99-/683_1- When they denied what they had recognized, Allah tested them with that and stripped from them the spirit of faith, and He placed within their bodies three spirits: the spirit of strength, the spirit of desire, and the spirit of the body. Then He associated them with the cattle, saying: “They are nothing but like cattle” [1], because a beast carries by the spirit of strength, feeds by the spirit of desire, and moves by the spirit of the body.

99-/684_2- ‘Ali b. Ibrahim said: My father narrated to me, from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr, from Hammad, from Hariz, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: “This verse was revealed about the Jews and the Christians. Allah, Blessed and Exalted, says: ‘Those to whom We have given the Book’ — meaning the Torah and the Gospel — ‘recognize him,’ meaning they recognize the Messenger of Allah as they recognize their sons, because Allah, Mighty and Majestic, sent down in the Torah, the Gospel, and the Psalms the description of Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family), the description of his companions, and his migration [2]. And His saying, the Exalted: ‘Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and those with him are severe against disbelievers, merciful among themselves; you see them bowing down, prostrating themselves, seeking grace from Allah and His pleasure; their marks are in their faces because of the effect of prostration; that is their description in the Torah and their description in the Gospel’ [3] — this is the description of Muhammad the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) in the Torah [and the Gospel] and the description of his companions. When Allah, Mighty and Majestic, sent him, the People of the Book recognized him, as He said, Glorious is His Majesty: ‘So when there came to them what they recognized, they disbelieved in it’ [4].”

Yunus, from Abu Khalid al-Kabuli, who said: Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) — in a narration in which he mentions the emergence of the Qai’m (peace be upon him) — said: “Then he will arrive at the Maqam, pray two rak‘ahs, and beseech Allah for His right.” Then Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) said: “By Allah, he is the distressed one (al-mudtarr) in His saying: ‘Or, Who answers the distressed one when he calls on Him and removes the evil, and He will make you successors in the earth?’ [1] The first to pledge allegiance to him will be Jibra’il, then the three hundred and thirteen men. Whoever has been tested by travelling will reach him, and whoever has not been tested by travelling will be missing from his bed. This is the saying of the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him): ‘They are those missing from their beds.’ And that is the saying of Allah: ‘So vie with one another in good works; wherever you are, Allah will bring you all together’ — and he said: ‘The good works (al-khayrat) are the guardianship (wilayah).’”

Abu Basir said: I asked: “May I be your ransom, will there be no believer on the earth that day other than them?” He said: “Indeed, but these are those through whom Allah brings forth the Qai’m. When you see the Turks crossing it, the Turks will advance until they camp in al-Jazirah [6], and the Romans will advance until they camp in al-Ramlah [7]. That will be a year of discord in every land of the Arabs.”
And the people of al-Sham will then differ under three banners: the red-haired [1], the piebald [2], and the Sufyani, along with Banu Dhanab al-Himar of Mudar; with the Sufyani are his maternal uncles from (the tribe of) Kalb. The Sufyani and those with him will prevail over Banu Dhanab al-Himar until they are killed in a manner never seen before. A man will appear in Damascus, and he and those with him will be killed in a manner never seen before; he is from Banu Dhanab al-Himar. This is the sign about which Allah, Blessed and Exalted, says: “But the parties differed among themselves; so woe to those who disbelieve because of presence on the great day.” [3]

The Sufyani and those with him will rise until he has no concern except the family of Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family) and their Shia. By Allah, he will dispatch a force to Kufah, and people from the Shia of the family of Muhammad in Kufah will be afflicted with killing and crucifixion. A banner will approach from Khurasan until it descends to the bank of the Tigris. A weak man from the mawali will go out with those who follow him, and he will be struck down on the outskirts of Kufah. He will send a force to Medina and a man will be killed there; the Mahdi and the Mansur will flee from it. The family of Muhammad, young and old, will be seized; none of them will be left without being imprisoned. The army will go out pursuing the two men.

The Mahdi (peace be upon him) will depart from it according to the way of Moses (peace be upon him), fearful and watchful, until he arrives in Mecca. The army will advance until, when they camp at al-Bayda’ [4] — which is the army of destruction [5] — the earth will swallow them, and none will escape except a news bearer. The Qai’m will stand between the Rukn and the Maqam, pray and then depart, and his minister will be with him. He will say: “O people, we seek the help of Allah against those who have wronged us and taken our right. Whoever argues with us concerning Allah — we are the ones most entitled to Allah. Whoever argues with us concerning Adam (peace be upon him) — we are the people most entitled to Adam. Whoever argues with us concerning Noah (peace be upon him) — we are the people most entitled to Noah. Whoever argues with us concerning Abraham (peace be upon him) — we are the people most entitled to Abraham. Whoever argues with us concerning Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family) — we are the people most entitled to Muhammad. Whoever argues with us concerning the prophets — we are the people most entitled to the prophets. Whoever argues with us concerning the Book of Allah — we are the people most entitled to the Book of Allah. We and every Muslim today bear witness that we have been wronged, expelled, aggressed upon, driven out from our homes, our property, and our families, and subjugated. Verily we seek the help of Allah today, and every Muslim.”
By Allah, there will come three hundred and some odd men, among them fifty women, gathering in Mecca without prior appointment, in scattered patches like the patches of the autumn clouds, each following the other. That is the verse which Allah said: “Wherever you are, Allah will bring you all together; surely Allah has power over all things.” A man from the family of Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family) will say: “Leave it, for it is a town whose people are wrongdoers.”
Then he will depart from Mecca, he and those with him — the three hundred and some odd — who will pledge allegiance to him between the Rukn and the Maqam; with him will be the covenant of the Prophet of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family), his banner, and his weapon, and his minister with him. A caller will call out in Mecca from the sky with his name and his command, until all the people of the earth hear it: “His name is the name of a prophet.” If this is unclear to you, then the covenant of the Prophet of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family), his banner, his weapon, and the Pure Soul (al-Nafs al-Zakiyyah) from the descendants of al-Husayn (peace be upon him) are not unclear to you. If this is unclear to you, the call from the sky with his name and his command will not be unclear to you. Beware the odd claimants from among the family of Muhammad, for the family of Muhammad and ‘Ali (peace be upon them) have one banner, and others have banners. Adhere to the ground, and do not follow any man from them ever until you see a man from the descendants of al-Husayn (peace be upon him) with the covenant of the Prophet of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family), his banner, and his weapon. The covenant of the Prophet of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) came to ‘Ali b. al-Husayn (peace be upon them), then it came to Muhammad b. ‘Ali (peace be upon them), and Allah does what He wills. So adhere to these always, and beware of those I have mentioned to you.
When a man from among them goes out with three hundred and some odd men, and with him is the banner of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family), heading toward Medina, until he passes through al-Bayda’ and says: “This is the place of the people who will be swallowed up.” It is the verse that Allah said: “Are they then secure who plan evil (deeds) that Allah will not cause the earth to swallow them or that the punishment will not come upon them from whence they do not perceive? Or that He may not seize them in their going to and fro so that there shall be no escape for them?” [2]

When he reaches Medina he will bring out Muhammad b. al-Shajari according to the way of Joseph (peace be upon him). Then he will come to Kufah and remain there as long as Allah wills him to remain, until he prevails over it. Then he will move until he reaches al-‘Adhra’ [3], he and those with him, and many people will have joined him. The Sufyani will be that day in the Valley of al-Ramlah. When they meet — it is the Day of the Abdāl — people who were with the Sufyani yet are from the Shia of the family of Muhammad will come out (to the Imam), and people who were with the family of Muhammad will go over to the Sufyani, becoming from his Shia until they join them; and every group will go to its banner — this is the Day of the Abdāl.
Amir al-Mu’minin (peace be upon him) said: “The Sufyani and those with him will be killed that day until none remains to tell the tale. The deprived on that day is he who misses the spoils of Banu Kalb. Then he will proceed to Kufah, and his residence will be there. He will not leave any Muslim slave without purchasing and freeing him, nor any debtor without paying his debt, nor any injustice to anyone without restoring it. If a slave is killed by his followers, he will pay his price as blood-money to his family [4]. If anyone is slain, he will settle his debts and enroll his dependents in the stipend, until he fills the earth with equity and justice as it had been filled with injustice, oppression, and aggression.”
He and his household will reside in al-Rahbah [5]. Al-Rahbah was the dwelling of Noah (peace be upon him); it is a good land. No man from the family of Muhammad (peace be upon them) dwells or is slain except in a pure and blessed land; they are the pure legatees.

99-/695 _11- From Abu Sumaynah, from a servant of Abu al-Hasan (peace be upon him), who said: I asked Abu al-Hasan (peace be upon him) about His saying: “Wherever you are, Allah will bring you all together.” He said: “By Allah, that is that when our Qai’m arises, Allah will gather to him our Shia from all the lands.”
99-/696 _12- From al-Mufaddal b. ‘Umar, who said: Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) said: “When the Imam is given permission, he will call upon Allah by His Greatest Hebrew Name, and his companions — three hundred and thirteen — will be selected for him, in scattered patches like the patches of the autumn clouds; they are the people of guardianship (wilayah). Among them is one who is missed from his bed by night and finds himself by morning in Mecca; among them is one who is seen travelling in the clouds by day, known by his name, his father’s name, his lineage and descent.” I said: “May I be your ransom, which of them has greater faith?” He said: “The one who travels in the clouds by day. They are the missing ones, and regarding them this verse was revealed: ‘Wherever you are, Allah will bring you all together.’”

99-/697 _13- Shaykh al-Mufid in (al-Ikhtisas), from ‘Amr b. Abi al-Miqdam, from Jabir al-Ju‘fi, who said: Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) said to me: “O Jabir, adhere to the ground, and do not move a hand or a foot until you see signs I will mention to you, if you live to see them: the first of them is the dispute among the sons of so-and-so — and I do not think you will live to see it, but relate it after me — and a caller will call from the sky; a voice will come to you from the direction of Damascus announcing victory; a village from the villages of Sham called al-Jabiyah [2] will be swallowed; and a section of the right side of the mosque of Damascus will collapse. A renegade group will emerge from the direction of the Turks, followed by one from the direction of [3] the Romans. The Turks’ brethren will advance until they camp in al-Jazirah, and the Romans’ renegades will advance until they camp in al-Ramlah.
“That year — O Jabir — there will be great discord in every land to the west; the first western land to be ruined will be al-Sham. They will then differ under three banners: the banner of the red-haired, the banner of the piebald, and the banner of the Sufyani. The Sufyani will meet the piebald and they will fight, and he will kill him and those with him; the red-haired will be killed. Then his only concern will be to head toward Iraq. His army will pass through Qirqisiya [4] and they will kill there one hundred thousand men from among the tyrants.
“The Sufyani will send an army to Kufah, seventy thousand strong; they will inflict upon the people of Kufah killing, crucifixion, and captivity. While they are thus, banners will come from the direction of Khurasan, traversing the stages swiftly, and with them are some of the companions of the Qai’m (peace be upon him). A man from the mawali of the people of Kufah will go out, and the commander of the Sufyani’s army will kill him between al-Hirah and Kufah.
He will send a detachment to Medina, and the Mahdi will flee [1] from it to Mecca. The commander of the Sufyani’s army will learn that the Mahdi has left Medina; he will send an army in pursuit, but they will not catch him until he enters Mecca, fearful and watchful, following the way of Moses b. ‘Imran (peace be upon him). The commander of the Sufyani’s army will camp at al-Bayda’; a caller will call from the sky: “O Bayda’, annihilate the people!” The earth will swallow them, and none will escape except three; Allah will turn their faces to their backs, and they are from (the tribe of) Kalb. About them was revealed this verse: “O you who have been given the Book, believe in what We have revealed, verifying what you have, before We change faces then turn them on their backs...” [2]

And, God willing, this narration will come with a full chain via Muhammad b. Ibrahim al-Nu‘mani, regarding His saying, Exalted is He: “O you who have been given the Book, believe in what We have revealed, verifying what you have...” [1] from Surat al-Nisa’.
99-/698 _14- Al-Tabrisi in (al-Ihtijaj), from ‘Abd al-‘Azim al-Hasani (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I said to Muhammad b. ‘Ali b. Musa (peace be upon him): “I hope that you are the Qai’m from the household of Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family) who will fill the earth with equity and justice as it has been filled with injustice and oppression?” He (peace be upon him) said: “None of us is but one who stands by Allah’s command [and guides to the religion of Allah]; however, the Qai’m by whom Allah will purify the earth of unbelief and denial and fill it with equity and justice is he whose birth will be hidden from the people, whose person will be concealed from them, and whose naming will be forbidden for them. He is the namesake and kunya-mate of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family). The earth will be folded up for him, and every difficulty will be humbled before him. There will gather to him from his companions the number of the people of Badr — three hundred and thirteen men — from the farthest reaches of the earth. That is Allah’s saying: ‘Wherever you are, Allah will bring you all together; surely Allah has power over all things.’ When this number from the people of the earth [2] has gathered for him, Allah will manifest his affair. When his count is completed — which is ten thousand men — he will go forth by Allah’s permission, and he will continue to slay Allah’s enemies until Allah, Mighty and Majestic, is pleased.”
‘Abd al-‘Azim said: [So I asked him:] “My master, how will he know that Allah has become pleased?” He said: “He will cast mercy into his heart. When he enters Medina, he will bring out al-Lat and al-‘Uzza and burn them.”
And there will come — God willing — a narration agreeing with what is here regarding the meaning of the verse, in His saying, Exalted is He: “And could you see when they shall become terrified, but then there shall be no escape and they shall be seized from a near place,” from Surat Saba’, a narration from al-Baqir (peace be upon him) [3].
Quran reference and translation:
Saba’ 34:51
M. H. Shakir: “And could you see when they shall become terrified, but then there shall be no escape and they shall be seized from a near place.”
M. H. Shakir: “And from whatsoever place you come forth, turn your face towards the Sacred Mosque; and wherever you are, turn your faces towards it, so that people shall have no argument against you, except those of them that are unjust; so do not fear them, and fear Me, and so that I may complete My favor on you and that you may walk on the right course.”
99-/699 _1- ‘Ali b. Ibrahim: It means: “and not those among them who did wrong,” and (illa) here is in the place of (wa-la) [4] and is not an exception.
