Qur’an 17:65 — M. H. Shakir: Surely (as for) My servants, you have no authority over them; and your Lord is sufficient as a Protector.

99-/6438 _13- Safwan al-Jammal said: I was with Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) when ‘Isa b. Mansur sought permission to enter. He said to him: “What is it between you and So-and-so, O ‘Isa? Is it not that he does not love you [1]!” He replied: “May I be your ransom, he speaks our words and he shows loyalty to those to whom we show loyalty.” He said: “Indeed, there is in him the haughtiness of Iblis.” He said: “May I be your ransom, does not Iblis say: You created me of fire and him You created of clay [2]?” Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) said: “Does not Allah say: And share with them in wealth and children; so Shaytan cohabits with the son of Adam like this,” and he joined his two fingers together.

99-/6439 _14- From Zurara, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), who said: I heard him say: “Al-Hajjaj was the son of a shaytan who used to have intercourse with Dhu al-Radhah [3].” Then he said: “Yusuf entered upon the mother of al-Hajjaj and intended to lie with her. She said: ‘Is it not that you only just now were with [another]? [4]’ So he refrained from her, and she gave birth to al-Hajjaj.”

99-/6440 _1- Al-‘Ayyashi: From Ja‘far b. Muhammad al-Khuza‘i, from his father, who said: I heard Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) mention in the event of Ghadir Khumm: “When the Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family) said to ‘Ali (peace be upon him) what he said and raised him up before the people, Iblis let out a scream, and the demons gathered to him and said, ‘Our master, what is this scream?’ He said: ‘Woe to you! Your day is like the day of ‘Isa; by Allah, I will mislead the creation on it.’” He said: “Then the Qur’an was sent down: And certainly Iblis found true his conjecture concerning them, so they followed him, except a party of the believers [5].” He said: “Iblis shouted again, and the demons returned to him and said, ‘Our master, what is this other scream?’ He said: ‘Woe to you! Allah—by Allah—has echoed my speech as Qur’an, and He has sent down upon him: And certainly Iblis found true his conjecture concerning them, so they followed him, except a party of the believers. Then he raised his head toward the heaven and said: ‘By Your might and majesty, I shall surely make the party catch up with the whole.’’” He said: “Then the Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family) said: In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful, Surely (as for) My servants, you have no authority over them.” He said—

…so Iblis let out a scream, and the demons returned to him and said, “Our master, what is this third scream?” He said: “By Allah, it is because of the companions of ‘Ali. But—by Your might and majesty, O Lord—I will surely adorn sins for them until I make them hateful to You.” He said: Then Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) said: “By Him Who sent Muhammad with the truth, the demons and devils swarm a believer more than hornets swarm over meat; yet the believer is more solid than a mountain. A mountain, when the axe approaches it, you hew from it; but the believer does not depart from his religion.”

99-/6441 _2- From ‘Abd al-Rahman b. Salim, regarding Allah’s saying: Surely (as for) My servants, you have no authority over them, and your Lord is sufficient as a Protector: He said: It was revealed about ‘Ali b. Abi Talib (peace be upon him), and we hope that it extends to whomever Allah loves among His Muslim servants.

Qur’an 17:66 — M. H. Shakir: Your Lord is He Who drives the ships for you in the sea that you may seek of His bounty; surely He is ever Merciful to you.

Qur’an 17:67 — M. H. Shakir: And when distress afflicts you in the sea, there is lost (from you) those that you call upon except He; but when He brings you safe to the land, you turn aside; and man is ever ungrateful.

Qur’an 17:68 — M. H. Shakir: What! do you then feel secure that He should not make a tract of land to swallow you up, or send on you a tornado? Then shall you not find a guardian for yourselves.

Qur’an 17:69 — M. H. Shakir: Or, do you feel secure that He will not send you back into it a second time, then send on you a fierce gale of wind and drown you for your ungratefulness, then you shall not find in it a pursuer for yourselves.

99-/6442 _3- ‘Ali b. Ibrahim: Then He said: Your Lord is He Who drives the ships in the sea for you, that is, the vessels in the sea, that you may seek of His bounty; surely He is ever Merciful to you. And when distress afflicts you in the sea, those whom you call upon are lost except Him, that is, those you call upon other than Allah are nullified. But when He brings you safe to the land, you turn aside, and man is ever ungrateful. Then He frightened them, saying: Do you then feel secure that He should not make a tract of land swallow you up, or send on you a storm of stones, that is, a chastisement and destruction? Then you shall not find for yourselves any guardian. Or do you feel secure that He will not send you back into it another time, that is, one more time, and send upon you a blasting wind, meaning it comes from every side, and drown you for what you disbelieved? Then you shall not find for yourselves against Us any avenger.

99-/6443 _4- He said: And in the narration of Abu al-Jarud, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), regarding His saying: a blasting wind (qasifan mina al-rih), he said: “It is the violent wind (al-‘asif).” And His saying: a pursuer (tabi‘an), he said: “It means: a guardian (wakilan); and it is said: a guarantor (kafeelan); and it is said: an avenger (tha’iran).”
