The Effects that Result from Abandoning the Ziyārah
Chapter Seven: Concerning the effects that result from abandoning the ziyārah of that noble one (a.s.), and they are many:
First: It is narrated in the tradition of al-Halabi from Imam al-Sadiq (a.s.) that:
Whoever neglects the ziyārah of Imam Husain (a.s.) despite having the ability to perform it becomes disobedient to the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) and the Imams of Guidance (a.s.). [877]
Second: In the narration of ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Kathir, it is reported from that Imam (a.s.) that he said:
“If a person performs Hajj every year throughout his lifetime and yet has not visited Imam Husain (a.s.), then he has certainly abandoned one of the rights of the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.).” [878]
And in another narration it is stated:
“If a person performs a thousand Hajj pilgrimages and does not visit the grave of Imam Husain (a.s.), then he has abandoned one of the rights of Allah.” [879]
Fourth: He has committed an act of neglect toward Imam Husain (a.s.), as it is narrated from Amir al-Muʾminin Ali (a.s.) that he said:
“May my father be sacrificed for Imam Husain (a.s.), who will be killed on the plains of Kufah. It is as though I can see the wild beasts of the desert stretching their necks toward him and lamenting over him until morning. When this event occurs, then beware of showing neglect.” [880]
Meaning: by abandoning his ziyārah.
There are other narrations as well.
Fifth: In the narration of Ali ibn Maymun al-Saʾigh from Imam al-Sadiq (a.s.), he said:
“It has reached me that some of our Shias allow one year, two years, or even more to pass without visiting Imam Husain (a.s.).”
I said:
“May I be your ransom, yes, this is indeed so. I know many people who are like this.”
He (a.s.) said:
“By Allah! They have diminished their share, distanced themselves from the reward of Allah, and become remote from the neighborhood of the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) in Paradise.”
I said:
“If one of them sends someone on his behalf for the ziyārah,
will that suffice?”
He (a.s.) replied:
“Yes, but if he goes himself it is better, and his reward is greater.” [881]
Sixth: It decreases one's lifespan, as has been mentioned in numerous narrations. Some narrations indicate that abandoning it necessarily reduces one's lifespan by one year. [882]
Seventh: If the one who abandons the ziyārah enters Paradise, his rank will be lower than that of all the believers. [883]
And in another narration it is stated that he will be merely a guest of the people of Paradise. [884]
And in the previous narration it was stated that he will be distant from the neighborhood of the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.). [885]
Eighth: He will not be counted among the Shias, as has been explicitly stated in a narration. [886]
Ninth: If the abandonment is due to negligence, indifference, or belittlement, he will be among the people of Hell. [887]
Rather, the apparent wording of the narration is unrestricted, and because of this some scholars inclined to the view that visiting him once in a lifetime, when one possesses the means and ability, is obligatory. [888]
