Taha Ayah 123-127

Translation (Qur’an 20:123-127, M. H. Shakir):

He said: Get forth you two therefrom, all (of you), one of you (is) enemy to another. But there will most certainly come to you guidance from Me, so whoever follows My guidance, he shall not go astray nor be unhappy. And whoever turns away from My reminder, his shall be a straitened life, and We will raise him on the day of resurrection blind. He shall say: My Lord! why hast Thou raised me blind and I was a seeing one indeed? He will say: Even so: Our communications came to you, but you neglected them; even thus shall you be forsaken this day. And thus do We recompense him who is extravagant and does not believe in the communications of his Lord; and certainly the chastisement of the hereafter is severer and more abiding.

He said: “The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) said: O people, follow the guidance of Allah and you will be guided and rightly directed; and it is my guidance, and my guidance is the guidance of ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him). So whoever follows his guidance during my lifetime and after my death has indeed followed my guidance; and whoever follows my guidance has indeed followed the guidance of Allah; and whoever follows the guidance of Allah shall neither go astray nor be unhappy. He, Mighty and Majestic, said: And whoever turns away from My reminder, his shall be a straitened life, and We will raise him on the day of resurrection blind; he shall say: My Lord! why hast Thou raised me blind and I was a seeing one indeed? The Shaykh in his Amali said: Abu ‘Abdillah Muhammad ibn al-Nu‘man (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated to us; he said: Abu al-Hasan ‘Ali ibn Muhammad ibn al-Hasan al-Katib informed me; he said: al-Hasan ibn ‘Ali al-Za‘farani informed me; he said: Abu Ishaq Ibrahim ibn Muhammad al-Thaqafi informed me; he said: ‘Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Uthman narrated to us; he said: ‘Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Abi Sa‘id narrated to us, from Fudayl ibn al-Ja‘d, from Abu Ishaq al-Hamdani, from the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him), from what he wrote to Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr to read to the people of Egypt, and among what he (peace be upon him) wrote: “O servant of Allah, what comes after death for the one who is not forgiven is more severe than death. The grave—so beware its constriction [1], its straitness, its darkness, and its loneliness. The grave says every day: I am the house of estrangement, I am the house of dust, I am the house of desolation, I am the house of worms and creeping creatures. And the grave is a meadow from the meadows of Paradise or a pit from the pits of Fire. Indeed, when the believing servant is buried, the earth says to him: Welcome and greetings! You were among those I loved to walk upon my back; when I am given charge of you, you will know how I treat you. Then it expands for him as far as the eye can see. And when the unbeliever is buried, the earth says to him: No welcome, no greeting! You were among the most hateful to walk upon my back; when I am given charge of you, you will know how I treat you. Then it presses him until his ribs meet. And the straitened life with which Allah warned His enemy is the punishment of the grave: He unleashes upon the unbeliever in his grave ninety-nine serpents [2] which bite his flesh, break his bones, and keep going back and forth upon him thus until the day he is resurrected. If one such serpent were to blow upon the earth, it would never grow crops again. Know—O servants of Allah—that your weak souls and your tender, delicate bodies that are satisfied with little are too weak for this. So if you can feel dread for your bodies and souls from that which you have no strength for and no patience with, then act with what Allah loves, and leave what Allah dislikes.”

Translation (Qur’an 20:128-131, M. H. Shakir):

Does it not point out to them how many of the generations We destroyed before them, in whose dwellings they go about? Most surely there are signs in this for those endowed with understanding. And had there not been a word already gone forth from your Lord and an appointed term, certainly it would have been necessary (that punishment should come). Bear then patiently what they say, and glorify the praise of your Lord before the rising of the sun and before its setting, and during hours of the night do also glorify (Him), and during parts of the day, that you may be well pleased. And do not stretch your eyes after that with which We have provided different classes of them (of) the splendor of this world's life, that We may thereby try them; and the sustenance (given) by your Lord is better and more abiding.
