On the Special Effects of Weeping with Respect to Reward and Recompense

On the Special Effects of Weeping with Respect to Reward and Recompense

The Ninth Objective: On the special effects of weeping from the perspective of reward and recompense, and these are of several kinds:

First: Those that relate to salvation from terrors and punishment. The details of this are in several stages.

One is at the time when the soul departs. This is a great and difficult passage, containing intense fear and tremendous hardship.

Amīr al-Muʾminīn (peace be upon him) used to say:

“There are hardships in death that cannot be described, and cannot be imagined by the minds of the people of this world.” [734]

[Page 260]

Weeping for Sayyid al-Shuhadāʾ (peace be upon him) is a means of salvation from this.

As Imām al-Ṣādiq (peace be upon him) said to Mismaʿ ibn ʿAbd al-Malik:

“You are from Iraq. Do you visit al-Ḥusayn (peace be upon him)?”

He replied:

“No. I have Nāṣibī enemies, and I fear they may inform the governor and he may punish me. Therefore, out of taqiyyah, I have refrained from visiting.”

The Imam said:

“Do you remember his sufferings and grieve over them?”

He replied:

“Yes, by Allah. I weep, the effects of sorrow appear upon me, and I lose my desire for food.”

The Imam said:

“Know that at the time of your death you will see my forefathers, and they will instruct the Angel of Death concerning you in a manner that will delight your eyes.” [735]

Second: Seeing the Angel of Death.

This is a tremendous terror and is extremely frightening and dreadful for the people of sin.

However, weeping for al-Ḥusayn (peace be upon him) is a means of salvation from it.

For Imām al-Ṣādiq (peace be upon him) said to Mismaʿ after the previous statement:

“The Angel of Death will be more compassionate toward you than a mother.” [736]

It is obvious that seeing a loving mother brings no fear or terror.

Third: Entering the grave is a great affliction and a frightening and terrifying stage.

For this reason, it is recommended in Islamic law that the deceased be lowered toward the grave in three stages so that he may become prepared for it. [737]

Weeping for Imām al-Ḥusayn (peace be upon him) is a means of salvation from this as well.

Many narrations state that if someone brings joy to the heart of a believer, Allah creates from that joy a beautiful being who enters the grave before the deceased, receives him, and says:

“Glad tidings to you, O friend of Allah, of Divine honor and His pleasure. Be secure, for I shall be your companion until the Day of Judgment.” [738]

Therefore, when someone brings joy to the heart of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family), the Imams of guidance, and Fāṭimah al-Zahrāʾ (peace be upon her) by weeping for al-Ḥusayn (peace be upon him)—as they themselves have said that this act is kindness toward them, maintaining ties with them, and supporting them—then how magnificent will be the form created from their joy, and how beautiful will that everlasting companion be. [739]

[Page 261]

Fourth: Remaining in the grave and in Barzakh is a painful suffering and a tremendous trial.

As Amīr al-Muʾminīn (peace be upon him), speaking on their behalf, says:

“They continually cry out: ‘The narrowness of our dwelling has overwhelmed us. The dust has been poured upon our heads. Our faces have changed. Our freshness and beauty have been taken away. Our loneliness has become prolonged.’” [740]

Weeping for al-Ḥusayn (peace be upon him) is beneficial in this stage, because it has been narrated regarding the one who weeps that at the time of his death he will become so joyful that this happiness will remain in his heart until the Day of Judgment. [741]

Fifth: Coming out of the grave is a tremendous calamity and a great affliction.

Imam al-Sajjad (peace be upon him) used to weep when remembering it and would say:

“I weep for the time when I will come out of my grave with my body uncovered, carrying the burden of my sins upon my shoulders, looking sometimes to the right and sometimes to the left, while every person on that day will be occupied with his own affair; some will be smiling and joyful, while others will be weeping and burdened with distress.” [742]

Weeping for al-Imam Husain (a.s.) is a means of covering one's nakedness and lightening one's burden.

It has been narrated regarding the weeper (baaki) that when he rises from the grave, joy will be visible upon his face, and the angels will come to receive him and give him glad tidings of Divine reward. [743]

Sixth: The earthquake of the Day of Judgment is a tremendous matter and a great catastrophe.

It has many states, stages, and stations, and its hardships are numerous. According to its various conditions, it is known by many names, such as: Qiyamah, Ghāshiyah, Sāʿah, Zalzalah, Hāqqah, Qāriʿah, Yawm al-Faṣl, Yawm al-Dīn, Yawm al-ʿArḍ al-Akbar, Yawm al-Fazaʿ al-Akbar, Yawm al-Ḥisāb, Ṭāmmah Kubrā, Ṣākhkhah, Wāqiʿah, Yawm al-Firār, Yawm al-Bukāʾ, Yawm al-Tanād, Yawm al-Taghābun, Yawm al-Āzifah, Yawm Yakūn al-Nāsu Kal-Farāsh al-Mabthūth, and Yawm Lā Yasʾalu Ḥamīmun Ḥamīmā.

Deliverance at each of these stations requires deeds, virtues, spiritual states, noble character, difficult struggles, sacrifice of life and wealth, night worship, abundant acts of devotion, abandoning comfort, and detachment from the world.

However, weeping for Sayyid al-Shuhadāʾ (as) makes all of these stations easy.

For the Messenger of Allah (sawa) said to Lady Fatimah (sa), after she asked her noble father:

“Who will hold mourning gatherings for my son al-Imam Husain (a.s.)?”

He replied:

“A group from the righteous of my community.”

Then he said:

“And when the Day of Judgment comes, I shall take the hands of those who wept and enter them into Paradise.” [744]

Surely, whoever's hand is in the hand of the Messenger of Allah is safe from the Qāriʿah, the Ṭāmmah, the Ṣākhkhah, weeping, sorrow, fear, loss, and confusion.

Seventh: The time when the record of deeds is read and the reckoning takes place is extremely difficult.

Amir al-Muʾminin (as) would weep when imagining it. At night he would go out into the desert and lament, saying:

“Ah! For the time when a sinful deed will be read out which I myself have forgotten, but You have recorded. Then You will command: ‘Seize him!’ Woe to the one who is seized, for neither his family nor his tribe will benefit him or save him.”

Then he would writhe like one bitten by a snake, fall unconscious, and become like a dry piece of wood. [745]

Weeping for al-Imam Husain (a.s.) (as) is beneficial at this stage, because it has been narrated that such people will be under the shade of the Throne and in the service of al-Imam Husain (a.s.) (as), while the rest of the people are occupied with their reckoning. [746]

Eighth: Crossing the Bridge of Ṣirāṭ is filled with tremendous terror. It must certainly occur and is among the definite realities, according to the explicit text of the Qur'an. [747]

People will cross it in different ways. Some will pass over it like lightning, [263] while others will cross with difficulty but will remain safe. [748] A group will fall into the Fire while crossing, like moths falling into a flame.

At that time, the Messenger of Allah (sawa) will be standing there saying:

«Allahumma sallim sallim» “O Allah, grant safety, grant safety.” [749]

However, he will take the hands of those who wept for al-Imam Husain (a.s.) (as), lead them across, and save them from its difficult stages, as has been narrated in reliable traditions. [750]

Ninth: Being seized and taken toward Hell is among the greatest terrors and most severe conditions. This is the “Great Terror” (al-Faza'a al-Akbar), and weeping for al-Imam Husain (a.s.) repels it. [751]

Tenth: Entering Hell is among the greatest calamities and most severe punishments, something that neither the heavens nor the earth can bear.

Weeping for the Martyred Imam saves one from it. It has been narrated that a single tear-drop extinguishes the heat of Hell. [752]

This may be an indication that if a weeper deserves to enter Hell, he will ultimately be brought out from it.

Second Type: Concerning the expiation of sins.

Many narrations state that a single tear-drop becomes an expiation for all sins, even if they are as numerous as the stars or the foam of the seas. [753]

Third Type: Concerning the attainment of blessed spiritual states.

What state could be better than receiving the supplication of the Messenger of Allah, the Imams of Guidance, and Lady Fatimah al-Zahra (sa), due to the request of Sayyid al-Shuhadaʾ (as) on one's behalf?

This state is attained through weeping for him. [754]

Fourth Type: Concerning the attainment of reward.

It is narrated that the reward for every tear-drop is that the person will have a dwelling in Paradise forever. [755]

Fifth Type: Concerning the elevation of ranks.

There is no rank in Paradise higher than the rank of the Seal of the Prophets and the Imams of Guidance.

It is narrated that the one who weeps will be with them in their rank. [756]
