An-Nahl Ayah 18

[16:18] And if you would count Allah's favors, you will not be able to number them; most surely Allah is Forgiving, Merciful. (M. H. Shakir)

99-/5994 Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) said: We are the signs, and the star is the Messenger of Allah (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family). And indeed he said: Surely Allah has made the stars a security for the inhabitants of the heaven, and He has made my Household a security for the inhabitants of the earth.

99-/5995 Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub—from ‘Ali ibn Muhammad—from some of his companions—raising it—said: When ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn (peace be upon them) recited this verse: “And if you would count Allah’s blessing, you will not be able to number it,” he would say: Glory be to Him Who has placed in no one, regarding knowledge of His bounties, anything but the knowledge of shortcoming from knowing them—just as He has not placed in anyone, regarding knowledge of comprehending Him, more than the knowledge that He cannot be comprehended. So the Mighty and Majestic has accepted as thanks the knowers’ recognition of their shortcoming from knowing His thanks; thus He made their recognition of shortcoming to be gratitude. Just as He knew the knowledge of the knowing—that they do not comprehend Him—so He made that faith, as a knowledge from Him that He has measured [1] the capacity of the servants, and it does not go beyond that. For nothing of His creation reaches the utmost limit of His worship; and how can one reach the utmost limit of worship of Him Who has no limit and no how? Exalted is Allah in rank above that, a great exaltation.

And this hadith and others have already been mentioned under His saying: “And He has given you of all you asked of Him; and if you would count Allah’s blessing, you will not be able to number it,” in Surat Ibrahim [2].

[16:20] And those whom they call on besides Allah create nothing while they are themselves created.

[16:21] Dead (are they), not living, and they know not when they shall be raised.

[16:22] Your God is one God; so those who do not believe in the hereafter, their hearts are ignorant and they are proud.

[16:23] Truly Allah knows what they hide and what they manifest; surely He does not love the proud.

[16:24] And when it is said to them, What is it that your Lord has revealed? they say, Stories of the ancients;

[16:25] That they may bear their burdens entirely on the day of resurrection and also of the burdens of those whom they lead astray without knowledge; now surely evil is what they bear. (M. H. Shakir)

99-/5996 ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim: It is a refutation of the idol-worshipers. He said: And His saying, “And when it is said to them: What is it that your Lord has sent down?”—about ‘Ali—they say, “Stories of the ancients,” meaning the lies of the ancients.
