[Qur'an 30:56] And those who are given knowledge and faith will say: Certainly you tarried according to the ordinance of Allah till the Day of Resurrection. (M. H. Shakir)

99-/8375 1 - Muhammad ibn Ya'qub narrated from Abu Muhammad al-Qasim ibn al-'Ala', who attributed it, from Abd al-'Aziz ibn Muslim, from al-Ridha (peace be upon him), in a hadith describing the Imam and who is entitled to Imamah exclusively over all other creation—until al-Ridha (peace be upon him) said:

"Thus, it (Imamah) continued among his progeny—meaning the descendants of Ibrahim (peace be upon him)—inheriting it from one another, generation after generation, until Allah, the Almighty and Majestic, caused the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his progeny) to inherit it. Allah, the Exalted, said:

'Most surely the nearest of people to Ibrahim are those who followed him, and this Prophet and those who believe; and Allah is the guardian of the believers.' [Qur'an 3:68]

Thus, Imamah belonged specifically to him (the Prophet Muhammad), and he entrusted it to Ali (peace be upon him) by the command of Allah according to what Allah had ordained. Therefore, Imamah became established among his purified progeny, whom Allah has granted knowledge and faith, as indicated by the words of the Exalted:

'And those who are given knowledge and faith will say: Certainly you tarried according to the ordinance of Allah till the Day of Resurrection.' [Qur'an 30:56] (M. H. Shakir)

Hence, Imamah remains exclusively within the descendants of Ali (peace be upon him) until the Day of Resurrection, since there is no prophet after Muhammad (peace be upon him and his progeny)."

And Ibn Babawayh narrated it in (Ma'ani al-Akhbar), saying: Abu al-Abbas Muhammad ibn Ibrahim ibn Ishaq al-Talaqani (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated to us, he said: Abu al-Qasim Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Ali al-Haruni narrated to us, he said: Abu Hamid Imran ibn Musa ibn Ibrahim narrated to us, from al-Hasan ibn al-Qasim al-Raqqam, who said: al-Qasim ibn Muslim narrated to me, from his brother Abd al-Aziz ibn Muslim, from al-Ridha (peace be upon him).

He mentioned the hadith—which is lengthy—and we have fully narrated it under the words of Allah, the Exalted:

"And your Lord creates and chooses whom He pleases; to choose is not theirs." [Qur'an 28:68] (M. H. Shakir)

99-/8376 1 - Ali ibn Ibrahim said concerning the verse:

"And those who are given knowledge and faith will say: Certainly you tarried according to the ordinance of Allah till the Day of Resurrection" [Qur'an 30:56] (M. H. Shakir):

"This verse contains an advancement and delay (in wording), and its actual sequence is: 'And those who are given knowledge and faith concerning the Book of Allah will say: Certainly you tarried till the Day of Resurrection.'"
