Yunus Ayah 94

Qur’an 10:93 (M. H. Shakir): And certainly We settled the children of Israel in a sure settlement, and We gave them of the goodly things, and they did not differ until the knowledge had come to them; surely your Lord will judge between them on the day of resurrection concerning that in which they differed.

99-/4967 _1- Ali ibn Ibrahim said: He returned them to Egypt, and He drowned Pharaoh.

Qur’an 10:94 (M. H. Shakir): But if you are in doubt as to what We have revealed to you, then ask those who read the Book before you; certainly the truth has come to you from your Lord, therefore you should not be of the disputers.

99-/4968 _2- Ali ibn Ibrahim said: My father narrated to me, from Amr ibn Sa‘īd al-Rāshidī, from Ibn Maskān, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: When the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) was taken on the Night Journey to the heaven, Allah revealed to him regarding Ali (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) what He revealed [1] of his dignity and his greatness with Allah. Then he was returned to the Frequented House (al-bayt al-ma‘mūr), and the prophets were gathered for him and they prayed behind him. Something arose in the soul of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) due to the magnitude of what Allah had revealed to him concerning Ali (peace be upon him). So Allah sent down: But if you are in doubt as to what We have revealed to you, then ask those who read the Book before you—meaning the prophets, for We have revealed in their Books of his excellence what We have revealed in your Book—Certainly the truth has come to you from your Lord, therefore you should not be of the disputers; and do not be among those who deny the signs of Allah, lest you be among the losers [2]. Al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: By Allah, he neither doubted nor asked.

99-/4969 _3- Ibn Bābawayh said: Al-Muzaffar ibn Ja‘far ibn al-Muzaffar al-‘Alawī (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated to us, who said: Ja‘far ibn Muhammad ibn Mas‘ūd narrated to us from his father, who said: Ali ibn ‘Abdillah narrated to us, from Bakr ibn Sālih, from Abu ’l-Khayr [3], from Muhammad ibn Hassān, from Muhammad ibn ‘Īsā, from Muhammad ibn Ismā‘īl al-Dārī, from Muhammad ibn Sa‘īd al-Idhkhirī—who used to accompany Musa ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Ali al-Ridā (peace be upon him)—that Musa informed him that Yahyā ibn Aktham wrote to him asking about questions, among them: Inform me about the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: But if you are in doubt as to what We have revealed to you, then ask those who read the Book before you—who is addressed by the verse?

If the one addressed by it is the Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family), did he not then doubt what Allah, Mighty and Majestic, revealed to him? And if the one addressed is other than him, then was the Qur’an revealed to someone other than him? Musa said: I asked my brother Ali ibn Muhammad (peace be upon them) about that, and he said: As for His saying: But if you are in doubt as to what We have revealed to you, then ask those who read the Book before you—the one addressed thereby is the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family), and he was not in doubt about what Allah, Mighty and Majestic, revealed. Rather, the ignorant said: “Why does He not send to us a prophet from among the angels? He has not distinguished him from others in being free of need of food and drink and walking in the markets.” So Allah, Mighty and Majestic, revealed to His Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family): Then ask those who read the Book before you, in the presence of the ignorant: “Has Allah sent any messenger before you except that he ate food and walked in the markets?” And you have in them an example to follow. He only said, If you are in doubt—yet he was not [1]—but to be fair with them; just as He said to him (may Allah bless him and his family): Then say: Come, let us call our sons and your sons and our women and your women and our near people and your near people, then let us be earnest in prayer, and invoke the curse of Allah on the liars [2]. Had He said, “Come, let us be earnest and invoke the curse of Allah upon you,” they would not have responded to the mutual imprecation. He already knew that His Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family) was delivering His message from Him and that he was not among the liars; and likewise He made the Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family) know that he was truthful in what he said, but He loved to be fair from himself.

He said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) said: When I was taken on the Night Journey to the fourth heaven, Jibrīl gave the adhān and the iqāmah, and the prophets, the truthful ones, the martyrs, and the angels were gathered. Then I went forward and led them in prayer. When I finished [3], Jibrīl said to me: “Say to them: In what do you bear witness?” They said: “We bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and that you are the Messenger of Allah, and that Ali is the Commander of the Faithful.”

99-/4974 _7- (Tafsīr al-Tha‘labī) and (Arba‘īn al-Khaṭīb), through their chains from al-Husayn ibn Muhammad al-Dīnawarī, through his chain from ‘Alqamah, from Ibn Mas‘ūd, from the Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family), who said: When I was taken up to the heaven, I reached with Jibrīl the fourth heaven, and I saw a house of red ruby. Jibrīl said: “This is the Frequented House; Allah, Exalted, created it fifty thousand years before the heavens and the earth.” Then he said: “Rise, O Muhammad, and pray.” Allah gathered the prophets, and I led them in prayer. When I had given the salām, an angel came to me from my Lord and said, “O Muhammad, your Lord conveys to you peace and says to you: Ask the messengers: upon what were they sent before you?” So I asked them, and they said: “Upon your guardianship and the guardianship of ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib.”

Qur’an 10:96-97 (M. H. Shakir): Surely those against whom the word of your Lord has proved true will not believe, though every sign should come to them, until they witness the painful chastisement.

99-/4975 _1- Ali ibn Ibrahim said: [They are] those who denied the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him). And His saying: the word of your Lord has proved true against them that they will not believe—he said: Wilayah was presented to them, and Allah had obligated them to have faith in it, but they did not believe in it.

Qur’an 10:98 (M. H. Shakir): Why was there not a town which believed so that their belief should have profited them but the people of Yunus? When they believed, We removed from them the chastisement of disgrace in this world and We gave them provision till a time.

99-/4976 _2- Muhammad ibn Ya‘qūb, from Muhammad ibn Yahyā, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad, from Ibn Mahbūb, from ‘Abdullah ibn Sinān, from Ma‘rūf ibn Kharrabūdh, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), who said: Indeed Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has winds of mercy and winds of punishment. If Allah wills to make punishment from the winds a mercy, He does so—he said—and He will never make mercy from the wind a punishment—he said—and that is because He has never shown mercy to a people who obeyed Him and then their obedience to Him became a burden against them, except after they had turned away from obeying Him [1]. He said: And thus He did with the people of Yunus: when they believed, Allah had mercy on them after He had already decreed and decided punishment upon them. Then He overtook them with His mercy and made the punishment decreed for them a mercy, so He turned it away from them after He had already sent it down upon them and it had encompassed them—and that was when they believed in Him and implored Him.

99-/4977 _3- Ibn Bābawayh said: ‘Ali ibn Ahmad ibn Muhammad (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated to us, who said: Muhammad ibn Abi ‘Abdillah al-Kūfī, from Musa ibn ‘Imrān al-Nakha‘ī, from his uncle al-Husayn ibn Yazīd al-Nawfalī, from ‘Ali ibn Sālim, from his father, from Abu Basīr, who said: I said to Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him): For what reason did Allah, Mighty and Majestic, turn away the punishment from the people of Yunus when it had already overshadowed them, while He did not…
