S 103 Ayat 1 to 3

قوله تعالى:

بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ وَ الْعَصْرِ* إِنَّ الْإِنْسٰانَ لَفِي خُسْرٍ* إِلاَّ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَ عَمِلُوا الصّٰالِحٰاتِ وَ تَوٰاصَوْا بِالْحَقِّ وَ تَوٰاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ [1-3]

[1–3] In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. 1. By the time, 2. Surely man is in loss, 3. Except those who believe and do good, and enjoin on each other truth, and enjoin on each other patience. — Surah Al-‘Asr [103:1–3], M. H. Shakir

99-/11891 _1- ابْنُ بَابَوَيْهِ،قَالَ:حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ الْفَامِيُّ،وَ جَعْفَرُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مَسْرُورٍ،وَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ شَاذَوَيْهِ الْمُؤَذِّنُ(رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ)،قَالُوا:حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ جَامِعٍ الْحِمْيَرِيُّ،قَالَ:حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي،عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ أَبِي الْخَطَّابِ الزَّيَّاتِ،عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ،عَنِ الْمُفَضَّلِ بْنِ عُمَرَ،قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ الصَّادِقَ جَعْفَرَ بْنَ مُحَمَّدٍ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ)،عَنْ قَوْلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ: وَ الْعَصْرِ* إِنَّ الْإِنْسٰانَ لَفِي خُسْرٍ ،فَقَالَ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ):

«الْعَصْرُ:عَصْرُ خُرُوجِ الْقَائِمِ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ) إِنَّ الْإِنْسٰانَ لَفِي خُسْرٍ يَعْنِي أَعْدَاءَنَا، إِلاَّ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا [يَعْنِي] بِآيَاتِنَا وَ عَمِلُوا الصّٰالِحٰاتِ يَعْنِي بِمُوَاسَاةِ الْإِخْوَانِ وَ تَوٰاصَوْا بِالْحَقِّ يَعْنِي بِالْإِمَامَةِ وَ تَوٰاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ ،يَعْنِي فِي الْعُسْرَةِ [1]».

99-/11891 _1- Ibn Bābawayh said: Ahmad ibn Hārūn al-Fāmī, Ja‘far ibn Muhammad ibn Masrūr, and ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn ibn Shādhawayh al-Mu’adhdhin (may Allah be pleased with them) narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jaʿfar ibn Jāmiʿ al-Ḥimyarī narrated to us, saying: My father narrated to me, from Muhammad ibn al-Ḥusayn ibn Abī al-Khaṭṭāb al-Zayyāt, from Muhammad ibn Sinān, from al-Mufaḍḍal ibn ʿUmar. He said: I asked al-Ṣādiq Jaʿfar ibn Muhammad (peace be upon him) about the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: “By the time, surely man is in loss.” He (peace be upon him) said: “‘The time’ (al-ʿaṣr) refers to the time of the rise of al-Qāʾim (peace be upon him). ‘Surely man is in loss’ refers to our enemies, ‘except those who believe’ — meaning in Our signs — ‘and do good’ — meaning by supporting the brothers, ‘and enjoin on each other truth’ — meaning the Imamate, ‘and enjoin on each other patience’ — meaning in hardship.”

99-/11892 _2- مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْعَبَّاسِ،قَالَ:حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ سَلَمَةَ،عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْمُحَمَّدِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ إِسْمَاعِيلَ،عَنْ عِمْرَانَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْمَشْرِقَانِيِّ،عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ،عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ، عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ) ،فِي قَوْلِهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ: إِلاَّ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَ عَمِلُوا الصّٰالِحٰاتِ وَ تَوٰاصَوْا بِالْحَقِّ وَ تَوٰاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ ،قَالَ:«اسْتَثْنَى اللَّهُ سُبْحَانَهُ أَهْلَ صَفْوَتِهِ مِنْ خَلْقِهِ حَيْثُ قَالَ: إِنَّ الْإِنْسٰانَ لَفِي خُسْرٍ* إِلاَّ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا بِوَلاَيَةِ أَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ عَلِيٍّ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ) وَ عَمِلُوا الصّٰالِحٰاتِ أَيْ أَدَّوْا الْفَرَائِضَ وَ تَوٰاصَوْا بِالْحَقِّ أَيْ

بِالْوَلاَيَةِ وَ تَوٰاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ أَيْ وَصَّوْا ذَرَارِيَّهُمْ وَ مَنْ خَلَّفُوا مِنْ بَعْدِهِمْ بِهَا وَ بِالصَّبْرِ عَلَيْهَا».

99-/11892 _2- Muhammad ibn al-‘Abbās said: Muhammad ibn al-Qāsim ibn Salamah narrated to us, from Ja‘far ibn ‘Abd Allāh al-Muḥammadī, from Abū Ṣāliḥ al-Ḥasan ibn Ismā‘īl, from ‘Imrān ibn ‘Abd Allāh al-Mashriqānī, from ‘Abd Allāh ibn ‘Ubayd, from Muhammad ibn ‘Alī, from Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him), regarding the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: “Except those who believe and do good, and enjoin on each other truth, and enjoin on each other patience,” — he (peace be upon him) said: “Allah, the Exalted, excluded the people of His chosen ones among His creation when He said: ‘Surely man is in loss. Except those who believe’ — meaning, in the guardianship (wilāyah) of the Commander of the Faithful, ‘Alī (peace be upon him), ‘and do good’ — meaning, they fulfilled the obligations, ‘and enjoin on each other truth’ — meaning, with the guardianship (wilāyah), ‘and enjoin on each other patience’ — meaning, they enjoined their children and those they left behind after them with it (wilāyah) and with being patient upon it.”

99-/11893 _3- عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ،قَالَ:حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ،قَالَ:حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ زَكَرِيَّا،عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ حَسَّانَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ كَثِيرٍ،عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ) ،فِي قَوْلِهِ تَعَالَى: إِلاَّ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَ عَمِلُوا الصّٰالِحٰاتِ وَ تَوٰاصَوْا بِالْحَقِّ وَ تَوٰاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ ،فَقَالَ:«اسْتَثْنَى أَهْلَ صَفْوَتِهِ مِنْ خَلْقِهِ حَيْثُ قَالَ: إِنَّ الْإِنْسٰانَ لَفِي خُسْرٍ* إِلاَّ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا يَقُولُ:آمَنُوا بِوَلاَيَةِ أَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ): وَ تَوٰاصَوْا بِالْحَقِّ مَنْ بَعْدِهِمْ وَ ذَرَارِيَّهُمْ وَ مَنْ خَلَّفُوا،أَيْ بِالْوَلاَيَةِ وَ تَوٰاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ أَيْ وَصَّوْا أَهْلَهُمْ بِالْوَلاَيَةِ وَ تَوَاصَوْا بِهَا وَ صَبَرُوا عَلَيْهَا».

99-/11893 _3- ʿAlī ibn Ibrāhīm said: Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar narrated to us, he said: Yaḥyā ibn Zakarīyā narrated to us, from ʿAlī ibn Ḥassān, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Kathīr, from Abū ʿAbd Allāh (peace be upon him), regarding the saying of the Exalted: “Except those who believe and do good, and enjoin on each other truth, and enjoin on each other patience,” — he (peace be upon him) said: “He excluded the people of His chosen ones among His creation when He said: ‘Surely man is in loss. Except those who believe’ — meaning, those who believed in the guardianship (wilāyah) of the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him); ‘and enjoin on each other truth’ — meaning, they enjoined those who came after them, their descendants, and those they left behind with the guardianship (wilāyah); ‘and enjoin on each other patience’ — meaning, they instructed their families with the guardianship, enjoined one another with it, and remained patient upon it.”

/11894 _4-و قال عليّ بن إبراهيم أيضا: وَ الْعَصْرِ* إِنَّ الْإِنْسٰانَ لَفِي خُسْرٍ ،قال:هو قسم،و جوابه:إن الإنسان لخاسر.

وَ قَرَأَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ):(وَ الْعَصْرِ،إِنَّ الْإِنْسَانَ لَفِي خُسْرٍ،وَ إِنَّهُ فِيهِ إِلَى آخِرِ الدَّهْرِ،إِلاَّ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَ عَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ،وَ تَوَاصَوْا بِالْحَقِّ وَ تَوَاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ [1]وَ ائْتَمَرُوا بِالتَّقْوَى،وَ ائْتَمَرُوا بِالصَّبْرِ).

/11894 _4- And ʿAlī ibn Ibrāhīm also said: “By the time, surely man is in loss,” — he said: It is an oath, and its response is: “Indeed, man is in loss.”

And Abū ʿAbd Allāh (peace be upon him) recited: “By the time, surely man is in loss — and he remains in it until the end of time — except those who believe and do good, and enjoin on each other truth and enjoin on each other patience, and who advise one another to piety, and advise one another to patience.”
