Yusuf Ayah 35-56

Then it appeared to them after they had seen the signs—to the saying of the Most High—“he could dwell therein wherever he pleased.” [Yusuf 35–56; Shakir: “Then it occurred to them after they had seen the signs that they should imprison him till a time. … And thus did We give to Yusuf power in the land—he had mastery in it wherever he pleased; We send Our mercy on whom We please, and We do not waste the reward of those who do good.”]

99-/5270 _1-

[Quranic verse reference and translation:]

[Shakir:] “Then it occurred to them after they had seen the signs that they should imprison him till a time.”

99-/5270 - English:

Then ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim said: And in the narration of Abu al-Jarud from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) regarding His saying: “Then it occurred to them, after they had seen the signs, that they should surely imprison him for a time”: “The signs were: the testimony of the child, the shirt torn from behind, and their racing to the door until her tugging at him was heard at the door. When he disobeyed her, she kept pressing her husband until he imprisoned him. Two youths entered the prison with him—meaning two slaves of the king: one a baker, the other in charge of the drink. The one who lied and had not seen the dream was the baker.”

[Quranic references and translations:]

[Shakir:] “I saw myself pressing wine.”

[Shakir:] “I saw myself carrying bread above my head, and the birds were eating from it.”

[Shakir:] “O my two mates of the prison! as for one of you, he shall give his lord drink of wine; and as for the other, he shall be crucified, and the birds shall eat from his head. The matter about which you inquired has been decreed.”

[Shakir:] “Remember me with your lord.”

[Shakir:] “But the Shaitan caused him to forget mentioning it to his lord.”

99-/5271 - English:

He returned to the report of ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim. He said: The king put two men in charge of guarding Yusuf. When they entered the prison, they said to him, “What is your craft?” He said, “I interpret dreams.” One of the two wardens then saw in his sleep—as God, Mighty and Majestic, said: “I press wine.” Yusuf said, “You will be released; you will again serve the king his drink, and your rank with him will be elevated.” And the other said, “I see myself carrying bread on my head, and the birds are eating from it,” though he had not seen that. Yusuf said to him, “You—the king will kill you and crucify you, and the birds will eat from your head.” The man laughed and said, “I did not see that.” Yusuf said, as God Most High related: “O my two prison-companions, as for one of you, he will give his lord wine to drink; and as for the other, he will be crucified, and the birds will eat from his head. The matter you sought a ruling about has been decided.”

Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), regarding “Indeed we see you to be of the doers of good” [Yusuf 36; Shakir: “Surely we see you to be of the doers of good”], said: “He would tend to the sick, seek out the needy, and make things easy for the imprisoned.” When the one who had seen himself pressing wine wanted to leave prison, Yusuf said to him: “Mention me to your lord,” and it was as God, Mighty and Majestic, said: “But Satan caused him to forget the remembrance of his lord.”

99-/5272 - English:

Then ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim said: Al-Hasan ibn ‘Ali narrated to us, from his father, from Isma‘il ibn ‘Umar, from Shu‘ayb al-‘Aqarqufi, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: “Gabriel came to Yusuf and said to him: O Yusuf, the Lord of the worlds conveys His greetings to you and says to you: Who made you among the fairest of His creation? He cried out, placed his cheek on the ground, and said: You, my Lord. Then he said to him: And He says to you: Who made your father love you over your brothers? He cried out, placed his cheek on the ground, and said: You, my Lord. He said: And He says to you: Who brought you out of the well after you had been thrown into it and had become certain of perishing? He cried out, placed his cheek on the ground, and said: You, my Lord. He said: Verily your Lord has assigned you a punishment for seeking help from other than Him, so he remained in prison for some years.”

He said: “When the term ended and God permitted him to supplicate for relief, he placed his cheek on the ground and said: O Allah, if my sins have worn away my face before You, I turn to You by the faces of my righteous forefathers: Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, and Jacob. So God relieved him.”

I said: May I be ransomed for you, shall we supplicate with this supplication? He said: “Supplicate with its like: O Allah, if my sins have worn away my face before You, I turn to You by Your Prophet, the Prophet of mercy, Muhammad (may God bless him and his family), and ‘Ali, Fatimah, al-Hasan, al-Husayn, and the Imams (peace be upon them).”

[Shakir:] “Seven fat cows which seven lean ones ate; and seven green ears and (seven) others dry.”

[Shakir:] “O chiefs! explain to me my dream, if you can interpret the dream.”

[Shakir:] “And of the two (prisoners) he who was deemed to be saved remembered after a long time and said: I will inform you of its interpretation, so let me go.”

[Shakir:] “O Yusuf! O truthful one! explain to us the seven fat cows which seven lean ones ate, and the seven green ears and (seven) others dry.”

[Shakir:] “You shall sow for seven years continuously, then what you reap leave it in its ear except a little of which you eat. Then there shall come after that seven hard (years), which shall eat away all that you have beforehand laid by in advance for them—except a little which you shall preserve. Then there shall come after that a year in which people shall have rain and in which they shall press (grapes).”

[Shakir:] “And We send down from the clouds water pouring forth abundantly.”

99-/5273 - English:

And ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim said: Then the king saw a dream and said to his ministers: I saw in my sleep seven fat cows being eaten by seven lean ones—meaning emaciated ones—and I saw seven green ears of grain and others dry. Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) recited: “sab‘a sanābila.” Then he said: “O chiefs, give me a ruling concerning my dream if you can interpret dreams.” They did not know its interpretation. The one who used to serve at the king’s head remembered his dream and remembered Yusuf after seven years—His saying: “And the one who was saved of the two remembered after a time: I will inform you of its interpretation, so send me forth.” He came to Yusuf and said: “O truthful one, give us a ruling concerning seven fat cows that seven lean ones ate, and seven green ears and others dry.” Yusuf said: “You will sow for seven years constantly; what you harvest, leave it in its ear except a little which you eat”—that is, do not thresh it, for it spoils over the length of seven years, and if it remains in its ear it does not spoil—“then there will come after that seven severe (years) that will consume what you have laid up for them”—i.e., seven years of severe famine consuming what you stored during the past seven years. Al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: “It was revealed as: ‘what you have brought near (qar- rabtum) for them.’ Then after that there will come a year in which the people will be relieved and in which they will be rained upon.” Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) said: A man recited before the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him): “Then will come after that a year in which the people are relieved and in which they ‘ya‘ṣirūn’”—reading it as an active (they press). He said: “Woe to you! What do they press—wine?!” The man said: “O Commander of the Faithful, how shall I recite it?” He said: “It was only revealed as: ‘and in it yu‘ṣarūn’—meaning: they are rained upon—after the years of famine; and the proof is His saying: ‘And We sent down from the mu‘ṣirāt (rain-clouds) water pouring forth.’”

99-/5274 - English:

Al-Tabrisi in the Book al-Nubuwwah, with his chain from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa, from al-Husayn ibn ‘Ali ibn bint Ilyas, said: I heard al-Rida (peace be upon him) say: “Yusuf (peace be upon him) set himself to gathering food; he gathered during the seven fertile years and stored it up in the storehouses. When those years ended and the barren years came, Yusuf began selling the food. He sold to them in the first year for dirhams and dinars until there was not left in Egypt and its environs any dinar or dirham except that it came under the ownership of Yusuf. He sold to them in the second year for ornaments and jewels until there was not left in Egypt and its environs any ornament or jewels except that it became his. He sold to them in the third year for beasts of burden and livestock until there was not left in Egypt and its environs any beast or livestock except that it became his. He sold to them in the fourth year for male and female slaves until there was not left in Egypt and its environs a male or female slave except that it became his. He sold to them in the fifth year for houses and landed property until there was not left in Egypt and its environs any house or property except that it became his. He sold to them in the sixth year for farmlands and rivers until there was not left in Egypt and its environs any river or farm except that it became his. He sold to them in the seventh year for their very persons until there was not left in Egypt and its environs any slave or any free person except that he became a slave to Yusuf. Thus he possessed their freeborn and their slaves, and their wealth. The people said: We have never seen nor heard of a king to whom God gave of dominion what He gave this king—judgment, knowledge, and prudence.”

Then Yusuf said to the king: “O King, what do you think of what my Lord has entrusted to me of the dominion of Egypt and its surroundings? Advise us with your opinion, for I did not set them aright to ruin them, nor did I deliver them from affliction to become an affliction upon them; rather God Most High delivered them by my hand.” The king said: “The decision is yours.” Yusuf said: “I call God and you, O King, to witness that I have emancipated all the people of Egypt; I have restored to them their wealth and their slaves; and I have returned to you, O King, your signet-ring, your throne, and your crown—on condition that you conduct yourself only according to my conduct and rule only by my ruling.” The king said to him: “That indeed is my adornment and pride, that I not conduct myself except by your conduct nor rule except by your ruling. Were it not for you, I would have no strength for it nor guidance to it. You have made my authority mighty, inviolable. And I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, alone without partner, and that you are His messenger. So remain over what I have placed you in charge of, for with us you are established and trustworthy.”

Ibn Babawayh, in the Book al-Ghaybah: In a musnad report, he said: A stone slab was seen with writing upon it in the Habashi language. A bishop read it and explained what was in it in Habashi; then it was translated into Arabic. It was written therein: “I am al-Rayyan son of Dawmag …” [continues as in the Arabic, including the account of seeking the Nile’s source, the building of the pyramids and barāniyy, depositing treasures, and the verses of poetry concluding with the prophecy of a wali of my Lord who will appear at the end of time near the environs of the House of Allah]. Ibn Babawayh said: Abu al-Jaysh Khumarawayh ibn Ahmad ibn Tulun said: This is something no one has power over except the Qa’im from the family of Muhammad (peace be upon him). The slab was returned to its place.
