our supplication is not veiled from Allah. Limit yourselves to your lawful and unlawful, and ask about that; and beware of asking any of the jurists about what does not concern you and about what Allah has veiled from you.

99-/1791

99-/1791 - Muḥammad b. Ya‘qūb: From a number of our companions, from Aḥmad b. Abī ‘Abd Allāh, from Muḥammad b. Shu‘ayb, from al-Ḥusayn b. al-Ḥasan, from ‘Āṣim, from Yūnus, from one who mentioned it, from Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him) that he used to give charity with sugar. It was said to him: Do you give charity with sugar? He said: Yes. There is nothing more beloved to me than it; I love to give charity with what is most beloved to me.

99-/1792

99-/1792 - ‘Alī b. Ibrāhīm: That is, you will not attain the reward until you return to the Family of Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family) their right from the khums, the anfal, and the fay’.

99-/1793

99-/1793 - Abū ‘Alī al-Ṭabrisī: It is narrated from Ibn ‘Umar that the Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family) was asked about this verse. He said: It is that the servant spends wealth while he is tight-fisted, hoping for the world, desiring wealth, and fearing poverty.

Reference: Aal Imran 3:93

Translation (M. H. Shakir): All food was lawful to the children of Israel, except what Israel had forbidden himself, before the Taurat was revealed. Say: Bring the Taurat and read it, if you are truthful.

99-/1794

99-/1794 - ‘Alī b. Ibrāhīm said: Ya‘qūb used to be afflicted with sciatica, so he forbade camel meat to himself. The Jews said: Camel meat is forbidden in the Torah. So Allah, Mighty and Glorious, said to them: “Say: Bring the Taurat and read it, if you are truthful” (Aal Imran 3:93, Shakir). Indeed, Israel only forbade this to himself; he did not forbid it to the people. This is a report about the Jews and its wording is the wording of narration.

When the Torah was revealed, it did not forbid it, and he did not eat it.

99-/1797 - From ‘Umar b. Yazīd, who said: I wrote to Abū al-Ḥasan (peace be upon him) asking him about a man who manumitted his slave as tadbīr—does he have the right to sell his neck? He wrote back: “All food was lawful to the children of Israel except what Israel forbade himself” (Aal Imran 3:93, Shakir).
