Allah mocks them—that is, He recompenses them in the Hereafter with the requital for their mockery of the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him).
99-/339 _4- Ibn ‘Abbās said: When it is the Day of Resurrection, God, exalted is He, will command the creation to pass over the Bridge. The believers will pass on to Paradise, and the hypocrites will fall into Hell. God will say: O Mālik, mock the hypocrites in Hell. So Mālik will open a door from Hell toward Paradise and call out to them: O company of hypocrites, here, here—ascend from Hell to Paradise! The hypocrites will swim in the seas of Hell for seventy autumns; when they reach that door and are about to exit, he will shut it in their faces, and he will open for them another door to Paradise from a different place and call out to them: Exit to Paradise from this door! They will swim as before; and when they reach it, it will be closed in front of them, and another place will be opened—and so it shall be for endless ages.
99-/340 _5- Ibn Bābawayh: Muhammad ibn Ibrāhīm ibn Ahmad ibn Yūnus al-Mu‘ādhī narrated to us, who said: Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Sa‘īd al-Kūfī al-Hamdanī narrated to us, who said: ‘Alī ibn al-Hasan ibn Faddāl narrated to us, from his father, from al-Riḍā (peace be upon him). He said: I asked him about the saying of God, Mighty and Majestic: “Allah mocks them.” He said: Indeed, Blessed and Exalted is God—He does not mock; rather, He recompenses them with the recompense of mockery.
99-/341 _6- ‘Alī ibn Ibrāhīm said: “And He prolongs them in their inordinacy, blindly wandering” means: He leaves them.
Qur’an 2:16 (M. H. Shakir):
These are they who buy error for the right direction, so their bargain shall bring no gain, nor are they the followers of the right direction.
99-/342 _1- The Knowledgeable Imam (peace be upon him) said: “Those are the ones who purchased error—they sold the religion of God and took in exchange for it disbelief in God. So ‘their bargain brought no gain’—that is, they gained nothing in their trade in the Hereafter, because they bought the Fire and its various kinds of torment in place of the Garden that had been prepared for them, had they believed; and ‘they were not guided’ to truth and rightness.”

99-/343_2- ‘Alī ibn Ibrāhīm: “Error” here means bewilderment, and “guidance” means clarification; so they chose bewilderment and error over guidance and clarification, and God struck for them a parable.
Qur’an 2:17-18 (M. H. Shakir):
Their parable is like the parable of one who kindled a fire but when it had illumined all around him, Allah took away their light, and left them in utter darkness—they do not see. Deaf, dumb (and) blind, so they will not turn back.
99-/344 _1- Mūsā ibn Ja‘far (peace be upon him) said: “The likeness of these hypocrites is like the one who kindled a fire and by it saw what was around him; but when he had seen, God took away its light by a wind He sent and extinguished it, or by rain. Likewise is the likeness of these hypocrites: when God, exalted is He, took from them the pledge of allegiance to ‘Alī ibn Abī Ṭālib (peace be upon him), they were given outwardly the testimony that there is no god but Allah, alone without partner; that Muḥammad is His servant and His messenger; and that ‘Alī is His friend, His legatee, His heir, and His caliph among his community; the one who settles his debts, fulfills his promises, and undertakes in his stead the governance of God’s servants. By it he inherited the inheritances of the Muslims, and by it he married among the Muslims; so they showed him loyalty on its account, defended him well because of it, and took him as a brother, protecting him from what they protect themselves—because they heard from him for the sake of that testimony. Then when death came upon him, he fell under the judgment of the Lord of the worlds, Knower of secrets, to Whom nothing is hidden. Punishment took them for the inner reality of their disbelief; that was when their light went out and they were left in the darknesses of God’s punishment, the darknesses of the decrees of the Hereafter, seeing no way out and finding no escape from it. Then he said: ‘Deaf’—that is, they will be made deaf in the Hereafter in its punishment; ‘dumb’—they will be struck dumb there between its layers of fires; ‘blind’—they will be made blind there. And that is like His saying, Mighty and Majestic: ‘And We will gather him on the Day of Resurrection blind’ [4], and His saying:”
