When they fixed their common folk upon disbelief in Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family), and the denial of the testament concerning his brother, Ali, the Friend of Allah.

99-/518 _2- Al-‘Ayyāshī: from Muhammad b. Sālim, from Abū Basīr, who said: Ja‘far b. Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “Abd Allāh b. ‘Amr b. al-‘Āṣ came out from ‘Uthmān and met the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him). He said to him: O ‘Alī, we spent the night plotting a matter in the hope that Allah will make this community steadfast. The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) said: Nothing of what you plotted is hidden from me. You have distorted, altered, and changed nine hundred letters: three hundred you distorted, three hundred you altered, and three hundred you changed. So woe to those who write the Book with their hands, then say, ‘This is from Allah,’ to the end of the verse.”

Qur’an 2:80-81 (M. H. Shakir):

And they say: The fire shall not touch us but for a few days. Say: Have you taken a covenant with Allah, so that Allah will not fail in His covenant? Or do you speak against Allah what you do not know? [80]

Yea! whoever earns evil and his sins beset him on every side, these are the inmates of the fire; in it they shall abide. [81]

99-/519 _1- The Imam al-‘Askarī (peace be upon him) said: “Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: And they said—meaning the Jews who persist in wretchedness, those who outwardly display faith while concealing hypocrisy, who plot against the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) and his kin with what they think will bring about their ruin: ‘The Fire will not touch us except for a few numbered days.’ That was because they had in-laws and milk-brothers among the Muslims, who concealed their disbelief from Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) and his companions, even though they knew it, as a safeguard for their kin and in-laws. These Muslims said to them: Why do you practice this hypocrisy, when you know that by it you incur Allah’s wrath and punishment? Those Jews replied: The term of that punishment with which we shall be chastised for these sins will expire after a few numbered days; then thereafter we shall be in bliss in the Gardens. So we will not hasten to face what is disliked in this world on account of a punishment proportionate to the days of our sins, for they will perish and pass away; and we will have attained the delights of freedom from servitude and the pleasures of worldly blessings, and then we will not mind what may befall us afterward, for if it is not lasting, it is as though it has perished. So Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: Say, O Muhammad: Have you taken a covenant with Allah that your punishment for your disbelief in Muhammad, and your rejection of his signs in his own self, and in ‘Alī and the rest of his successors and friends, is cut off and not everlasting? Rather, it is but a lasting punishment without end. So do not dare to commit sins and vile deeds—disbelief in Allah, in His Messenger, and in His vicegerent appointed after him over his community to govern them and care for them with the care of a compassionate, merciful, generous father for his child, and with the solicitude of one who bends over his special ones in concern. Allah will not fail in His covenant; and are you, with what you claim about the ending of the punishment of these your sins, in a safeguard? Or do you say against Allah what you do not know? Have you taken a covenant—or are you saying? Rather, whichever of the two you claim—you are liars.” Then Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: “Yea! whoever earns evil and his sin encompasses him—those are the companions of the Fire; in it they shall abide.” The Imam (peace be upon him) said: “The encompassing evil is that which removes him from the community of Allah’s religion, strips him of Allah’s guardianship, and casts him into Allah’s wrath; it is associating partners with Allah, disbelief in Him, disbelief in the prophethood of Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family), and disbelief in the guardianship of ‘Alī b. Abī Ṭālib (peace be upon him). Each one of these is an evil that encompasses him—that is, it encompasses his deeds and nullifies and obliterates them. Those who commit this encompassing evil are the companions of the Fire; in it they shall abide.” Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) said: “The guardianship of ‘Alī is a good deed with which no evil harms, even if it is grave—except that its people may be purified of it by the trials of this world, and by some punishment in the Hereafter—until they are saved from it by the intercession of their pure, good patrons. And the guardianship of the adversaries of ‘Alī and opposition to ‘Alī (peace be upon him) is an evil with which nothing benefits—except what benefits them in this world for their obedience (to worldly causes) by blessings, health, and abundance; then they will arrive at the Hereafter and have nothing but everlasting punishment. Indeed, whoever denies the guardianship of ‘Alī will never see Paradise with his eye, except that he sees it in a way by which he knows that had he been loyal to him, that would have been his place, his refuge, and his abode—so his regrets and remorses increase. And whoever is loyal to ‘Alī, disavows his enemies, and submits to his friends, will never see the Fire with his eye—except that he will be shown: ‘Had you been other than this, that would have been your abode’; and except what he may directly undergo of it if he has been excessive against himself short of disbelief—only that he be cleansed in Hell, just as his filth is cleansed by a hot bath—then he is removed from it by the intercession of his patrons.”

Behold! ‘Alī is a part of me; whoever fights him has fought me and has angered my Lord.” Then he called ‘Alī and said: “O ‘Alī, your war is my war, and your peace is my peace, and you are the standard between me and my community.”
