Second – Declaring the Prophets Free from Sins

Second – Declaring the Prophets Free from Sins:

The viewpoint in the school of Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them) is the ʿiṣmah (infallibility) of all prophets (peace be upon them) from major and minor sins, both before prophethood and after it, and from error or mistake in conveying the message.

Whereas the ḥadīth scholars and anthropomorphists (ḥashwiyyah) permitted the occurrence of major sins by the prophets before prophethood, and some of them even allowed it during the period of prophethood—except for lying in matters related to conveying the divine law.【9】

Based on the belief in the infallibility of the prophets (peace be upon them), the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them) interpreted all the verses of the Qur'an that pertain to the lives of the prophets accordingly. This is a well-known approach adopted by the Ahl al-Bayt in their tafsīr of the Qur'an.

ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Jahm narrated: I was present in the assembly of al-Maʾmūn, and with him was al-Riḍā ʿAlī ibn Mūsā (peace be upon them both). Al-Maʾmūn said to him: “O son of the Messenger of Allah, is it not among your beliefs that the prophets are infallible (maʿṣūmūn)?” He said: “Indeed.”

He (al-Maʾmūn) said: “Then inform me about the saying of Allah, the Exalted: (وَلَقَدْ هَمَّتْ بِهِ وَهَمَّ بِها لَوْ لا أَنْ رَأى بُرْهانَ رَبِّهِ) [Yusuf 12:24]?” Al-Riḍā (peace be upon him) replied: “Indeed, she desired him, and had he not seen the proof of his Lord, he would have desired her — but he was infallible, and the infallible does not contemplate a sin nor commit it.”

Then again, from ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Jahm, he said: I was present in the assembly of al-Maʾmūn, and with him was ʿAlī ibn Mūsā al-Riḍā (peace be upon him). Al-Maʾmūn said to him: “O son of the Messenger of Allah, is it not among your beliefs that the prophets are infallible?” He replied: “Indeed.”

He said: Then he (al-Maʾmūn) questioned him about various verses of the Qur'an. Among what he asked was: “Tell me about the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, regarding Ibrāhīm: (فَلَمَّا جَنَّ عَلَيْهِ اللَّيْلُ رَأى كَوْكَباً قالَ هذا رَبِّي)“So when the night covered him over, he saw a star. He said: This is my Lord.” [6:76]

So al-Riḍā (peace be upon him) said: “Indeed, Ibrāhīm (peace be upon him) found himself among three groups of people — a group who worshipped Venus (al-Zuhrah), a group who worshipped the moon, and a group who worshipped the sun. This occurred after he had emerged from the cave in which he was hidden. So when night fell upon him and he saw Venus, he said: ‘This is my Lord’ — as a form of rejection and investigation, not as a statement of belief. Then when the star set, he said: ‘I do not love those that set.’ For setting is a quality of that which is created, not of the Eternal.

Then when he saw the moon rising, he said: ‘This is my Lord’ — again in rejection and investigation. But when it set, he said: ‘If my Lord does not guide me, I shall certainly be of the erring people.’ Then, when morning came and he saw the sun rising, he said: ‘This is my Lord, this is greater’ — again in rejection and investigation, not in confirmation or declaration. But when it set, he said to the three groups — the worshippers of Venus, the moon, and the sun — ‘O my people! Surely I am clear of what you associate (with Allah). Surely I have turned my face, being upright, wholly to Him Who originated the heavens and the earth, and I am not of the polytheists.’

What Ibrāhīm intended by these words was to show them the invalidity of their religion and to demonstrate that worship is not rightful for that which has the characteristics of Venus, the moon, or the sun — rather, worship is due to their Creator and the Creator of the heavens and the earth. And this argument he made to his people was something Allah inspired in him and granted to him, as Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, says: (وَتِلْكَ حُجَّتُنا آتَيْناها إِبْراهِيمَ عَلى قَوْمِهِ)“And this was Our argument which We gave to Ibrāhīm against his people.” [6:83]

So al-Maʾmūn said: “May Allah bless you, O son of the Messenger of Allah.”
