Translation 99-/7105:
And from him, from Sulaymān al-Zurārī, from Muhammad b. Khālid al-Tayālisī, from al-‘Alā’ b. Razīn al-Qallā’, from Muhammad b. Muslim, from Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him). He said: I said to him, “Those among us claim that the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: So ask the People of the Reminder if you do not know, refers to the Jews and the Christians.” He said: “Then they would be calling you to their religion.” Then he pointed with his hand to his chest and said: “We are the People of the Reminder, and we are those to be asked.”
And “the Reminder” has two meanings: the Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family) who has been called a Reminder, due to His saying, “a Reminder—a Messenger” [1]; and the Qur’an, due to His saying, “Surely We have revealed the Reminder, and surely We are its guardian” [2]. And they (blessings of Allah be upon them) are the People of the Qur’an and the People of the Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family).
And numerous reports about this verse have already come under Sūrat al-Naḥl [3], so let it be taken from there.

Muhammad b. al-‘Abbās said: Muhammad b. Hammām narrated to us, from Muhammad b. Ismā‘īl, from ‘Īsā b. Dāwūd the carpenter, from Abū al-Ḥasan Mūsā b. Ja‘far (peace be upon them), regarding the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: Certainly We have revealed to you a Book in which is your good remembrance; will you not then understand (21:10). He said: “It is obedience to the Imam after the Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family).”
Some scholars said: Its meaning is that that which is your mention, your honor, and your glory is obedience to the true Imam after the Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family).

Shakir: And how many a town which was iniquitous did We demolish, and We raised up after it another people! So when they felt Our punishment, lo! they began to fly from it. Do not fly now and come back to what you were made to lead easy lives in and to your dwellings, haply you will be questioned. They said: O woe to us! surely we were unjust. And this ceased not to be their cry till We made them cut off, extinct.

Muhammad b. Ya‘qūb: from ‘Alī b. Ibrāhīm, from his father, from Ibn Faḍḍāl, from Tha‘labah b. Maymūn, from Badr b. Khalīl al-Asadī, who said: I heard Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him) say regarding the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: So when they felt Our punishment, lo! they began to flee from it. Do not flee now and return to what you were made to live in luxury and to your dwellings, so that you may be questioned (21:12–13). He said: “When the Qā’im (peace be upon him) rises and sends [forces] to the Banū Umayyah in al-Shām, they will flee to the Romans. The Romans will say to them: ‘We will not admit you until you adopt our religion,’ so they will hang crosses around their necks and they will admit them. When the companions of the Qā’im (peace be upon him) descend near them, they will seek safety and a truce. The companions of the Qā’im (peace be upon him) will say: ‘We will not do so until you hand over to us those from among you who are from us.’” He said: “So they hand them over to them. That is His saying: Do not flee now and return to what you were made to live in luxury and to your dwellings, so that you may be questioned—that is, they will ask them about the treasures, for they have knowledge of them.” He said: “Then they will say, ‘Woe to us! surely we were unjust,’ and their cry will not cease until We make them mown down, extinguished—with the sword.” [2]

Translation 99-/7110:
Al-‘Ayyāshī: from ‘Abd al-A‘lā al-Ḥalabī, who said: Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him) said, in a narration in which he mentions the emergence of the Qā’im (peace be upon him): “It is as if I am looking at them—meaning the Qā’im (peace be upon him) and his companions—ascending from the Najaf of Kūfa, three hundred and some odd men, as if their hearts were blocks of iron. Jibrīl on his right and Mīkā’īl on his left. Awe travels before him for a month and behind him for a month. Allah supports him with five thousand angels, marked. When he ascends the Najaf he will say to his companions: ‘Devote yourselves in worship this night,’ and they will spend the night between bowing and prostrating, imploring Allah. When morning comes he will say: ‘Take us by the route of al-Nukhaylah,’ and upon Kūfa there is a massed army.” I said: “A massed army?” He said: “Yes, by Allah, until he reaches the Mosque of Ibrāhīm (peace be upon him) at al-Nukhaylah and prays two rak‘ahs in it. Then those in Kūfa from its Murji’ites and others from the army of the Sufyānī will come out to him. He will say to his companions: ‘Draw them out.’ Then he will say: ‘Charge them!’” Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him) said: “By Allah, not a single informant among them will cross the trench.”
“Then he will enter Kūfa and no believer will remain but that he will be in it, or yearn toward it—and this is the saying of the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him). Then he will say to his companions: ‘March to this tyrant,’ and he will invite him to the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family). The Sufyānī will give him allegiance in submission. Then Kalb—who are his maternal uncles—will say to him: ‘What is this you have done? By Allah, we will never give you allegiance on this.’ He will say: ‘What should I do?’ They will say: ‘Confront him.’ So he confronts him. Then the Qā’im (peace be upon him) will say to him: ‘Take your precautions, for I have delivered [the proof] to you, and I am going to fight you.’ In the morning he fights them, and Allah grants him their backs; he captures the Sufyānī and goes with him and slaughters him with his own hand.
“Then he sends a picked cavalry to the Romans, and they will bring together the remainder of Banū Umayyah. When they reach the Romans they will say: ‘Bring out to us the people of our creed who are with you.’ They refuse and say: ‘By Allah, we will not do that.’ The picked detachment will say: ‘By Allah, if we were commanded, we would fight you.’ Then they go to their ruler and present that to him, and he says: ‘Go and bring out to them their people, for these have come with authority.’ And it is the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: So when they felt Our punishment, lo! they began to flee from it. Do not flee now and return to what you were made to live in luxury and to your dwellings, so that you may be questioned—meaning the treasures that you used to hoard. They said: O woe to us! surely we were unjust. And this ceased not to be their cry till We made them mown down, extinguished—no informant among them remains.”
And the narration is long; it has come in full under His saying: And fight them until there is no sedition in Sūrat al-Anfāl [2].
And a narration with this meaning of the verse has already passed under His saying: But when they forgot that whereby they had been reminded, We opened upon them the gates of everything in Sūrat al-An‘ām [3].

Translation 99-/7111:
Muhammad b. Ya‘qūb said: Muhammad b. Yaḥyā narrated to me, from Aḥmad b. ‘Īsā, and ‘Alī b. Ibrāhīm from his father together, from al-Ḥasan b. Maḥbūb, from ‘Abd Allāh b. Ghālib al-Asadī, from his father, from Sa‘īd b. al-Musayyab, who said: ‘Alī b. al-Ḥusayn (peace be upon them) used to exhort the people, make them abstinent from this world, and encourage them toward the deeds of the Hereafter with these words every Friday in the Mosque of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family), and it was memorized from him and written down—he mentioned the narration until he (peace be upon him) said: “Indeed Allah has made you hear in His Book what He did to the unjust folk from among the people of the towns before you, where He said: And how many a town which was iniquitous did We demolish; and He only meant by ‘town’ its people, where He says: And We raised up after it another people. Then Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: So when they felt Our punishment, lo! they began to flee from it—meaning: they run away. He said: Do not flee now and return to what you were made to live in luxury and to your dwellings, so that you may be questioned. Then, when the punishment came upon them, they said: O woe to us! surely we were unjust. And this ceased not to be their cry till We made them mown down, extinct. By Allah, this is an admonition for you and a warning—if you take admonition and fear.
“Then the speech from Allah in the Book returns upon the people of disobedience and sins, for Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: And if a breath of the chastisement of your Lord were to touch them, they would certainly say: O woe to us! surely we were unjust [1]. So if you say—O people—that Allah, Mighty and Majestic, only meant by this the people of shirk, then how is that, when He says: And We will set up the just balances for the Day of Resurrection, so no soul shall be wronged in the least; and if there be the weight of a grain of mustard seed We will bring it, and sufficient are We to take account [2]? Know—servants of Allah—that for the people of shirk no balances are set up and no records are spread out; rather, they are gathered to Hell in companies. The setting up of balances and spreading out of records is for the people of Islam. So fear Allah, servants of Allah.”’

Shakir: And We did not create the heaven and the earth and what is between them for sport. Had We wished to make a diversion, We would have made it from before Ourselves: if We were going to do (that). Nay! We cast the truth against the falsehood, so that it breaks its head, and lo! it vanishes; and woe to you for what you describe.

Muhammad b. Ya‘qūb: from Muhammad b. Yaḥyā, from Aḥmad b. Muhammad, from Ibn Faḍḍāl, from Yūnus b. Ya‘qūb, from ‘Abd al-A‘lā, who said: I asked Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him) about singing, and I said: “They claim that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) permitted saying: ‘We have come to you, we have come to you; greet us, greet us, we greet you.’” He said: “They have lied. Indeed Allah, Mighty and Majestic, says: And We did not create the heaven and the earth and what is between them for sport. Had We wished to make a diversion, We would have made it from before Ourselves: if We were going to do (that). Nay! We cast the truth against the falsehood, so that it breaks its head, and lo! it vanishes; and woe to you for what you describe (21:16–18).” Then he said: “Woe to so-and-so for what he describes”—a man who was not present at the session.
