69. The reward of visiting Imam Husain (a.s.) on foot
The respected Hujjat al-Islam wal-Muslimin, Agha Sayyid Kazim Shahroudi, narrated a story about his great-grandfather, the esteemed Shi‘a Marja‘, the late Ayatullah Sayyid Mahmood Shahroudi (may his soul be sanctified). Then he found a text written 15 years earlier and handed it to this humble servant. The text was as follows:
Hujjat al-Islam wal-Muslimin Agha Sayyid Kazim Badkoubi Najafi said that his late father, Ayatullah Sayyid Muhammad Baqir Badkoubi, related:
“We traveled on foot to Karbala in the service of Ayatullah Sayyid Mahmood Shahroudi. We left our travel gear in the Badkoubi school and, tired and with blistered feet, entered the sacred courtyard of Aba Abdillah (a.s.).
An Iranian pilgrim noticed that these scholars had come to Karbala on foot, and he insisted and pleaded that they sell him the reward of their on-foot ziyara.
The late Ayatullah Shahroudi did not heed his request and proceeded toward the holy shrine. After the ziyara, we returned to the Badkoubi school and rested.
The next morning the school caretaker came and said, ‘Where are Sayyid Mahmood Shahroudi and Sayyid Muhammad Baqir Badkoubi? Someone needs to see them.’
After meeting him, we realized it was the same person from yesterday who had wanted to buy the reward of our ziyara.
He said, ‘Last night I saw Aba Abdillah (a.s.) in a dream, present in a gathering with people around him. I approached with tears and said, “I tried to buy the reward of the on-foot ziyara of these two sayyids, but they refused.”
Imam Husain (a.s.) turned to someone and said, “Go to my brother Abbas and ask him: how great is the reward of the on-foot ziyara of Sayyid Mahmood Shahroudi and Sayyid Muhammad Baqir Badkoubi?”
I went with that person to the presence of Hazrat Abbas (a.s.). He was sitting in a courtyard surrounded by a group of people. That person asked Hazrat Abbas (a.s.) the question. Hazrat turned to the angels present and asked:
“How much do you write as reward for the on-foot ziyara of these two sayyids?”
The angels took me along and asked, “What do you see?”
I looked and saw that it was raining. I replied, “I see rain falling.”
They said to me, “If Allah commands us to count the drops of this rain, we can count them. But we do not have the power to count the reward of the on-foot ziyara of these two sayyids.”’
This text had been recorded by Agha Sayyid Kazim Shahroudi on Friday, the 5th of Rabi‘ al-Awwal 1418 AH, and on Friday, 16th of Safar 1432 AH (equivalent to 2/11/1389 Solar), he placed it at the disposal of this humble servant.”
