Fountain of Blood

So many spears and arrows struck his body That his form blossomed like red flowers.

From the arrows of sorrow, the sky became like a spring cloud; A rain of blood bestowed water and color upon his garden.

At every moment his body turned toward one side, While the heavens relentlessly shot arrows at their target.

The bird of his soul sought a way to leave its cage, For the arrows of affliction had made its dwelling unbearably confined.

When fountains of blood overflowed from his body, The heavens cruelly gathered stones around him.

The face of Imam Husain (a.s.) became covered with dust and blood; The mirror of Divine Beauty was veiled with rust.

Those who recited the Qur'an drew swords against the embodiment of the Qur'an; Those who called themselves Muslims adopted a most astonishing way.

The enemy stood waiting, prepared for plunder, Hoping to seize an earring or a veil.

The sanctuary became filled with cries of “Wa Muhammada!” And the drum of war joined in lament with grief-stricken Zaynab (a.s.).
