Ar-Ra'd Ayah 23-24

Quran 13:22 — M. H. Shakir: And those who are constant, seeking the pleasure of their Lord, and keep up prayer and spend (benevolently) out of what We have given them secretly and openly and turn off evil with good, these shall have the (happy) issue of the abode,

99-/5549 - Ali ibn Ibrahim: “And they repel evil with good” means: they ward it off.

99-/5550 - And from him, he said: My father narrated to me, from Hammad, from Abu Basir, from Abu Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: “The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) said to Ali (peace be upon him): O Ali, there is no house in which there is joy except that sorrow follows it, and there is no worry except that it has relief—except the worry of the people of the Fire. So when you do an evil deed, follow it with a good deed that quickly effaces it. And you must perform acts of goodness, for they repel the misfortunes of evil. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) said this to the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) by way of instructing people, not because the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) had evil deeds he had done.”

99-/5551 - And from him, he said: My father narrated to me, from al-Nadr ibn Suwayd, from Muhammad ibn Qays, from Abu Sayyar, from Abu Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: “One day the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) came, placing his hand on the shoulder of al-Abbas. The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) met him, so the Messenger of Allah embraced him and kissed the spot between his eyes. Then al-Abbas greeted Ali (peace be upon him), and he returned his greeting lightly [1]. Al-Abbas became angry and said: O Messenger of Allah, Ali does not leave off his pride! The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) said: O Abbas, do not say that about Ali. I just met Jibra’il, and he said to me: The two angels assigned to Ali met me just now and said: We have not written against him a single sin from his birth to this day.”

Quran 13:23-24 — M. H. Shakir: Gardens of perpetual abode; they shall enter them and those who have done good from among their fathers and their wives and their offspring; and the angels shall enter in upon them from every gate: Peace be on you because you were constant, how excellent, is then, the issue of the abode.

99-/5552 - Ali ibn Ibrahim said: It was revealed concerning the Imams (peace be upon them) and their Shia who were patient.

99-/5553 - And from him, he said: My father narrated to me, from Ibn Abi Umayr, from Jamil, from Abu Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: “We are patient, and our Shia are more patient than us, because we were patient with knowledge, while they are patient regarding that which they do not know.”

99-/5554 - Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub: from Abu Ali al-Ash‘ari, from Mu‘alla ibn Muhammad, from al-Washsha’, from some of his companions, from Abu Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: “Indeed, we are patient, and our Shia are more patient than us.” I said: May I be your ransom, how are your Shia more patient than you? He said: “Because we are patient over what we know, and our Shia are patient over what they do not know.”

99-/5555 - And from him: from Muhammad ibn Yahya, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad, from Ibn Sinan, from Abu al-Jarud, from al-Asbagh, who said: The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) said: “Patience is of two kinds: patience at affliction, which is good and beautiful, and better than that is patience at what Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has forbidden you. And remembrance is of two kinds: remembrance of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, at affliction, and better than that is remembrance of Allah at what He has forbidden you, so that it becomes a restraint.”

99-/5556 - And from him: from Muhammad ibn Yahya, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa, who said: Yahya ibn Sulaym al-Ta’ifi informed me, who said: ‘Amr ibn Shimr al-Yamani informed me, raising the hadith to Ali (peace be upon him), who said: “The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) said: Patience is three [kinds]: patience at affliction, patience in obedience, and patience in refraining from sin. Whoever is patient at affliction until he dispels it with good consolation, Allah writes for him three hundred degrees—the distance between each degree being like that between the heaven and the earth. Whoever is patient in obedience, Allah writes for him six hundred degrees—the distance between each degree being like that between the depths of the earth and the Throne. And whoever is patient in refraining from sin, Allah writes for him nine hundred degrees—the distance between each degree being like that between the depths of the earth and the utmost limit of the Throne.”

99-/5557 - And from him: from Ali ibn Ibrahim, from his father, from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr, from Sayf ibn ‘Umayrah, from Abu Hamzah al-Thumali, who said: Abu Abdillah (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever among the believers is tried with a tribulation and is patient with it, he will have a reward like that of a thousand martyrs.” [1]

99-/5558 - And from him: from Ali ibn Ibrahim, from his father, from Ibn Mahbub, from ‘Abdullah ibn Marhum, from Abu Sayyar, from Abu Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: “When the believer enters his grave, the prayer is at his right, the zakat at his left, and righteousness overshadowing him, while patience stands aside. When the two angels charged with questioning him enter upon him, patience says to the prayer, the zakat, and righteousness: ‘Take charge of your companion; and if you are unable regarding him, then I am his protection.’”

99-/5559 - Al-‘Ayyashi: from al-Hasan ibn Mahbub, from Abu Walad, who said: I said to Abu Abdillah (peace be upon him): May I be your ransom, a man among our companions, pious, Muslim, frequent in prayer, has been tried with a love of diversion, and he listens to singing. He said: “Does that prevent him from praying at its time, or from fasting, or from visiting a sick person, or attending a funeral, or visiting a brother?” I said: No, it does not prevent him from anything of goodness and righteousness. He said: “This is among the steps of Satan; it is forgiven for him, God willing.” Then he said: “A group of angels found fault with the children of Adam for pleasures and desires—I mean for you the lawful, not the unlawful. So Allah took offense on behalf of the believing children of Adam at the angels’ reproach of them. Thus Allah cast into the minds of those angels pleasures and desires so that they would not find fault with the believers. When that occurred in [1] their minds, they cried out to Allah about it and said: Our Lord, Your pardon, Your pardon! Return us to that for which You created us and [2] chose us, for we fear that we will come to be in a confused matter [3]. So Allah removed that from their minds. Then, when it is the Day of Resurrection and the people of Paradise are in Paradise, those angels ask permission to enter upon the people of Paradise, and permission is granted them. They enter upon them, greet them, and say to them: Peace be upon you for that you were patient in the world in refraining from lawful pleasures and desires.”

99-/5560 - From Muhammad ibn al-Haytham, from a man, from Abu Abdillah (peace be upon him): “Peace be upon you because you were patient over poverty in the world, so excellent is the end of the abode”—he said: meaning the martyrs.
