Other Books on the Khasa’is

  1. The oldest book that has reached us concerning the special characteristics of Imam Husain (a.s.) is al-Durr al-Nadid fi Khasa’is al Husain  al-Shahid.

This book was written more than three centuries ago by Sayyid Hashim Bahrani, the author of Tafsir al-Burhan, who passed away in 1107 A.H.

The author of al-Dhari‘ah states that the author of Riyad saw a copy of it in the possession of the author's son in Isfahan. [34] However, in the printed edition of Riyad, it is referred to as al-Durr al-Nadid fi Fada’il al-Imam al-Shahid. [35]

The contemporary writer ‘Abd al Husain Tala‘i, in the valuable introduction he wrote for the book Majalis al-Mawa‘iz, introduced this work as a translation of Khasa’is Shushtari. [36] He then explained in a footnote that its translator was a person named Sayyid Hashim Bahrani, but that he was someone other than the Muhaddith Bahrani, the author of the Tafsir.

Unfortunately, he erred in both matters. He had taken this title from al-Dhari‘ah, and the author of al-Dhari‘ah explicitly states that it is one of the works of “Sayyid Hashim ibn Sulayman ibn Isma‘il al-Tubali al-Bahrani,” who passed away in 1107 A.H. He further adds that the author of Riyad saw it in the library of the author's son in Isfahan. [37]

Accordingly, this book cannot be a translation of Khasa’is, because its author passed away two centuries before the composition of Khasa’is, and the person who reported its existence also passed away approximately two centuries before the late Shushtari.

  1. Another book concerning the special characteristics of Imam Husain (a.s.) is Lawa’ih al-Lawhayn fi Sharh Khasa’is al Husain (a.s.) wa Asrar Shahadatih, written by Sayyid Muhammad Baqir ibn Sayyid Murtada Tabataba’i Yazdi Ha’iri, who passed away in 1298 A.H. [38]

This work was composed in two volumes. One copy exists in Tehran in the library of Sayyid Ahmad Tabataba’i, the author's son; another copy is in Karbala in the library of Shaykh Abdullah Andarmani; and two copies are preserved in Qom in the library of Ayatullah al-Mar‘ashi.

The author was a contemporary of Shaykh Ja‘far Shushtari, the author of Khasa’is. A manuscript copy in the handwriting of Aman Allah Ardabili, dated 16 Jumada al-Ula 1295 A.H., comprising 360 folios, is preserved in the library of Ayatullah al-Mar‘ashi under number 331. On its first page is an endorsement written in the handwriting of Shaykh Ja‘far Shushtari and bearing his seal, dated 1295 A.H. Another endorsement, written in the handwriting of Mirza Shirazi and bearing his noble seal, is also found therein. [39]

Another copy, written in the author's own hand and containing additions not found in the first manuscript, consisting of 287 folios, is preserved in the library of Ayatullah al-Mar‘ashi under number 2472 and is dated to the first ten days of Jumada al-Thani, 1296 A.H. [40]

Mr. Tala‘i also erred in this matter and described this book as a translation of Shushtari's Khasa’is. [41]

By examining the text of the book itself, it becomes clear that he was mistaken, because:

First: This book is in Arabic, not Persian.

Second: The chapter headings of this book bear no relation to the chapter headings of Khasa’is.

Third: The date of its composition precedes the date of composition of Khasa’is.

Fourth: The late Shushtari had seen this book before composing Khasa’is and had written an endorsement upon it.

  1. The third and final book known to us in this regard is al-Khasa’is al Husainiyyah by Hajj Ghulam ‘Ali ibn Isma‘il Bahawngari, who passed away around 1367 A.H. It was written in the Gujarati language. [42]
