S 102 Ayat 1 to 8

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.

  1. Abundance diverts you,
  2. Until you come to the graves.
  3. Nay! you shall soon know,
  4. Again, Nay! you shall soon know.
  5. Nay! if you had known with a certain knowledge,
  6. You should most certainly have seen the hell;
  7. Then you shall most certainly see it with the eye of certainty;
  8. Then on that day you shall most certainly be questioned about the boons.

/11862 ʿAlī ibn Ibrāhīm, regarding the saying of the Exalted: “Abundance diverts you” — that is, your large numbers distracted you — “Until you come to the graves”, and you did not remember death. *Nay! You shall soon know * Then again, Nay! You shall soon know * Nay! If you had known with a certain knowledge * You should most certainly have seen the hell * Then you shall most certainly see it with the eye of certainty * Then on that day you shall most certainly be questioned about the boons [Qur’an 102:1–8] — That is, about the guardianship (al-wilāyah). And the evidence for this is His saying: “And stop them, for they must be questioned” [Qur’an 37:24].

I said to Abū ʿAbdillāh (peace be upon him) regarding the saying of the Mighty and Majestic: *“Nay! You shall soon know * Then again, Nay! You shall soon know” [Qur’an 102:3–4] — He said: “It means once in the rajʿah (return), and another time on the Day of Resurrection.”

99-/11865 Ibn al-Fārisī in Rawḍat al-Wāʿiẓīn, from Ibn ʿAbbās, said:

The Messenger of Allah (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) recited: “Abundance diverts you” [Qur’an 102:1], then said: “The seeking of abundance in wealth means gathering it without due right, withholding it from its rightful dues, and storing it up in containers — ‘Until you come to the graves’ [Qur’an 102:2], that is, until you enter your graves. Nay! You shall soon know, Nay! If you had known with a certain knowledge [Qur’an 102:3–5] — that is, if you had risen from your graves to your place of gathering. Nay! If you had known with a certain knowledge... — he said: and that is when the Ṣirāṭ (bridge) is brought forth and set up between the two edges of Jahannam. ‘Then on that day you shall most certainly be questioned about the boons’ [Qur’an 102:8] — He said: about five things: about fullness of the stomachs, cold drinks, the pleasure of sleep, the shade of dwellings, and the symmetry of one’s form.”

99-/11866 Then Ibn al-Fārisī said: And it has been narrated in our reports that al-naʿīm (the boon) is the guardianship of ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib (peace be upon him).

99-/11867 Shaykh (al-Ṭūsī) in al-Amālī, said: Abū ʿUmar ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn Mahdī narrated to us, who said: Abū al-ʿAbbās Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Saʿīd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿUqdah al-Ḥāfiẓ narrated to us, who said: Jaʿfar ibn ʿAlī ibn Najīḥ al-Kindī narrated to us, who said: Ḥasan ibn Ḥusayn narrated to us, who said: Abū Ḥafṣ al-Ṣāʾigh narrated to us — Abū al-ʿAbbās said: he is ʿUmar ibn Rāshid, Abū Sulaymān — from Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad (peace be upon them both), regarding the saying of Allah: “Then on that day you shall most certainly be questioned about the boons” [Qur’an 102:8], he said: “We are among the boons.”

And regarding His saying: “And hold fast by the covenant of Allah all together” [Qur’an 3:103], he said: “We are the covenant (ḥabl).”

99-/11868 ʿAlī ibn Ibrāhīm said: Aḥmad ibn Idrīs narrated to us, from Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad, from Salamah ibn ʿAṭāʾ, from Jamīl, from Abū ʿAbdillāh (peace be upon him), who said:

I asked about the saying of Allah: “Then on that day you shall most certainly be questioned about the boons” [Qur’an 102:8]. He said: “This ummah will be questioned about what Allah bestowed upon it through His Messenger [2] (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family), and then through his Household [3] (peace be upon them).”

[2] In the source: through His Messenger (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa ālih). [3] In the source: through his Household (ʿalayhim al-salām).

99-/11869 Muḥammad ibn Yaʿqūb, from a number of our companions, from Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Khālid, from ʿUthmān ibn ʿĪsā, from Abū Saʿīd, from Abū Ḥamzah, who said:

We were in the presence of Abū ʿAbdillāh (peace be upon him) as a group, and he called for food — the likes of which we had never experienced in terms of flavor and pleasantness. Then we were brought dates so pure and beautiful that we could see our reflections in them.

One man said: “Indeed, you will be questioned about this naʿīm (boon) which you are enjoying at the home of the son of the Messenger of Allah (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family).”

So Abū ʿAbdillāh (peace be upon him) said: “Indeed, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, is more noble and more exalted than to feed you food, allow you to enjoy it, and then question you about it. Rather, He will question you about what He has bestowed upon you through Muḥammad and the family of Muḥammad (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family).”

99-/11870 And from him, from a number of our companions, from Aḥmad ibn Abī ʿAbdillāh, from his father, from al-Qāsim ibn Muḥammad al-Jawharī, from al-Ḥārith ibn Ḥarīz, from Sadeer al-Ṣayrafī, from Abū Khālid al-Kābulī, who said:

I entered upon Abū Jaʿfar (peace be upon him), and he called for lunch. I ate with him a meal — I had never eaten anything tastier or more delicate than it [4]. When we finished eating, he said: “O Abā Khālid, how did you find your food?” — or he said, “our food?” I replied: “May I be your ransom! I have never eaten food tastier or cleaner than it. But [1] I remembered the verse in the Book of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: ‘Then on that day you shall most certainly be questioned about the boons’ [Qur’an 102:8].”

So Abū Jaʿfar (peace be upon him) said: “No — He will only question you about what you are upon from the truth.”

99-/11871 Ibn Bābawayh said: al-Ḥākim Abū ʿAlī al-Ḥusayn ibn Aḥmad al-Bayhaqī narrated to us, who said: Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā al-Ṣawlī narrated to us, who said: Abū Dhakwān al-Qāsim ibn Ismāʿīl narrated to us in Surr Man Ra’ā [2] in the year 285 AH. He said:

Ibrāhīm ibn al-ʿAbbās al-Ṣawlī al-Kātib narrated to me in Ahwāz in the year 227 AH. He said:

One day we were in the presence of ʿAlī ibn Mūsā al-Riḍā (peace be upon him), and he said: “There is no true naʿīm (boon) in this world.” So one of the jurists who was present said to him: “What about the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: ‘Then on that day you shall most certainly be questioned about the boons’ [Qur’an 102:8]? Is that not referring to cold water in this world?”

So al-Riḍā (peace be upon him) — and his voice rose — said: “That is how you have interpreted it, and you have made it into categories. A group of you said: it is cold water. Others said: it is good food. Others said: it is pleasant sleep.

Indeed, my father narrated to me, from his father, from Abū ʿAbdillāh (peace be upon him), that your statements were mentioned in his presence regarding the saying of Allah, the Exalted: ‘Then on that day you shall most certainly be questioned about the boons’ [Qur’an 102:8].

He (peace be upon him) became angry and said: ‘Indeed, Allah, the Exalted, does not question His servants about that which He has graciously given to them, nor does He reproach them for it. Reproach is detestable coming from created beings — so how can it be attributed to the Creator, the Mighty and Majestic, that which He Himself does not approve of for His creation [3]?!’”

Continuation of 99-/11871 “But the true naʿīm (boon) is our love — the People of the House — and our guardianship. Allah will question about it after (affirming) tawḥīd (Divine Unity) and prophethood. For if the servant fulfills that, it will lead him to the eternal bliss of Paradise that never ends.

Indeed, my father narrated this to me from his father, from Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī, from his father ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn, from his father al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿAlī, from his father (peace be upon them), that he said:

The Messenger of Allah (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) said: ‘O ʿAlī, the first thing the servant will be asked about after his death is the testimony that there is no god but Allah, and that Muḥammad is the Messenger of Allah, and that you are the guardian of the believers — by what Allah has appointed and I have appointed for you.

Whoever acknowledges that and holds it as belief will be led to the eternal bliss (naʿīm) that never fades.’”

Continuation of 99-/11871 Abū Dhakwān said to me — after narrating this ḥadīth to me on his own initiative, without being asked:

“I told it to you for several reasons: among them, your coming to me from Baṣrah; among them, that your uncle had passed it on to me; and among them, that I used to be preoccupied with language and poetry, and relied on nothing else. Then I saw the Prophet (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) in a dream, and the people were greeting him with salām, and he was returning their greetings.

So I greeted him, but he did not reply to me. I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, I am from your ummah!’ He said to me: ‘Indeed, but narrate to the people the ḥadīth about al-naʿīm — the one you heard from Ibrāhīm.’”

Al-Ṣawlī said: “This ḥadīth has indeed been narrated by people from the Prophet (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family), but it does not contain the mention of al-naʿīm, nor the verse or its interpretation. What they narrated is that the first thing a servant will be questioned about on the Day of Resurrection is the testimony (of faith), prophethood, and the guardianship of ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib (peace be upon him).”

I entered upon Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī (peace be upon him), and he presented me with food — I had never eaten anything more pleasant than it. He said to me: “O Abā Khālid, how did you find our food?” I said: “May I be your ransom — how excellent it is! But I remembered a verse from the Book of Allah, and it caused me distress.” He said: “And what is it?” I said: ‘Then on that day you shall most certainly be questioned about the boons’ [Qur’an 102:8]. He said: “By Allah, you will never be questioned about this food.”

Then he laughed until he smiled wide, and his molars became visible. Then he said: “Do you know what al-naʿīm is?” I said: “No.” He said: “We are al-naʿīm — the boon about which you shall be questioned.”

99-/11878 Shaykh al-Mufīd narrated through his chain of transmission to Muḥammad ibn al-Sā’ib al-Kalbī, who said: When al-Ṣādiq (peace be upon him) arrived in Iraq, he settled in al-Ḥīrah. Abū Ḥanīfah came to him and asked him several questions. Among the things he asked was: “May I be your ransom, what is al-amr bil-maʿrūf (enjoining what is right)?” He (peace be upon him) said: “O Abā Ḥanīfah, al-maʿrūf (the good) is what is recognized by the people of the heavens, and recognized by the people of the earth — and that is the Commander of the Faithful, ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib (peace be upon him).” He said: “May I be your ransom, then what is al-munkar (the wrong)?” He said: “The two who wronged him in his right, usurped his authority, and burdened the people upon his back.”

Continuation of 99-/11878 He (Abū Ḥanīfah) said: “Isn’t enjoining what is right that you see a man committing disobedience to Allah and you forbid him from it?” Abū ʿAbdillāh (peace be upon him) said: “That is not enjoining what is right or forbidding what is wrong. That is merely a good deed you have done ahead.”

Abū Ḥanīfah said: “Inform me — may I be your ransom — about the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: ‘Then on that day you shall most certainly be questioned about the boons’ [Qur’an 102:8].” He (peace be upon him) said: “What do you say it means, O Abā Ḥanīfah?” He said: “Security in one’s dwelling, health in the body, and available sustenance.”

He (peace be upon him) replied: “O Abā Ḥanīfah, if Allah were to make you stand and keep you standing on the Day of Resurrection until He questions you about every bite you ate and every sip you drank, your standing would indeed be long.” He said: “Then what is al-naʿīm, may I be your ransom?” He said: “Al-naʿīm — we are the ones through whom Allah rescued people from misguidance, gave them sight after blindness, and taught them after ignorance.”

He said: “May I be your ransom, then how is the Qur’an always fresh?” He said: “Because it was not made for one time to the exclusion of another, that the days should wear it out. And if it were so, the Qur’an would have perished before the world perished.”

[1] tukhliquhu al-ayyām – “the days would wear it out.”

99-/11879 Al-Ṭabrisī: al-‘Ayyāshī narrated through his chain of transmission — in a long ḥadīth — that Abū Ḥanīfah asked Abū ʿAbdillāh (peace be upon him) about this verse. So he said to him: “What is al-naʿīm (the boon), O Nuʿmān, according to you?” He replied: “Provision of food and cold water.” He said: “If Allah were to make you stand before Him on the Day of Resurrection to ask you about every bite you ate and every sip you drank, your standing before Him would surely be long.” He said: “Then what is al-naʿīm, may I be your ransom?” He said: “We, the People of the House — al-naʿīm is what Allah has bestowed upon His servants through us. Through us they united after having been divided. Through us, Allah brought their hearts together and made them brothers after they had been enemies. Through us, Allah guided them to Islam. And this is the boon that does not end.
