99-/7199 - Some contemporaries, in a book of his on al-Raj‘ah, with his chain, concerning His saying, “And it is forbidden to a town which We have destroyed that they shall not return” (al-Anbiya 21:95), reported that al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: “Every town whose people Allah destroyed with the punishment will not return in the raj‘ah; as for the Resurrection, they will return. And those who purified faith in pure form, and those others who were not destroyed by the punishment but purified unbelief in pure form, they will return.”

99-/7200 - ‘Ali b. Ibrahim said: Ja‘far b. Ahmad narrated to us, from ‘Ubayd Allah b. Musa, from al-Husayn b. ‘Ali b. Abi Hamzah, from his father, from Abu Basir—in the account of Dhu’l-Qarnayn, which has preceded in Surat al-Kahf—he said in it: “When it is before the Day of Resurrection, at the end of time, that barrier will collapse, and Gog and Magog will come out into the world and devour the people; and this is His saying, Most High: ‘Until when Gog and Magog are let loose and they shall rush down from every elevated place’ (al-Anbiya 21:96).”

99-/7201 - ‘Ali b. Ibrahim said: When it is the end of time, Gog and Magog will come out into the world and will eat the people. And the hadith of Gog and Magog has preceded in Surat al-Kahf.

M. H. Shakir: Surely you and what you worship besides Allah are the firewood of hell; to it you shall come. Had these been gods, they would not have come to it and all shall abide therein. For them therein shall be groaning and they shall not hear therein aught. Surely those for whom the good has already gone forth from Us, they shall be kept far off from it; they shall not hear its faintest sound, and they shall abide in that in which their souls long. The great fearful event shall not grieve them, and the angels shall meet them: This is your day which you were promised.

99-/7202 - ‘Ali b. Ibrahim, on His saying, “Surely you and what you worship besides Allah are the firewood of Hell … to His saying: and they shall not hear therein” (al-Anbiya 21:98-100), said: In the narration of Abu’l-Jarud, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him): “When this verse was revealed, the people of Mecca were greatly distressed by it. ‘Abd Allah b. al-Zib‘ara entered upon them while the disbelievers of Quraysh were discussing this verse. Ibn al-Zib‘ara said: ‘Did Muhammad speak this verse?’ They said: ‘Yes.’ He said: ‘If he admits to this, I will certainly debate and overcome him.’ So they were brought together, and he said: ‘O Muhammad, the verse you just recited—does it concern us and our deities specifically, or nations of the past and their deities as well?’ He (Allah bless him and his family) said: ‘Rather, it concerns you and your deities, and the past nations and their deities—except whom Allah exempts.’ Ibn al-Zib‘ara said: ‘I will certainly argue against you, by Allah! Do you not praise ‘Isa with good, while you know that the Christians worship ‘Isa and his mother, and that a group of people worship the angels? Will not these be in the Fire along with the deities?’ The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and his family) said: ‘No.’ Quraysh clamored and laughed and said: ‘Ibn al-Zib‘ara has defeated you.’ The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and his family) said: ‘You have spoken falsehood. Did I not say “except whom Allah exempts”? And that is His saying, Most High: “Surely those for whom the good has already gone forth from Us—they shall be kept far off from it; they shall not hear its faintest sound, and they shall abide in that in which their souls long” (al-Anbiya 21:101-102).’ He said: ‘His saying, Most High, “the firewood of Hell”—He says: they will be hurled into it with a hurling.’ He said: ‘His saying, Most High, “they shall be kept far off from it” means the angels and ‘Isa son of Mary (peace be upon them both).’”

99-/7203 - And ‘Ali b. Ibrahim said, regarding His saying, “Surely those for whom the good has already gone forth from Us—they shall be kept far off from it” (al-Anbiya 21:101): It abrogates His saying, “And there is not one of you but shall come to it” (Maryam 19:71).

99-/7204 - ‘Abd Allah b. Ja‘far al-Himyari, with his chain from Mas‘adah b. Ziyad, said: Ja‘far narrated to me, from his father, that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and his family) said: “Allah, blessed and exalted, will bring on the Day of Resurrection everything that was worshiped besides Him—sun, moon, and other than that—then He will ask each person about what he used to worship. Everyone who worshiped other than Him will say: ‘Our Lord, we used to worship them only to bring us nearer to You in nearness.’ Then Allah, blessed and exalted, will say to the angels: ‘Take them, and what they used to worship, to the Fire—except those whom I have exempted; they shall be kept far from it.’”

99-/7205 - Muhammad b. al-‘Abbas said: Abu Ja‘far al-Hasan b. ‘Ali b. al-Walid al-Fasawi narrated to us, with his chain from al-Nu‘man b. Bashir, who said: We were one night with ‘Ali b. Abi Talib (peace be upon him), visiting by night, when he recited this verse: “Surely those for whom the good has already gone forth from Us—they shall be kept far off from it” (al-Anbiya 21:101). He said: “I am among them.” Then the prayer was established, so he leapt up and entered the mosque, saying: “They shall not hear its faintest sound, and they shall abide in that in which their souls long” (al-Anbiya 21:102), and then he pronounced the takbir for the prayer.

99-/7206 - And from him, he said: Ibrahim b. Muhammad b. Sahl al-Naysaburi narrated to us—raising it with his chain to Rabi‘ b. Bazi‘—who said: We were with ‘Abd Allah b. ‘Umar, and a man from Banu Taym Allah, called Hassan b. Radiyah, said to him: “O Abu ‘Abd al-Rahman, I saw two men who mentioned ‘Ali and ‘Uthman and reviled them both.” Ibn ‘Umar said: “If they cursed them, then may Allah curse them.” Then he said: “Woe to you, O people of Iraq! How can you insult a man whose place is as this is to the place of the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and his family),” and he pointed with his hand to the house of ‘Ali (peace be upon him) in the mosque. Then he said: “By the Lord of this sanctity, he is among those for whom the good has already gone forth from Us”—meaning thereby ‘Ali (peace be upon him).

99-/7207 - Ibn Babawayh said: Muhammad b. ‘Ali Majilawayh narrated to us, with his chain from Jamil b. Darraj, from Aban b. Taghlib, who said: Abu ‘Abd Allah (peace be upon him) said: “Allah will raise our Shi‘ah on the Day of Resurrection—despite what is in them of sins and blemishes—with faces whitened and radiant, their private matters covered, their terrors secured; passages are made easy for them and hardships are removed from them; they ride she-camels of ruby, circling through the Garden; upon them are straps of light that gleam; tables are set for them so they continue to eat while the people are in the Reckoning. And that is the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: ‘Surely those for whom the good has already gone forth from Us—they shall be kept far off from it; they shall not hear its faintest sound, and they shall abide in that in which their souls long’ (al-Anbiya 21:101-102).”

99-/7208 - Ibn Babawayh said: My father (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated to me, saying: Sa‘d b. ‘Abd Allah narrated to us, saying: Ahmad b. Muhammad b. Khalid, from al-Qasim b. Yahya, from his grandfather al-Hasan b. Rashid, from Abu ‘Abd Allah Ja‘far b. Muhammad al-Sadiq, from his forefathers, from the Commander of the Faithful (blessings of Allah upon them), who said: “The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and his family) said to me upon his pulpit: ‘O ‘Ali, Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has granted you love for the poor and the oppressed in the earth, so you were pleased to have them as brothers, and they were pleased to have you as an Imam. So blessed is he who loves you and confirms you, and woe to him who hates you and lies against you. O ‘Ali, you are the banner for this Ummah; whoever loves you succeeds, and whoever hates you perishes. O ‘Ali, I am the city of knowledge and you are its gate; and is a city approached except through its gate? O ‘Ali, those devoted to your affection are every oft-returning, mindful one, and everyone of shabby garments; if he were to swear by Allah, He would fulfill his oath. O ‘Ali, your brothers are every pure, refined, striving one who loves for your sake and hates for your sake—insignificant in the sight of creation, mighty in rank with Allah, Mighty and Majestic. O ‘Ali, your lovers are the neighbors of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, in the abode of Firdaus; they do not grieve over what they left behind. O ‘Ali, I am the ally of whomever you ally with, and the enemy of whomever you oppose. O ‘Ali, whoever loves you has loved me, and whoever hates you has hated me. O ‘Ali, your brothers have withered lips; monkhood is recognized on their faces. O ‘Ali, your brothers rejoice in three stations: at the departure of their souls—while I and you are present with them; and at the questioning in their graves; and at the Great Display; and at the Sirat when creation are asked about their faith and they do not answer. O ‘Ali, your war is my war, and your peace is my peace; and my war is Allah’s war, and my peace is Allah’s peace. So whoever makes peace with you has made peace with me, and whoever makes peace with me has made peace with Allah, Mighty and Majestic. O ‘Ali, give your brothers glad tidings, for Allah, Mighty and Majestic, is pleased with them as He has chosen you for them as a leader, and they were pleased with you as a guardian. O ‘Ali, you are the Commander of the Faithful and the leader of the bright-marked. O ‘Ali, your Shi‘ah are the chosen; and were it not for you and your Shi‘ah, the religion of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, would not stand. And were it not for those of you upon the earth, the sky would not send down its rain. O ‘Ali, you have a treasure in the Garden and you are its Dhu’l-Qarnayn, and your Shi‘ah are known as the Party of Allah, Mighty and Majestic. O ‘Ali, you and your Shi‘ah are those who uphold justice, and the choice of Allah from His creation. O ‘Ali, I am the first to shake the dust from his head, and you are with me, then the rest of creation. O ‘Ali, you and your Shi‘ah are at the Pool; you give drink to whom you wish and withhold from whom you wish; and you are the secure on the Day of the Greatest Terror in the shade of the Throne—people will be terrified and you will not be terrified; people will grieve and you will not grieve. Concerning you this verse was revealed: “Surely those for whom the good has already gone forth from Us—they shall be kept far off from it” (al-Anbiya 21:101); and concerning you it was revealed: “The great fearful event shall not grieve them, and the angels shall meet them: This is your day which you were promised” (al-Anbiya 21:103).’”

… [continued as in the Arabic through the end of the sermon]

99-/7208 (continued) - “O ‘Ali … And they ask Allah on behalf of your lovers, and they rejoice at whoever from you arrives to them, just as a family rejoices at the arrival of an absent one after a long absence. …” [The rest of the sermon continues as in the Arabic, to its end.]

99-/7209 - ‘Ali b. Ibrahim said: My father narrated to me, from Muhammad b. Abi ‘Umayr, from Mansur b. Yunus, from ‘Amr b. Abi Shaybah, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), who said—I heard him say, initiating the speech himself: “When Allah wills to make His creation manifest and gather them for what must be, He commands a caller who calls out, and humans and jinn assemble faster than the blink of an eye. Then He permits the lowest heaven to descend, and it will be behind the people; and He permits the second heaven to descend, and it is twice the one next to it. When the people of the lowest heaven see it, they say: ‘Our Lord has come.’ They say—and His command comes—until every heaven descends, each one of them behind the other, each twice the one next to it. Then the command of Allah descends in canopies of cloud, and the angels, and the matter is decreed, and to Allah all affairs return. Then Allah commands a herald who calls out: ‘O assembly of jinn and men! If you are able to pass through the regions of the heavens and the earth, then pass through; you cannot pass through except with authority’ (al-Rahman 55:33).”
