“O Two Eyes, Pour Forth Tears”

“O Two Eyes, Pour Forth Tears”

As for feeding orphans and the needy, then visiting him is like giving water to the thirsty members of his household and feeding them.

As for visiting believers and honoring them, then visiting that noble Imam is the visitation of the Master of the Believers and is a means of honoring and venerating him.

As for giving a good loan (Qarḍ al-Ḥasanah), a loan given to a needy believer is considered a loan given to Allah. Then what can be said about lending to the Imam of the believers, who was distressed and far from his homeland, and from whom everything was taken, to the extent that his noble body was left in the desert and no one came to him?

Therefore, when you set out toward him and go to visit him, it is indeed a great loan upon Allah, and I do not know how many times He will multiply its reward—He, the Most Generous, who has promised reward to those who give Him a good loan.

As for visiting the sick, if a person neglects it, Allah will reproach him on the Day of Resurrection, saying:

“Why did you not visit Me when I was sick?” [784]

Then, if you reflect carefully, visiting that noble Imam is a visitation—not of one suffering from fever or a headache—but rather the visitation of a wounded, thirsty one, a grief-stricken and distressed one; rather, it is the visitation of one whose limbs were cut apart and whose body was crushed.

It is narrated that Lady Fāṭimah (ʿalayhā al-salām) was seen in a dream lamenting with words to this effect:

“O two eyes, pour forth tears and continue flowing; do not dry up for the one whose chest was crushed upon the land of Karbalā.” [785]

Therefore, when you go intending to visit him, intend it as a visit to a suffering patient, so that you may attain the reward of caring for and visiting the sick.

As for preparing a believer for burial, especially a believer who is a stranger, the virtue of doing so is beyond measure. Therefore, visiting that noble Imam is like accompanying his funeral procession, washing and shrouding that pure body, and burying that radiant body within your heart through your heartfelt attention to his sacred grave.

As for bringing joy to the heart of a believer—which is among the greatest acts and a cause of salvation from terrors [786]—it has been narrated concerning the virtue of visitation that if the visitor knew how much joy enters the hearts of the Messenger of Allah (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa ālihi), Amīr al-Muʾminīn (ʿalayhi al-salām), Fāṭimah al-Zahrāʾ (ʿalayhā al-salām), the Imams of Guidance, and all the martyrs; and if he knew how much they would pray for him and what rewards have been prepared for him in this world and the next, he would wish that his home were always there, or that he would never return to remain in his own home.
