38. Special Favor of Imam Husain (a.s.) toward a Lady

Ayatollah Sayyid Sadiq Shirazi said: Around the shrine of Imam Husain (a.s.) there are graves, all of which have empty spaces beneath them. This underground chamber was the burial place of scholars and righteous people. The entrance to this chamber was always blocked by a large stone, and whenever a corpse was brought, a person named Haj Abdul-Ridha, known as “the gravedigger,” would take the body down, place it facing the qibla on its right side, put its face on the earth, and place a brick behind it to keep it from turning over.

If the deceased was a woman, a mahram (close male relative) would accompany Haj Abdul-Ridha so that the mahram would place the woman’s face on the earth. This usually took about five minutes.

One day they brought a woman from a nearby village for burial. Her only mahram was her 22-year-old son, and his acquaintances said, “He is still young; if he goes down, he may become frightened. You should take the corpse yourself.”

Haj Abdul-Ridha took the body down. Instead of taking five minutes, it took twenty minutes. Everyone grew worried. They took a lantern and went down into the chamber and saw that Haj Abdul-Ridha had fainted. Two people carried him out, sprinkled water on his face until he regained consciousness.

As soon as he woke up, he asked: “Where is the son?” The deceased woman’s son came forward and said, “I am here.” He asked: “What did your mother do?” He said: “She was a housewife.” He asked: “What was her connection to Imam Husain (a.s.)?” He said: “She would attend mourning gatherings and weep.” He asked: “Anything else?” He said: “Nothing.” He asked: “Did she ever hold gatherings herself?” He said: “No, we didn’t have those means.”

They asked him, “So what happened?”

He said: “Like any other corpse, I brought her to the burial spot, I wanted to uncover her face and place it on the earth, since I was non-mahram, I pulled back the shroud from under her face, being careful that her face did not become visible. In that moment, I saw a light appear from under the blessed shrine and come toward this deceased lady — as if the sun was rising from there. When I saw that light, I lost consciousness.”

The deceased woman’s son said: “My mother had made a vow to Imam Husain (a.s.) that the income of her Thursdays would be spent for Imam Husain (a.s.). On Thursdays she would milk the cow, keep the milk, and give it to pilgrims traveling on foot. Eggs, dates, and anything else that came to her on Thursdays, she would give to the pilgrims. Even if we ourselves needed it, she would borrow from neighbors and would not touch it.”

Then Ayatollah Shirazi pointed out an interesting note, saying: In this underground chamber, hundreds of people are buried — one from yesterday, one from two days ago, one from a month ago, another from a year ago, another from ten years ago — and since no soil is placed on the corpses, whenever the entrance is opened, one would expect a smell of decay to fill the place. But never has there been any smell of decay.
