Taha Ayah 43-44

He said: “Al-habb (the grain) is the believer, and that is His saying, ‘And I cast down upon you love from Me’; and an-nawa (the stone-pit) is the disbeliever who withdrew from the truth and therefore did not accept it.”

And the statement of the Exalted: “And We tried you with a trial; so you stayed for years among the people of Midian, then you came hither as ordained, O Musa. And I have chosen you for Myself. Go you and your brother with My communications and be not remiss in remembering Me.” (M. H. Shakir)

Ali ibn Ibrahim: “And We tried you with a trial” means We tested you with a test. His saying, “So you stayed for years among the people of Midian” means with Shu‘ayb. And His saying, “And I have chosen you for Myself” means I chose you. And His saying, “Go you and your brother with My signs and do not slacken in remembering Me” means do not weaken.

“Go both to Firon, surely he has become inordinate; Then speak to him a gentle word, haply he may mind or fear.” (M. H. Shakir)

And it was also narrated by al-Kulayni: from Ali ibn Ibrahim, from Harun ibn Muslim, and he transmitted the hadith to its end, with slight variation in a few places.

It was also narrated by Ali ibn Ibrahim: from Harun ibn Muslim with the remaining chain and text [2].

“As for His saying, ‘speak to him a gentle word,’ it means address him with a kunya and say to him, ‘O Abu Mus‘ab.’ And Fir‘awn’s name was Abu Mus‘ab al-Walid ibn Mus‘ab. And as for His saying, ‘haply he may mind or fear,’ He said it to make Musa more eager to go; and Allah, Mighty and Majestic, knew that Fir‘awn would not mind nor fear except upon seeing the punishment. Do you not hear Allah, Mighty and Majestic, saying: ‘Until when drowning overtook him, he said: I believe that there is no god but He in whom the children of Israel believe and I am of those who submit’ [3]? But Allah did not accept his faith and said: ‘What! now! and indeed you disobeyed before and you were of the mischief-makers’ [4].”

“Until when drowning overtook him, he said: I believe that there is no god but He in Whom the children of Israel believe and I am of those who submit.” (M. H. Shakir)

“What! now! and indeed you disobeyed before and you were of the mischief-makers.” (M. H. Shakir)

“… until he said: Allah, Mighty and Majestic, says: address him with a kunya and say to him, ‘O Abu Mus‘ab’ …” Sufyan said: I said to him, “O son of the Messenger of Allah, is it permissible that Allah, Mighty and Majestic, entice His servants with the occurrence of what will not occur?” He said: “No.” I said, “Then how did Allah, Mighty and Majestic, say to Musa and Harun (peace be upon them), ‘haply he may mind or fear,’ whereas He knew that Fir‘awn would neither mind nor fear?” He said: “Indeed Fir‘awn did mind and fear, but at the sight of punishment, when faith did not benefit him. Do you not hear Allah, Mighty and Majestic, saying: ‘Until when drowning overtook him, he said: I believe that there is no god but He in Whom the children of Israel believe and I am of those who submit’ [5]? But Allah, Mighty and Majestic, did not accept his faith, and He said: ‘What! now! and indeed you disobeyed before and you were of the mischief-makers; But this day We save you in your body that you may be a sign to those after you’ [1], meaning: We cast you upon a height [2] of the land so that you may be a sign and a lesson for those after you.”

“But this day We save you in your body that you may be a sign to those after you.” (M. H. Shakir)

“He said: Our Lord is He Who gave to everything its creation, then guided it (to its goal).” (M. H. Shakir)

I asked Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) about the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: “He gave to everything its creation, then guided it.” He said: “There is nothing among Allah’s creation except that, from its form, the male is known from the female.” I said: “What is the meaning of ‘then guided’?” He said: “He guided it to lawful mating, and to illicit copulation from its form.”

And there will come—God willing—the report of the story of Fir‘awn, Musa, and Harun in two narrations from al-Baqir and al-Sadiq (peace be upon them), in Surat al-Shu‘ara’ [3] and Surat al-Qasas [4].

“Most surely there are signs in this for those endowed with understanding.” (M. H. Shakir)

Ali ibn Ibrahim said: I asked him about the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, “Most surely there are signs in this for those endowed with understanding.” He said: “By Allah, we are the ones endowed with understanding.” I said: “May I be your ransom, what is the meaning of ‘those endowed with understanding’?” He said: “It is what Allah informed His Messenger (peace be upon him and his family) would occur after him: the claim of Abu So-and-so to the caliphate and undertaking it, and another after him, and a third after them, and the Banu Umayyah. So He informed the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family), and it came to pass as Allah informed His Prophet, and as the Messenger of Allah informed ‘Ali (peace be upon him).”
