He said: When a servant intends to recite, or to do a deed, and says: “In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful,” meaning: With this Name I perform this act, then every deed he does, which he begins with “In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful,” is blessed for him.

99-/267 _12- (Rabi‘ al-Abrār) by al-Zamakhsharī: He said: A man said to Ja‘far ibn Muhammad (peace be upon them both): What is the proof of Allah? And do not mention to me the world, accidents, and substances. He said to him: “Have you sailed the sea?” He said: Yes. He said: “Has the wind blown violently upon you to the point that you feared drowning?” He said: Yes. He said: [“Did your hope in the ship and the sailors cut off?” He said: Yes.] He said: “Did your soul then pursue the thought that there is Someone there who will save you?” He said: Yes. He said: “That is Allah, Glorified and Exalted. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: ‘…those whom you call upon besides Him have strayed (are lost)…’ [1] and: ‘And when distress afflicts you, to Him you cry aloud.’ [2]”
al-Isrā’ 17:67
M. H. Shakir: “And when distress afflicts you in the sea, away go those whom you call on except He; but when He brings you safe to the land, you turn aside; and man is ever ungrateful.”
al-Naḥl 16:53
M. H. Shakir: “And whatever favor is (bestowed) on you, it is from Allah; then when distress afflicts you, to Him do you cry for aid.”

H. Shakir)

99-/269 _2- The virtuous Shaykh ‘Alī ibn ‘Īsā in (Kashf al-Ghumma): from Imām al-Ṣādiq (peace be upon him), said: “My father lost a mule of his, and said: If Allah returns it to me, I will surely praise Him with praises that He approves. It was not long before it was brought to him with its saddle and bridle. When he mounted [it] and drew his garments together around himself, he raised his head to the sky and said: ‘Praise be to Allah,’ and did not add anything more. Then he said: I have omitted nothing and left nothing out; I have made all kinds of praise belong to Allah, Mighty and Majestic, so there is no praise except that it is included in what I said.” Then ‘Alī ibn ‘Īsā said: He spoke truthfully and well (peace be upon him), for the alif and lām in His saying “al-ḥamdu lillāh (the praise belongs to Allah)” encompasses the entire genus, and His Exaltedness is uniquely deserving of all praise.

I said to him: Is this the Dome of Adam? He said: “Yes. And Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has many domes. Indeed, behind your sunset (west) here are ninety-nine sunsets: a white land filled with creatures who are illumined by its light; they have not disobeyed Allah the blink of an eye; they do not know whether Allah created Adam or did not create him; yet they disavow so-and-so and so-and-so and so-and-so.” It was said to him: How is this? How do they disavow so-and-so and so-and-so and so-and-so while they do not know whether Allah created Adam or not? He said to the one who asked that: “Do you know Iblīs?” He said: No—except by report. He said: “Yet you were commanded to curse him and to disavow him?” He said: Yes. He said: “Thus were these (also) commanded.”

And beyond your moon there are forty discs; between one disc and the next is forty years (distance). 99-/281 _14- And from him: from Aḥmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Īsā, from al-Ḥusayn ibn Sa‘īd; and from Muhammad ibn ‘Īsā ibn ‘Ubayd, from al-Ḥusayn ibn Sa‘īd—both—from Faḍāla ibn Ayyūb, from al-Qāsim ibn Burayd, from Muhammad ibn Muslim, who said: I asked Abā ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him) about the inheritance of knowledge—what is its extent? Is it the compendium of this knowledge, or the explanation of everything of these matters that are discussed? He said: “Surely Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has two cities: a city in the east and a city in the west. In them are people who do not know Iblīs, nor do they know of the creation of Iblīs. We meet them regularly; they ask us about what they need; they ask us about supplication and we teach them; they ask us about our Qā’im—when he will appear. Among them is intense worship and striving. Their cities have gates—between one wing of a gate and the other is a hundred parasangs. They have glorification, magnification, supplication, and intense striving; were you to see them, you would belittle your own deeds. A man among them prays for a month without raising his head from his prostration. Their food is tasbīḥ; their garment is piety; their faces shine with light. When they see one of us, they surround him and gather around him, and they take from the trace of his footprint on the earth for blessing. When they pray, their murmur is more intense than the murmur of a raging wind. Among them is a group who have not set down their weapons since they have been; they await our Qā’im; they supplicate Allah, Mighty and Majestic, to show him to them; the lifespan of one of them is a thousand years. When you see them, you see humility and submissiveness and the seeking of what brings them near to Allah, Mighty and Majestic. If we are delayed from them, they think that to be due to displeasure. They keep track of our times in which we come to them; they neither grow weary nor slacken. They recite the Book of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, as we taught them. And among what we teach them is that which, were it recited to the people, they would disbelieve in it and deny it. They ask us about something when it occurs to them in the Qur’an which they do not recognize; when we inform them of it, their breasts expand at what they hear from us, and they ask for our continued survival and that they not be made to lose us. They know that the favor of Allah upon them in what we teach them is tremendous. They will have an expedition with the Imām when he rises, in which they will outpace the companions of arms; and they ask Allah, Mighty and Majestic, to make them among those by whom He gives victory to His religion. They are elders and youths. When a youth among them sees an elder, he sits before him as a servant, and does not get up until he orders him. They have a route to where the Imām (peace be upon him) intends that is better known to them than (it is to) the creation. When the Imām commands them with a matter, they stand up to it forever until he is the one who commands them otherwise. If they were to descend upon (all) creation between east and west, they would annihilate them in a single hour. Iron does not affect them. They have swords of an iron other than this iron; were one of them to strike a mountain with his sword, he would cleave it until he split it apart. In an hour the Imām (peace be upon him) crosses with them India, Daylam, Rome, the Berbers, Persia, and what lies between Jābars and Jābalq—two cities, one in the east and one in the west. They do not come upon people of any religion but that they invite them to Allah, Mighty and Majestic, to Islam, to the acknowledgment of Muhammad (Allah bless him and his Family), to tawḥīd, and to our walāyah, we the People of the House. Whoever among them responds and enters Islam, they leave him and appoint one of them as an amīr over them; and whoever does not respond, and does not acknowledge Muhammad (Allah bless him and his Family), and does not acknowledge Islam and does not submit, they kill him—until there remains no one between east and west and below the mountain except that he has believed.” [The remaining references and narrations continue in the same fashion:]

99-/301 _34- “I heard him countless times while I prayed behind him reciting: ‘Guide us on the straight path.’”
99-/302 _35- “‘Not those upon whom is wrath, nor those who go astray.’ He said: ‘They are the Jews and the Christians.’”
99-/303 _36- … «(غَيْرِ الْمَغْضُوبِ عَلَيْهِمْ وَ غَيْرِ الضَّالِّينَ) هَكَذَا نَزَلَتْ» … «الْمَغْضُوبِ عَلَيْهِمْ: فُلَانٌ وَ فُلَانٌ وَ فُلَانٌ وَ النُّصَّابُ، وَ الضَّالِّينَ: اَلشُّكَّاكُ الَّذِينَ لَا يَعْرِفُونَ الْإِمَامَ».
99-/303 _36- … “‘(Not those upon whom is wrath and not those who go astray)’—thus it was revealed.” … “‘Those upon whom is wrath’ are so-and-so and so-and-so and so-and-so and the nāṣibīs; and ‘those who go astray’ are the doubters who do not know the Imām.”
99-/304 _37- … «اِهْدِنَا الصِّرَاطَ الْمُسْتَقِيمَ». قَالَ: «قُولُوا… أَرْشِدْنَا إِلَى حُبِّ مُحَمَّدٍ وَ أَهْلِ بَيْتِهِ (عَلَيْهِمُ السَّلَامُ)».
99-/304 _37- … “‘Guide us on the straight path.’ He said: ‘Say, O servants: direct us to the love of Muhammad and his Household (peace be upon them).’”
99-/305 _38- … «اِهْدِنَا الصِّرَاطَ الْمُسْتَقِيمَ». قَالَ: «صِرَاطَ مُحَمَّدٍ وَ آلِهِ (عَلَيْهِمُ السَّلَامُ)».
99-/305 _38- … “‘Guide us on the straight path.’ He said: ‘The path of Muhammad and his Household (peace be upon them).’”
99-/306 _39- … “Allah commanded His servants to ask Him for the path of those upon whom He has bestowed favors—the truthful, the martyrs, and the righteous—and to seek refuge with Him from the path of those upon whom is wrath—the Jews, of whom Allah said: ‘Say: Shall I inform you of (him who is) worse than this in retribution with Allah? (Worse is he) whom Allah has cursed and brought His wrath upon, and of whom He made apes and swine’ [2]—and to seek refuge from the path of those who go astray—those of whom Allah said: ‘Say: O followers of the Book! Do not exceed the limits in your religion unjustly, and do not follow the low desires of a people who went astray before, and led many astray, and went astray from the right path’ [3]—and they are the Christians.” Then he said: “Everyone who disbelieves in Allah is one upon whom is wrath and astray from the path of Allah, Mighty and Majestic.” And al-Riḍā (peace be upon him) said likewise.
