S 54 Ayat 42 to 47

“They called Our communications false, therefore We overtook them with the punishment of the Mighty, the Powerful. Are your unbelievers better than these, or is there an exemption for you in the scriptures? Or do they say: We are a host allied together to help each other? Soon shall the hosts be routed, and they shall turn (their) backs. Nay! the hour is their promised time, and the hour shall be most grievous and bitter. Surely the guilty are in error and distress.”

99-/10276 _2- ʿAlī ibn Ibrāhīm, regarding the verse of Allah: "أَ كُفّٰارُكُمْ خَيْرٌ مِنْ أُولٰئِكُمْ" — This is an address to Quraysh, meaning: Are your disbelievers better than those (past nations) who were destroyed? "أَمْ لَكُمْ بَرٰاءَةٌ فِي الزُّبُرِ" — That is, do you have an exemption in the (Divine) scriptures that you will not be destroyed like those were? So Quraysh said: “We have assembled together to take victory and kill you, O Muḥammad.”

99-/10276 _2- Then Allah revealed: "أَمْ يَقُولُونَ نَحْنُ جَمِيعٌ مُنْتَصِرٌ" — [Say, O Muḥammad:] Do they say, “We are a united group, capable of victory”? "سَيُهْزَمُ الْجَمْعُ وَ يُوَلُّونَ الدُّبُرَ" — Their assembly shall be defeated, and they will turn their backs in retreat — meaning the day of Badr, when they were defeated, captured, and killed.

Then He said: "بَلِ السّٰاعَةُ مَوْعِدُهُمْ" — Rather, the Hour (Day of Resurrection) is their appointed time. "وَ السّٰاعَةُ أَدْهىٰ وَ أَمَرُّ" — And the Hour is more disastrous and more bitter. And His saying: "إِنَّ الْمُجْرِمِينَ فِي ضَلاٰلٍ وَ سُعُرٍ" — The sinners will be in error and burning. Sʿuʿr is a deep valley in Hell, immense in severity.
