Concerning the Outward and Inward Purification of Imam Husain (a.s.) on the Night of Ashura

As for the outward purification, Imam Husain (a.s.) performed ghusl on the night of Ashura with the water that his son Ali al-Akbar (a.s.) brought for him, even though he knew that he would later be in desperate need of that water. This was among the unique characteristics of that noble Imam.

[ صفحه 113]

As for the inward purification (tahaarah baateniyyah), he performed wuḍūʾ with the blood that flowed from his blessed heart.

Then he performed a sequential ghusl (ghusl tartibi) with the blood that flowed from his head and limbs.

Finally, he performed an immersion ghusl (ghusl irtemaasi) in the blood of his blessed throat.

And he performed tayammum with the hot soil of Karbala, wiping his face with it when he placed his blessed forehead upon the earth, at the moment when he surrendered to Allah that which he had pledged and sold to Him.

Thus, for that noble Imam (a.s.), all forms of purification were gathered together: outward and inward purification, including wuḍūʾ, ghusl, and tayammum.
