Qur’an 10:9-11

Surely (as for) those who believe and do good, their Lord guides them by their faith; there shall flow from beneath them rivers in gardens of bliss. Their cry therein shall be: Glory to Thee, O Allah! and their greeting therein shall be, Peace; and the last of their cry shall be: Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. And if Allah should hasten the evil to men as they desire the hastening on of good, their doom would certainly have been decreed for them. (M. H. Shakir)

Ibn Babawayh said: ‘Ali b. ‘Abd Allah al-Warraq, Muhammad b. Ahmad al-Sinani, and ‘Ali b. Ahmad b. Muhammad (may Allah be pleased with them) narrated to us; they said: Abu al-‘Abbas Ahmad b. Yahya b. Zakariyya al-Qattan narrated to us; he said: Bakr b. ‘Abd Allah b. Habib narrated to us; he said: Tamim b. Buhlul narrated to us, from his father, from Ja‘far b. Sulayman al-Basri, from ‘Abd Allah b. al-Fadl al-Hashimi, who said: I asked Abu ‘Abd Allah Ja‘far b. Muhammad (peace be upon them) about the words of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: “Whomsoever Allah guides, he is the rightly guided; and whom He leaves to stray, you shall never find for him a guiding friend” (18:17; Shakir). He said: “Verily Allah, Blessed and Exalted, will keep the wrongdoers on the Day of Resurrection away from His abode of honor, and He guides the people of faith and righteous deeds to His Garden, as He, Mighty and Majestic, said: ‘And Allah leaves the wrongdoers to stray; and Allah does what He pleases’ (14:27; Shakir). And He, Mighty and Majestic, said: ‘Surely (as for) those who believe and do good, their Lord guides them by their faith; there shall flow from beneath them rivers in gardens of bliss’ (10:9; Shakir).”

Muhammad b. Ya‘qub, from ‘Ali b. Ibrahim, from his father, from Ibn Mahbub, from Muhammad b. Ishaq al-Madani, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), who said: “The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) was asked about the words of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: ‘On the day We will gather those who guard (against evil) to the Beneficent God to receive honors’ (19:85; Shakir). He said: O ‘Ali, a delegation is only mounted riders. Those are men who had taqwa of Allah, so Allah—mighty is His remembrance—loved them, chose them specially, and was pleased with their deeds; thus He named them the godwary. Then he said to him: O ‘Ali, by Him who split the grain and created life, they shall indeed emerge from their graves, and the angels will meet them with she-camels from the camels of Paradise. Upon them are saddles of gold decked with pearls and rubies; their trappings are brocade and fine silk, and their bridles are twisted purple cords; they fly with them to the place of gathering. With each man of them are a thousand angels before him, on his right, and on his left, escorting them until they bring them to the greatest gate of Paradise. At the gate of Paradise there is a tree such that a single leaf of it will shade a thousand men. On the right of the tree is a purifying, refining spring”—he said—“they are given to drink from it, draught by draught, and Allah purifies their hearts of envy by it and removes hair from their skin—and that is His saying, Mighty and Majestic: ‘And their Lord made them drink a pure beverage’ (76:21; Shakir)—from that purifying spring. Then they are directed to another spring on the left of the tree; they bathe in it—and it is the Fountain of Life—so they never die ever again.

“Then they are made to stand before the Throne, having been made safe forever from afflictions, ailments, heat, and cold.

“Then the All-compeller—glorious is His remembrance—says to the angels with them: Gather My friends to Paradise, and do not hold them back with the rest of creation; My good pleasure has already preceded concerning them, and My mercy has been ordained for them. How could I will to detain them with those of good deeds and bad? Then the angels drive them to Paradise.”

He continued the hadith at length until he said at its end: Then Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) said: “As for the Gardens mentioned in the Book, they are the Garden of ‘Adn, the Garden of Firdaus, the Garden of Bliss, and the Garden of Refuge. Indeed Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has gardens surrounding these gardens; and the believer shall have of the gardens whatever he loves and desires; he enjoys them as he wishes. When the believer wants something or desires, his only call therein, when he wants, is to say: ‘Glory be to You, O Allah’; when he says it, the servants hasten to him with whatever he desires, without his having asked it of them or commanded it—and that is His saying, Mighty and Majestic: ‘Their cry therein shall be: Glory to Thee, O Allah! and their greeting therein shall be, Peace’—meaning the servants. ‘And the last of their cry shall be: Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds’—meaning thereby that when they finish their pleasures of intimacy, food, and drink, they praise Allah, Mighty and Majestic, upon completing them.”

And the hadith is long; it will come in full—God willing—under His words: “On the day We will gather those who guard (against evil) to the Beneficent God to receive honors” from Surat Maryam (19:85; Shakir).

Ibn Babawayh, said: Muhammad b. ‘Ali Majilawayh narrated to us, from his uncle Muhammad b. Abi al-Qasim, from Ahmad b. Abi ‘Abd Allah al-Barqi, from Abu al-Hasan ‘Ali b. al-Husayn al-Barqi, from ‘Abd Allah b. Jabalāh, from Mu‘awiya b. ‘Ammar, from al-Hasan b. ‘Abd Allah, from his father, from his grandfather al-Hasan b. ‘Ali b. Abi Talib (peace be upon them), who said: “A Jew asked the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family): Inform me about the explanation of ‘Subhan Allah, and al-Hamdu lillah, and la ilaha illa Allah, and Allahu Akbar.’ The Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family) said: Allah, Mighty and Majestic, knew that the children of Adam would lie against Allah, Mighty and Majestic; so He said ‘Subhan Allah’—declaring Him transcendent above what they say. As for His saying ‘al-Hamdu lillah,’ He knew that the servants do not render thanks for His blessing; so He praised Himself before they praised Him—and it is the beginning of speech; were it not so, Allah would not have bestowed His blessing upon anyone. And His saying ‘la ilaha illa Allah’ means His Oneness; Allah accepts deeds only with it; it is the word of taqwa; by it Allah makes the scales heavy on the Day of Resurrection. And as for His saying ‘Allahu Akbar,’ it is the highest of words and the most beloved of them to Allah, Mighty and Majestic; it means that there is nothing greater than Me; the prayer is not valid except with it due to its honor before Allah, and it is the most noble Name.

“The Jew said: You have spoken the truth, O Muhammad; so what is the reward of one who says them? He said: When the servant says ‘Subhan Allah,’ everything beneath the Throne glorifies along with him, and the one who says it is given tenfold its like. And when he says ‘al-Hamdu lillah,’ Allah bestows on him the bliss of this world connected to the bliss of the Hereafter; and it is the word that the people of Paradise say when they enter it, and speech that they used to say in the world is cut off except ‘al-Hamdu lillah’—and that is His saying, Mighty and Glorious: ‘Their cry therein shall be: Glory to Thee, O Allah! and their greeting therein shall be, Peace; and the last of their cry shall be: Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds’ (10:10; Shakir). And as for his saying ‘la ilaha illa Allah,’ its reward is Paradise; and that is His saying, Mighty and Majestic: ‘Is the reward of goodness aught but goodness?’ (55:60; Shakir)—that is, is the reward of ‘la ilaha illa Allah’ anything but Paradise?” The Jew said: “You have spoken the truth, O Muhammad.”

99-/4851 (4) - Tafsir al-‘Ayyashi 2:9/120

Al-‘Ayyashi, from Zayd al-Shahham, from Abu ‘Abd Allah (peace be upon him), who said: I asked him about tasbih. He said: “It is one of the Names of Allah, and the call of the people of Paradise.”

Al-Mufid in al-Ikhtisas, with his isnad from Ja‘far b. Muhammad, from his father, from his grandfather al-Husayn b. ‘Ali b. Abi Talib (peace be upon them), from the Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family)—in a long hadith with a Jew who had asked him about several matters—said: “When the servant says ‘Subhan Allah,’ everything beneath the Throne glorifies along with him, and the one who says it is given tenfold its like. And when he says ‘al-Hamdu lillah,’ Allah bestows upon him the bliss of this world until He meets him with the bliss of the Hereafter; and it is the word that the people of Paradise say when they enter it; and speech is cut off in the world except ‘al-Hamdu lillah’—and that is His saying: ‘their greeting therein shall be, Peace’ (10:10; Shakir).”

99-/4853 (6) - Tafsir al-Qummi 1:309

‘Ali b. Ibrahim, regarding His words: “And if Allah should hasten the evil to men as they desire the hastening on of good, their doom would certainly have been decreed for them” (10:11; Shakir), said: If Allah hastened for them the evil as they hasten the good, their term would be concluded for them, that is, their term would be finished.

Qur’an 10:12

And when affliction touches a man, he calls on Us, lying on his side or sitting or standing; but when We remove his affliction from him, he passes on as though he had never called on Us on account of an affliction that touched him. (M. H. Shakir)
