Concerning the Praise of Imam Husain (a.s.) in the Qur'an and Hadith

Concerning the Praise of Imam Husain (a.s.) in the Qur'an and Hadith

Another of the special characteristics of that noble Imam (a.s.) is that he was praised by both friend and foe.

Thus, he has been praised in the Qur'an through several descriptions.

One is that he is the «al-Nafs al-Mutmainnah» (“the tranquil soul”).

Another is that he is «kafal rahmah» (“a double portion of mercy”).

Another is that he is among those included in «waalid» (“the parent”), regarding whom Allah has made kindness obligatory, as has been mentioned in the interpretation of both verses. [203]

Likewise, the intended meaning of «man qatala mazlooman» (“whoever is slain unjustly”) in its esoteric interpretation refers to him (a.s.).

Similarly, «zibh azeem» (“the great sacrifice”) refers to him.

And «kaaf-haa-yaa-ayn-swaad» relates to the tragedy of Karbala.

Likewise, he has been mentioned by several names, such as «al-fajr» (“the Dawn”), «az-zaytoon» (“the Olive”), and «al-marjaan» (“the Coral”), and all of these are found in the transmitted narrations.

It has also been written upon the right side of the Throne:

“Indeed, Imam Husain (a.s.) is the Lamp of Guidance and the Ark of Salvation.” [204]

In the sacred traditions (aḥādīth qudsiyyah), praise of him (a.s.) has also been mentioned:

“Blessed is the child upon whom are My blessings and My mercy.” [205]

It is also narrated that Allah said concerning him:

“He is the light of My friends, My proof over My creation, and a treasure reserved for the sinners.” [206]

As the details will come later, if Allah wills.

The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) also praised him with remarkable qualities.

Among them is that one day he said:

“Welcome to you, O adornment of the heavens and the earth.”

Ubayy ibn Kaʿb asked:

“Can anyone besides you be the adornment of the heavens and the earth?”

The Prophet (s.a.w.a.) replied:

“By the One Who sent me with the truth as a Messenger, Imam Husain (a.s.) ibn Ali (a.s.) is greater among the inhabitants of the heavens than he is among the inhabitants of the earth.

Indeed, Allah has written on the right side of the Throne:

‘Indeed, Imam Husain (a.s.) is the Lamp of Guidance and the Ark of Salvation.’” [207]

Then he took the hand of Imam Husain (a.s.) and said:

“O people! This is Imam Husain (a.s.) ibn Ali (a.s.). Therefore, recognize him and give him precedence, just as Allah has given him precedence...” to the end of the tradition. [208]

The translator says:

“The omission of a specific object implies generality. Thus, this hadith indicates his superiority in an unrestricted and comprehensive manner.” End quote.

In any case, all the angels, prophets, and righteous servants also praised him.

Among his special distinctions is that both his friends and his enemies praised him.

Among them, Muʿawiyah praised him in the advice he gave to Yazid. [209]

Likewise, Ibn Saʿd praised him in some of his verses. [210]

And when Imam Husain (a.s.) enumerated his virtues and sought testimony from the enemy army, they all acknowledged them. [211]

Even Shimr, the accursed, cried out:

“Indeed, he is a noble and worthy opponent,”

meaning that being killed by his hand would not be a disgrace. [212]

Likewise, Sinān, while engaged in killing that noble Imam (a.s.), said:

“You I kill, while I know that your father is the noblest of the children of Adam.” [213]

And the accursed man who brought the blessed head of the Imam (a.s.) to Ibn Ziyad recited:

“Load my camels with silver and gold,

For I have killed the noble and veiled master.

I have killed the best of people in father and mother,

And the best of them when lineages are traced.” [214]

Likewise, Yazid praised the Imam (a.s.) when Hind, his wife, entered the public assembly without a veil or covering.

Yazid stood up, covered her head, and said:

“Go and weep and lament for Imam Husain (a.s.), for he is the chief of Quraysh.” [215]

So if even Yazid spoke in this manner, then why should you, his lovers, remain silent from weeping and lamentation, and not mourn for the Master of the Youths?
