Hud Ayah 69-83

أَصْبَحُوا وَ وُجُوهُهُمْ مُسْوَدَّةٌ،فَمَشَى بَعْضُهُمْ إِلَى بَعْضٍ،فَقَالُوا:يَا قَوْمِ،أَتَاكُمْ مَا قَالَ لَكُمْ صَالِحٌ.فَقَالَ الْعُتَاةُ مِنْهُمْ:قَدْ أَتَانَا مَا قَالَ لَنَا صَالِحٌ؛فَلَمَّا كَانَ نِصْفُ اللَّيْلِ أَتَاهُمْ جَبْرَئِيلُ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ)،فَصَرَخَ بِهِمْ صَرْخَةً خَرَقَتْ تِلْكَ الصَّرْخَةُ أَسْمَاعَهُمْ،وَ فَلَقَتْ .قُلُوبَهُمْ،وَ صَدَعَتْ أَكْبَادَهُمْ،وَ قَدْ كَانُوا فِي تِلْكَ الثَّلاَثَةِ أَيَّامٍ قَدْ تَحَنَّطُوا وَ تَكَفَّنُوا،وَ عَلِمُوا أَنَّ الْعَذَابَ نَازِلٌ بِهِمْ،فَمَاتُوا جَمِيعاً فِي طَرْفَةِ عَيْنٍ،صَغِيرُهُمْ وَ كَبِيرُهُمْ،فَلَمْ يَبْقَ لَهُمْ نَاعِقَةٌ وَ لاَ رَاغِيَةٌ وَ لاَ شَيْءٌ إِلاَّ أَهْلَكَهُ اللَّهُ،فَأَصْبَحُوا فِي دِيَارِهِمْ وَ مَضَاجِعِهِمْ مَوْتَى أَجْمَعِينَ،ثُمَّ أَرْسَلَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِمْ مَعَ الصَّيْحَةِ النَّارَ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ فَأَحْرَقَتْهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ،وَ كَانَتْ هَذِهِ قِصَّتَهُمْ».

Translation: They awoke with their faces darkened. They walked to one another and said, “O my people, what Salih told you has come to you.” The defiant among them said, “What Salih told us has indeed come.” When it was midnight, Gabriel (peace be upon him) came to them and screamed at them—a scream that tore through their hearing, split their hearts, and shattered their innards. During those three days they had already applied embalming and donned shrouds, knowing that punishment would descend upon them. Then they all died in the blink of an eye, the young among them and the old. Not a squawk nor a bleat nor anything remained except that God destroyed it. So they were in their homes and upon their couches, all dead. Then God sent down upon them, along with the Cry, fire from the sky, and it burned them all. Such was their story.

قَدْ تَقَدَّمَ حَدِيثُ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ،عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ)مِنْ طَرِيقِ الْعَيَّاشِيِّ[فِي مَعْنَى الْآيَةِ]،فِي سُورَةِ الْأَعْرَافِ.

Translation: The hadith of Abu Hamzah from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) through al-‘Ayyashi [regarding the meaning of the verse] has already preceded in Surah al-A‘raf.

قوله تعالى:

وَ لَقَدْ جٰاءَتْ رُسُلُنٰا إِبْرٰاهِيمَ بِالْبُشْرىٰ قٰالُوا سَلاٰماً قٰالَ سَلاٰمٌ فَمٰا لَبِثَ أَنْ جٰاءَ بِعِجْلٍ حَنِيذٍ -إلى قوله تعالى- وَ أَمْطَرْنٰا عَلَيْهٰا حِجٰارَةً مِنْ سِجِّيلٍ مَنْضُودٍ* مُسَوَّمَةً عِنْدَ رَبِّكَ وَ مٰا هِيَ مِنَ الظّٰالِمِينَ بِبَعِيدٍ [69-83]

Translation (Quran 11:69–83, M. H. Shakir):

- And certainly Our messengers came to Ibrahim with good news. They said: Peace. Peace, said he, and he made no delay in bringing a roasted calf.

- But when he saw that their hands were not extended towards it, he deemed them strange and conceived fear of them. They said: Fear not, surely we are sent to Lut’s people.

- And his wife was standing (by), so she laughed, then We gave her the good news of Ishaq and after Ishaq of (a son’s son) Yaqoub.

- She said: O wonder! shall I bear a son when I am an extremely old woman and this my husband an extremely old man? Most surely this is a wonderful thing.

- They said: Do you wonder at Allah’s bidding? The mercy of Allah and His blessings are on you, O people of the house, surely He is Praised, Glorious.

- So when fear had gone away from Ibrahim and the good news came to him, he began to plead with Us for Lut’s people.

- Most surely Ibrahim was forbearing, tender-hearted, oft-returning (to Allah).

- O Ibrahim! leave off this, surely the bidding of your Lord has come to pass, and surely there must come to them a chastisement which cannot be averted.

- And when Our messengers came to Lut, he was grieved on their account and he lacked strength to protect them; and he said: This is a hard day.

- And his people came rushing towards him, and before this they used to commit abominations; he said: O my people! these are my daughters— they are purer for you, so guard against (the punishment of) Allah and do not disgrace me with regard to my guests; is there not among you one right-minded man?

- They said: Certainly you know that we have no claim on your daughters, and most surely you know what we desire.

- He said: Ah! that I had power to suppress you, rather I shall have recourse to a strong support.

- They said: O Lut! we are the messengers of your Lord; they shall by no means reach you; therefore remove your followers in a part of the night and let none of you turn back— except your wife, for surely whatsoever befalls them shall befall her; surely their appointed time is the morning; is not the morning nigh?

- So when Our decree came to pass, We turned (the cities) upside down and rained down upon them stones, of what had been decreed, one after another.

- Marked (for punishment) with your Lord and it is not far off from the unjust.

99-/5134 _1- مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ:عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ يَحْيَى،عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى،عَنِ ابْنِ فَضَّالٍ،عَنْ دَاوُدَ بْنِ فَرْقَدٍ،عَنْ أَبِي يَزِيدَ الْحَمَّارِ،عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ)قَالَ: «إِنَّ اللَّهَ تَعَالَى بَعَثَ أَرْبَعَةَ أَمْلاَكٍ فِي إِهْلاَكِ قَوْمِ لُوطٍ:جَبْرَئِيلَ،وَ مِيكَائِيلَ،وَ إِسْرَافِيلَ،وَ كَرُّوبِيلَ(عَلَيْهِمْ السَّلاَمُ)،فَمَرُّوا بِإِبْرَاهِيمَ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ)وَ هُمْ مُعْتَمُّونَ،فَسَلَّمُوا عَلَيْهِ فَلَمْ يَعْرِفْهُمْ،وَ رَأَى هَيْئَةً حَسَنَةً،فَقَالَ:لاَ يَخْدُمُ هَؤُلاَءِ أَحَدٌ إِلاَّ أَنَا بِنَفْسِي،وَ كَانَ صَاحِبَ ضِيَافَةٍ،فَشَوَى لَهُمْ عِجْلاً سَمِيناً حَتَّى أَنْضَجَهُ ثُمَّ قَرَّبَهُ إِلَيْهِمْ،فَلَمَّا وَضَعَهُ بَيْنَ أَيْدِيهِمْ رَأَى أَيْدِيَهُمْ لاَ تَصِلُ إِلَيْهِ،نَكِرَهُمْ وَ أَوْجَسَ مِنْهُمْ خِيفَةً،فَلَمَّا رَأَى ذَلِكَ جَبْرَئِيلُ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ)حَسَرَ الْعِمَامَةَ عَنْ وَجْهِهِ وَ عَنْ رَأْسِهِ فَعَرَفَهُ إِبْرَاهِيمُ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ)،فَقَالَ:أَنْتَ هُوَ؟قَالَ:نَعَمْ:

وَ مَرَّتِ امْرَأَتُهُ سَارَةُ،فَبَشَّرَهَا بِإِسْحَاقَ،وَ مِنْ وَرَاءِ إِسْحَاقَ يَعْقُوبَ.فَقَالَتْ مَا قَالَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ،وَ أَجَابُوهَا بِمَا فِي الْكِتَابِ الْعَزِيزِ.

فَقَالَ لَهُمْ إِبْرَاهِيمُ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ):لِمَاذَا جِئْتُمْ؟قَالُوا:فِي إِهْلاَكِ قَوْمِ لُوطٍ.فَقَالَ لَهُمْ:إِنْ كَانَ فِيهَا مِائَةٌ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ

Translation: Muhammad b. Ya‘qub, from Muhammad b. Yahya, from Ahmad b. Muhammad b. ‘Isa, from Ibn Faddal, from Dawud b. Farqad, from Abu Yazid al-Hammar, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) said: “Indeed God the Exalted sent four angels to destroy the people of Lot: Gabriel, Michael, Israfil, and Karubil (peace be upon them). They passed by Abraham (peace be upon him) while veiled, and they greeted him; he did not recognize them but saw fine bearing in them. He said, ‘None shall serve these except I myself,’ for he was a master of hospitality. He roasted for them a fat calf until it was fully done, then brought it near to them. When he set it before them, he saw their hands not reaching toward it; he found them strange and felt fear of them. When Gabriel (peace be upon him) saw that, he uncovered the turban from his face and head, and Abraham (peace be upon him) recognized him. He said, ‘Is it you?’ He said, ‘Yes.’

His wife Sarah passed by, and he gave her the good news of Isaac, and after Isaac, Jacob. She said what God, Mighty and Majestic, has mentioned, and they answered her with what is in the Mighty Book.

Abraham (peace be upon him) said to them, ‘Why have you come?’ They said, ‘To destroy the people of Lot.’ He said to them, ‘If there are a hundred believers in it, will you destroy them?’” [continues in next entry]

أَ تُهْلِكُونَهُمْ؟قَالَ جَبْرَئِيلُ لاَ.قَالَ:وَ إِنْ كَانَ فِيهِمْ خَمْسُونَ؟قَالَ:لاَ.قَالَ:وَ إِنْ كَانَ فِيهِمْ ثَلاَثُونَ؟قَالَ:لاَ.قَالَ:وَ إِنْ كَانَ فِيهِمْ عِشْرُونَ؟قَالَ:لاَ.قَالَ:وَ إِنْ كَانَ فِيهِمْ عَشَرَةٌ؟قَالَ:لاَ.قَالَ:وَ إِنْ كَانَ فِيهِمْ خَمْسَةٌ؟قَالَ:لاَ.قَالَ: وَ إِنْ كَانَ فِيهِمْ وَاحِدٌ؟ قَالَ لاَ قَالَ:فَإِنَّ فِيهَا لُوطاً.قَالُوا:نَحْنُ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنْ فِيهَا،لَنُنَجِّيَنَّهُ وَ أَهْلَهُ إِلاَّ امْرَأَتَهُ كَانَتْ مِنَ الْغَابِرِينَ.ثُمَّ مَضَوْا».

قَالَ:وَ قَالَ الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ:لاَ أَعْلَمُ هَذَا الْقَوْلَ إِلاَّ وَ هُوَ يَسْتَبْقِيهِمْ،وَ هُوَ قَوْلُ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ: يُجٰادِلُنٰا فِي قَوْمِ لُوطٍ .

«فَأَتَوْا لُوطاً وَ هُوَ فِي زِرَاعَةٍ لَهُ قُرْبَ الْمَدِينَةِ،فَسَلَّمُوا عَلَيْهِ وَ هُمْ مُعْتَمُّونَ،فَلَمَّا رَآهُمْ رَأَى هَيْئَةً حَسَنَةً،عَلَيْهِمْ عَمَائِمُ بِيضٌ وَ ثِيَابٌ بِيضٌ،فَقَالَ لَهُمُ:اَلْمَنْزِلَ؟فَقَالُوا:نَعَمْ فَتَقَدَّمَهُمْ وَ مَشَوْا خَلْفَهُ،فَنَدِمَ عَلَى عَرْضِهِ الْمَنْزِلَ عَلَيْهِمْ، فَقَالَ:أَيَّ شَيْءٍ صَنَعْتُ،آتِي بِهِمْ قَوْمِي وَ أَنَا أَعْرِفُهُمْ؟ فَالْتَفَتَ إِلَيْهِمْ،فَقَالَ:إِنَّكُمْ لَتَأْتُونَ شِرَاراً مِنْ خَلْقِ اللَّهُ.قَالَ جَبْرَئِيلُ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ):لاَ تَعْجَلْ عَلَيْهِمْ حَتَّى يَشْهَدَ عَلَيْهِمْ ثَلاَثَ مَرَّاتٍ.فَقَالَ جَبْرَئِيلُ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ):هَذِهِ وَاحِدَةٌ.ثُمَّ مَشَى سَاعَةً ثُمَّ الْتَفَتَ إِلَيْهِمْ،فَقَالَ:إِنَّكُمْ لَتَأْتُونَ شِرَاراً مِنْ خَلْقِ اللَّهِ.فَقَالَ جَبْرَئِيلُ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ):هَذِهِ اثْنَتَانِ.ثُمَّ مَضَى فَلَمَّا بَلَغَ بَابَ الْمَدِينَةِ الْتَفَتَ إِلَيْهِمْ،فَقَالَ:إِنَّكُمْ لَتَأْتُونَ شِرَاراً مِنْ خَلْقِ اللَّهِ،فَقَالَ جَبْرَئِيلُ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ):هَذِهِ الثَّالِثَةُ.

ثُمَّ دَخَلَ وَ دَخَلُوا مَعَهُ.حَتَّى دَخَلَ مَنْزِلَهُ،فَلَمَّا رَأَتْهُمُ امْرَأَتُهُ رَأَتْ هَيْئَةً حَسَنَةً،فَصَعِدَتْ فَوْقَ السَّطْحِ فَصَفَقَتْ،فَلَمْ يَسْمَعُوا،فَدَخَّنَتْ،فَلَمَّا رَأَوُا الدُّخَانَ أَقْبَلُوا يُهْرَعُونَ،حَتَّى جَاءُوا إِلَى الْبَابِ،فَنَزَلَتْ إِلَيْهِمْ،فَقَالَتْ:

عِنْدَنَا قَوْمٌ مَا رَأَيْتُ قَوْماً قَطُّ أَحْسَنَ مِنْهُمْ هَيْئَةً.فَجَاءُوا إِلَى الْبَابِ لِيَدْخُلُوا،فَلَمَّا رَآهُمْ لُوطٌ قَامَ إِلَيْهِمْ،فَقَالَ لَهُمْ يَا قَوْمِ: فَاتَّقُوا اللّٰهَ وَ لاٰ تُخْزُونِ فِي ضَيْفِي أَ لَيْسَ مِنْكُمْ رَجُلٌ رَشِيدٌ ثُمَّ قَالَ: هٰؤُلاٰءِ بَنٰاتِي هُنَّ أَطْهَرُ لَكُمْ فَدَعَاهُمْ كُلَّهُمْ إِلَى الْحَلاَلِ،فَقَالُوا: لَقَدْ عَلِمْتَ مٰا لَنٰا فِي بَنٰاتِكَ مِنْ حَقٍّ وَ إِنَّكَ لَتَعْلَمُ مٰا نُرِيدُ فَقَالَ لَهُمْ: لَوْ أَنَّ لِي بِكُمْ قُوَّةً أَوْ آوِي إِلىٰ رُكْنٍ شَدِيدٍ -قَالَ-فَقَالَ جَبْرَئِيلُ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ):لَوْ يَعْلَمُ أَيُّ قُوَّةٍ لَهُ!فَكَاثَرُوهُ حَتَّى دَخَلُوا الْبَابَ،فَصَاحَ بِهِ:جَبْرَئِيلُ،وَ قَالَ:يَا لُوطُ،دَعْهُمْ يَدْخُلُونَ،فَلَمَّا دَخَلُوا أَهْوَى جَبْرَئِيلُ بِإِصْبَعِهِ نَحْوَهُمْ،فَذَهَبَتْ أَعْيُنُهُمْ،وَ هُوَ قَوْلُ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ: فَطَمَسْنٰا أَعْيُنَهُمْ.

ثُمَّ نَادَاهُ جَبْرَئِيلُ،فَقَالَ لَهُ: إِنّٰا رُسُلُ رَبِّكَ لَنْ يَصِلُوا إِلَيْكَ فَأَسْرِ بِأَهْلِكَ بِقِطْعٍ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ وَ قَالَ لَهُ جَبْرَئِيلُ:

إِنَّا بُعِثْنَا فِي إِهْلاَكِهِمْ.فَقَالَ:يَا جَبْرَئِيلُ،عَجِّلْ.فَقَالَ: إِنَّ مَوْعِدَهُمُ الصُّبْحُ أَ لَيْسَ الصُّبْحُ بِقَرِيبٍ فَأَمَرَهُ فَتَحَمَّلَ وَ مَنْ مَعَهُ إِلاَّ امْرَأَتَهُ،ثُمَّ اقْتَلَعَهَا-يَعْنِي الْمَدِينَةَ-جَبْرَئِيلُ بِجَنَاحِهِ مِنْ سَبْعِ أَرَضِينَ،ثُمَّ رَفَعَهَا حَتَّى سَمِعَ أَهْلُ السَّمَاءِ الدُّنْيَا نُبَاحَ الْكِلاَبِ وَ صُرَاخَ الدُّيُوكِ،ثُمَّ قَلَبَهَا وَ أَمْطَرَ عَلَيْهَا وَ عَلَى مَنْ حَوْلَ الْمَدِينَةِ حِجَارَةً مِنْ سِجِّيلٍ».

Translation: “…‘Will you destroy them?’ Gabriel said, ‘No.’ He said, ‘And if there are fifty among them?’ He said, ‘No.’ He said, ‘And if there are thirty?’ He said, ‘No.’ He said, ‘And if there are twenty?’ He said, ‘No.’ He said, ‘And if there are ten?’ He said, ‘No.’ He said, ‘And if there are five?’ He said, ‘No.’ He said, ‘And if there is one?’ He said, ‘No.’ He said, ‘But Lot is in it.’ They said, ‘We know best who is in it; surely we shall deliver him and his family, except his wife—she was of those who remained behind.’ Then they went on.”

He said: And al-Hasan b. ‘Ali said: “I know this speech only as his seeking to spare them, and it is God’s saying: ‘He pleaded with Us concerning the people of Lot.’”

“…They came to Lot while he was at a field of his near the city. They greeted him while veiled. When he saw them, he saw fine bearing upon them—white turbans and white garments. He said to them: ‘Lodging?’ They said: ‘Yes.’ He went ahead of them while they walked behind him, and he regretted offering them lodging. He said, ‘What have I done—shall I bring them to my people when I know them?’ He turned to them and said, ‘You are going to the worst of God’s creatures.’ Gabriel (peace be upon him) said: ‘Do not hasten against them until [your people] testify against themselves three times.’ Gabriel said: ‘This is once.’ He went on a while, then turned to them and said, ‘You are going to the worst of God’s creatures.’ Gabriel said: ‘This is twice.’ Then he proceeded; when he reached the city gate, he turned to them and said, ‘You are going to the worst of God’s creatures.’ Gabriel said: ‘This is the third.’

Then he entered and they entered with him until he entered his home. When his wife saw them, she saw fine bearing in them; she went up to the roof and clapped, but they did not hear; then she sent up smoke, and when they saw the smoke they came hurrying until they reached the door. She came down to them and said: ‘We have with us people whose bearing I have never seen more handsome than theirs.’ They came to the door to enter. When Lot saw them, he stood up to them and said: ‘O my people, so fear God and do not disgrace me regarding my guests. Is there not among you a right-minded man?’ Then he said: ‘These are my daughters; they are purer for you,’ thus he invited them all to what is lawful. They said: ‘You surely know we have no claim in your daughters, and you know well what we desire.’ He said to them: ‘If only I had power against you, or could betake myself to a strong support.’ Gabriel (peace be upon him) said: ‘If only he knew what strength he has!’ They overpowered him until they entered the door. Gabriel called out to him and said: ‘O Lot, let them enter.’ When they entered, Gabriel pointed with his finger toward them, and their eyes were gone— and it is God’s saying: ‘So We blotted out their eyes.’ Then Gabriel called to him and said: ‘We are the messengers of your Lord; they shall not reach you. So set out with your family in a part of the night…’ He said to him: ‘We have been sent to destroy them.’ He said: ‘O Gabriel, hasten!’ He said: ‘Their appointed time is the morning; is not the morning near?’ He ordered him, so he set forth, and those with him, except his wife. Then Gabriel uprooted it—meaning the city—with his wing from seven earths, then raised it until the inhabitants of the lowest heaven heard the barking of the dogs and the crowing of the cocks. Then he overturned it and rained upon it and upon those around the city stones of baked clay.”

99-/5135 _2- وَ عَنْهُ:عَنْ عِدَّةٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا،عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ،عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ،قَالَ:أَخْبَرَنِي زَكَرِيَّا بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ،عَنْ أَبِيهِ،عَنْ عَمْرٍو،عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ)،قَالَ: «كَانَ قَوْمُ لُوطٍ مِنْ أَفْضَلِ قَوْمٍ خَلَقَهُمُ اللَّهُ، فَطَلَبَهُمْ إِبْلِيسُ الطَّلَبَ الشَّدِيدَ... ثُمَّ تَرَكُوا نِسَاءَهُمْ وَ أَقْبَلُوا عَلَى الْغِلْمَانِ... حَتَّى اسْتَغْنَى النِّسَاءُ بِالنِّسَاءِ... ثُمَّ قَالَ لُوطٌ... لَوْ أَنَّ لِي أَهْلَ بَيْتٍ يَمْنَعُونَنِي مِنْكُمْ».

Translation: And from him: from several of our companions, from Ahmad b. Muhammad b. Khalid, from Muhammad b. Sa‘id—he said: Zakariyya b. Muhammad informed me, from his father, from ‘Amr, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), who said: “The people of Lot were among the best of peoples whom God created. Iblis sought them with utmost effort. Among their good qualities and chosen traits was that when they went out to work they all went out together, leaving the women behind them. Iblis kept frequenting them. Whenever they returned, Iblis would ruin what they had made. Some said to others: ‘Come, let us lie in wait for the one who ruins our goods.’ They lay in wait and found a boy— the most handsome of boys. They said, ‘Are you the one who ruins our goods time after time?’ They agreed to kill him and lodged him for the night with a man. When night fell, the boy cried out. The man asked, ‘What is the matter with you?’ He said, ‘My father used to put me to sleep upon his belly.’ The man said, ‘Come, sleep upon my belly.’ The man continued to coax him until he taught him to commit the act on himself; first Iblis taught it, then that man taught it. He slipped away and escaped. In the morning the man began telling what he had done with the boy, marveling to them, and they did not recognize him. They laid their hands into it (the practice) until the men sufficed with one another. Then they lay in wait for passers-by and did the same to them, until people avoided their city. Then they abandoned their women and turned to boys. When [Iblis] saw he had established his matter among the men, he came to the women, taking the form of a woman, and said, ‘Your men do this with one another.’ They said, ‘Yes, we have seen that.’ Lot kept admonishing and enjoining them, while Iblis led them astray, until the women sufficed with women.

When the proof was complete against them, God sent Gabriel, Michael, and Israfil (peace be upon them) in the guise of youths wearing cloaks. They passed by Lot while he was ploughing. He said, ‘Where are you headed? I have not seen anyone more handsome than you!’ They said, ‘We are messengers of our Lord to the lord of this city.’ He said, ‘Has not your lord been informed of what the people of this city do? My sons, by God, they seize men and do with them until blood flows.’ They said, ‘Our Lord commanded us to pass through its midst.’ He said, ‘Then I have a request of you.’ They said, ‘What is it?’ He said, ‘Wait here until darkness mixes (with the evening).’ They sat. He sent his daughter: ‘Bring them bread, water in a water-skin, and a cloak to cover them from the cold.’

When the daughter went, rain came down in the valley. Lot said, ‘Now the valley will sweep away the children. Rise so we may go.’ Lot kept to the wall’s base, while Gabriel, Michael, and Israfil walked in the middle of the road. He said, ‘My sons, walk here.’ They said, ‘Our Lord commanded us to pass through its middle.’ Lot sought to make use of the darkness. Iblis passed by, took a child from a woman’s lap, and threw him into a well. The people of the city all cried out at Lot’s door. When they saw the youths in Lot’s house, they said, ‘O Lot, you have entered into our practice.’ He said, ‘These are my guests, so do not disgrace me regarding my guests.’ They said, ‘They are three; take one and give us two.’ He put them into a chamber and said, ‘If only I had family to defend me from you.’ They pushed at the door, broke Lot’s door, and threw Lot down. Gabriel said to him, ‘We are messengers of your Lord; they shall not reach you,’ and took a handful of gravel and struck their faces with it, saying, ‘Shahat al-wujuh (May the faces be disfigured),’ and all the people of the city went blind. Lot said to them (the angels), ‘O messengers of my Lord, what has my Lord commanded you concerning them?’ They said, ‘He has commanded us to seize them at daybreak.’ He said, ‘I have a request of you.’ They said, ‘What is your request?’ He said, ‘Seize them now, for I fear that my Lord may show forbearance toward them.’ They said, ‘O Lot, their appointed time is the morning; is not the morning near for one who wants to take?’ So take your daughters and go, and leave your wife.’”

Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) said: “May God have mercy on Lot; if he knew who was with him in the chamber, he would have known he was aided— when he said: ‘If only I had power against you, or could betake myself to a strong support.’ What support is stronger than Gabriel with him in the chamber! God, Mighty and Majestic, said to Muhammad (God bless him and his family): ‘And it is not far from the unjust’—from the wrongdoers of your community, if they do what the people of Lot did.” He said: “And the Messenger of God (God bless him and his family) said: ‘Whoever persists in intercourse with males will not die until he invites males to himself.’”

Translation: From him… from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) regarding Lot’s words: “These are my daughters; they are purer for you.” He said: “He offered them marriage.”
