Qur’an 10:3 (M. H. Shakir): Surely your Lord is Allah, Who created the heavens and the earth in six periods, and He is firm in power over the Throne.

99-/4839: Muhammad b. Ya‘qub, from Muhammad b. Yahya, from Ahmad b. Muhammad, from Ibn Mahbub, from ‘Abdullah b. Sinan, who said: I heard Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) say: “Indeed Allah created good on Sunday—and He would not create evil before good. On Sunday and Monday He created the earths; He created their sustenance on Tuesday; He created the heavens on Wednesday and Thursday; and He created their sustenance on Friday. And that is the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: ‘He created the heavens and the earth and what is between them in six periods’” (see Qur’an 25:59; 32:4, Shakir).

99-/4840: Al-‘Ayyashi, from Abu Ja‘far, from a man, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: “Allah created the heavens and the earth in six days, so the year is short by six days.”

99-/4841: From al-Sabbah b. Sayabah, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), who said: “Allah created the months as twelve months, which are three hundred and sixty days, and He withheld from them six days in which He created the heavens and the earth; hence the months became shorter.”

99-/4842: From Jabir, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), who said: The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) said: “Indeed Allah—mighty is His remembrance and holy are His names—created the earth before the heaven; then He established Himself over the Throne to administer the affairs.” And the meaning of “established” (istawa) will come, God willing, in Surat Ta Ha.

99-/4843: Ibn Babawayh said: Muhammad b. Musa b. al-Mutawakkil (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated to us, who said: Muhammad b. Abi ‘Abdillah al-Kufi narrated to us, from Musa b. ‘Imran al-Nakha‘i, from his uncle al-Husayn b. Yazid, from Isma‘il b. Muslim, from Abu Nu‘aym al-Balkhi, from Muqatil b. Hayyan, from ‘Abd al-Rahman b. Abi Dharr, from Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah have mercy on him), who said: I was holding the hand of the Prophet (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) as we walked together. We kept looking at the sun until it set. I said, “O Messenger of Allah, where does it set?” He said: “In the heaven; then it is raised from heaven to heaven until it is raised to the highest, the seventh heaven, until it is beneath the Throne, whereupon it falls in prostration; and the angels appointed over it prostrate with it. Then it says, ‘My Lord, from where do You command me to rise— from my east or from my west?’ That is His saying, Mighty and Majestic: ‘And the sun runs on to a term appointed for it; that is the ordinance of the Mighty, the Knowing’ (Qur’an 36:38, M. H. Shakir). Meaning thereby: the workmanship of the Mighty Lord in His dominion, the Knowing of His creation.” He said: “Then Gabriel (peace be upon him) comes to it with a garment of light from the Light of the Throne, in accordance with the hours of the day—according to its length in the days of summer, or its shortness in winter, or what is between that in autumn and spring. It then puts on that garment as one of you puts on his clothes; then it proceeds with it through the atmosphere of the heaven until it rises from its rising-place.”
