Translation: He ordered that she be stoned, and Ali, the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him), was present. He said to him: “Ask her how she committed fornication.” She said: “I was in a wilderness of the land, and severe thirst struck me. A tent appeared to me, so I approached it and found in it a Bedouin man. I asked him for water, but he refused me [1] unless I let him have his way with me. I turned away from him and fled, but my thirst intensified until my eyes sank in [2] and my tongue failed. When it reached that point, I went to him; he gave me water to drink and then had intercourse with me.” So Ali (peace be upon him) said to him: “This is the one about whom God said: ‘But whoever is compelled, not desiring [to transgress nor exceeding the limit, then there is no sin on him]’—and she is neither seeking immorality nor exceeding the limit—so let her go.” Umar said: “Had it not been for Ali, Umar would have perished.”

99-/778 _8- From Hammad b. ‘Uthman, from Abu ‘Abdillah regarding His saying: “But whoever is compelled, not desiring nor exceeding the limit.” He said: “The bāghī is one seeking game, and the ‘ādī is the thief. Neither of them may shorten the prayer, and neither of them—if compelled to (eat) carrion—may eat it. What is lawful for people when they are compelled is not lawful for them.”

99-/779 _9- Abu ‘Ali al-Tabrisi: from Abu Ja‘far and Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon them): “‘Not desiring’—against the Imam of the Muslims; ‘nor exceeding the limit’—by sinfully following other than the path of those upon the truth.”

Translation (Qur’an 2:177, M. H. Shakir): It is not righteousness that you turn your faces towards the East and the West, but righteousness is this that one should believe in Allah and the last day and the angels and the Book and the prophets, and give away wealth out of love for Him to the near of kin and the orphans and the needy and the wayfarer and the beggars and for the emancipation of the captives, and keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate; and the performers of their promise when they make a promise, and the patient in distress and affliction and in time of conflicts—these are they who are true (to themselves) and these are they who guard (against evil).
