118. The Grace of Hazrat ʿAlī Aṣghar (a.s.) upon ʿAbbās Saqqā

Our esteemed friend, the capable speaker Āqā Muʿāvinīyān, narrated on the night of 14 Ṣafar 1428 AH at the home of Ḥājj Āqā-ye Argānī, that:

In Kāshān, there is a Husainiyyah where a special gathering (hayʾat) in the name of Hazrat ʿAlī Aṣghar (ʿa) is held. If you call out “ʿAlī Aṣghar” there, dozens will respond “Yes!” because many in that group, out of love and devotion to the Imām, have named their sons ʿAlī Aṣghar.

During the ʿĀshūrā commemorations, I was invited to speak there. I asked them, “Every city has its own traditions. What is yours, so I may follow it in my talk?” They replied, “Every night, do tawassul (intercession) with Hazrat ʿAlī Aṣghar.” I asked, “Really? How should I do it?” They said, “Seriously, just like that.”

Then someone was told, “Tell the story of your grandfather.” He said:

“I had a grandfather known as ‘ʿAbbās Saqqā’ (the water-carrier ʿAbbās). When my father was 20 years old, they both set out for pilgrimage to the holy shrines (ʿatabāt). Wherever people saw him, he would say: ‘If anyone wants to find me, they should come to the cloakroom (kafshdārī) near the grave of Ḥabīb.’ No one understood what he meant by that.

In Najaf, he fell severely ill and was unable to visit the shrine. He told my father: ‘Open the window and take me near it.’ When his eyes fell on the dome of Amīr al-Muʾminīn (ʿa), he said: ‘I have deep love for you, but I have a special pact with your son Imām Husain (ʿa).’

Then he said to my father: ‘Help me go to the shrine.’ My father supported him, and he performed the ziyārah and recovered. Afterward, they left for Karbalā.

After visiting the Master of Martyrs (ʿa), he returned to his lodging to rest. In the morning, they called him, but he didn’t respond — it became clear that he had passed away.

Some fellow pilgrims from Kāshān were found. They bathed, shrouded, and brought his body to the shrine. Near the entrance of the sacred courtyard, they laid the body down.

A dignified person arrived and asked, “Whose body is this?” They replied, “A pilgrim from Kāshān named ʿAbbās Saqqā.” He said, “I have a brotherhood pact with so-and-so, and he has a pact with this man. From this point forward, I am responsible for his burial arrangements.”

They took the body inside the shrine, performed the ritual circumambulation (ṭawāf), and the official of the shrine told them, “This body is like my brother. Bury him anywhere you like in the courtyard.”

They chose a spot and dug the grave. While half the body was still outside the grave, the official returned and said, “I’ve found a place for him inside the shrine, in the cloakroom near the grave of Ḥabīb.” So they removed the body and buried him there.

It then became clear that ʿAbbās Saqqā, through a vision or inspiration — either in dream or wakefulness — had known that he would be buried there. That’s why he always said:

“Whoever wants to find me, should come to the cloakroom near Ḥabīb’s grave.”
