Hud Ayah 12
Shakir: Then maybe you will give up part of what is revealed to you, and your breast will become straitened by it, because they say: Why has not a treasure been sent down upon him or an angel come with him? You are only a warner; and Allah is custodian over all things. (Hud 11:12)

English: Muhammad b. Ya‘qub from Muhammad b. Yahya from Ahmad b. Muhammad from Muhammad b. Khalid and al-Husayn b. Sa‘id from al-Nadr b. Suwayd from Yahya al-Halabi from Ibn Maskan from ‘Ammar b. Suwayd, who said: I heard Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) say regarding this verse: “Then maybe you will give up part of what is revealed to you and your breast will become straitened by it because they say: Why has not a treasure been sent down upon him or an angel come with him.” He said: “When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) halted at Qudayd [1], he said to ‘Ali (peace be upon him): O ‘Ali, I asked my Lord to bring about mutual devotion between me and you, and He did so; and I asked my Lord to make brotherhood between me and you, and He did so; and I asked my Lord to make you my legatee, and He did so. Two men from Quraysh said: By Allah, a measure of dates in a worn-out waterskin [2] is more beloved to us than what Muhammad asked of his Lord. Why did he not ask his Lord for an angel to support him against his enemy, or a treasure by which he could spare himself his poverty?! By Allah, he did not call him [3] to truth or to falsehood but that he answered him to it. So Allah, Blessed and Exalted, sent down: ‘Then maybe you will give up part of what is revealed to you …’ to the end of the verse.”

A man from the Companions said: By Allah, a measure of dates in a worn-out waterskin is more beloved to me than what Muhammad asked of his Lord. English: Al-‘Ayyashi from ‘Ammar b. Suwayd, who said: I heard Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) say regarding this verse: “Then maybe you will give up part of what is revealed to you … up to His saying: or an angel come with him.” He said: “When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) alighted at Qudayd [3], he said to ‘Ali (peace be upon him): I asked my Lord to bring about mutual devotion between me and you, and He did so; and I asked my Lord to make brotherhood between me and you, and He did so; and I asked my Lord to make you my legatee, and He did so. A man [4] from Quraysh said: By Allah, a measure of dates in a worn-out waterskin is more beloved to us than what Muhammad asked of his Lord. Should he not have asked for an angel to support him against his enemy, or a treasure to seek aid with in his poverty?! By Allah, he did not call him to falsehood except that he answered him to it. So Allah sent down to him: ‘Then maybe you will give up part of what is revealed to you …’ to the end of the verse.” He said: “And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) supplicated for the Commander of the Faithful at the end of his prayer, raising his voice so people could hear: O Allah, grant ‘Ali affection in the breasts of the believers, and awe and greatness in the breasts of the hypocrites. So Allah sent down: Surely (as for) those who believe and do good deeds, the Beneficent will bring about for them love (Maryam 19:96). We have only made it easy in your tongue so that you may give good news to those who guard (against evil) and warn with it a vehemently contentious people [1]—the Banu Umayyah. A man said: By Allah, a measure of dates in a worn-out waterskin is more beloved to me than what Muhammad asked of his Lord. Should he not have asked for an angel to support him or for a treasure to help with his poverty?! Then Allah sent down about him ten verses from Hud, the first of them: ‘Then maybe you will give up part of what is revealed to you …’ up to: Or do they say: He has forged it?—the wilayah of ‘Ali. Say: Then bring ten forged surahs like it … up to: But if they do not answer you regarding the wilayah of ‘Ali (peace and blessings be upon him), then know that it has only been revealed with Allah’s knowledge and that there is no god but He; will you then submit [2]—to ‘Ali and his wilayah? ‘Whoever desires this world’s life and its adornment’—meaning so-and-so and so-and-so—‘We will repay them in full their deeds therein’ [3]. ‘Is he who stands on a clear proof from his Lord’—the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family)—‘and a witness from Him follows him’—the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him)—‘and before him the Book of Musa, a guide and a mercy’ [4]—he said: ‘Ali’s wilayah was in the Book of Musa—‘They believe in it; and whoever of the confederates disbelieves in it, the Fire is his promised place. Therefore be not in doubt about it’ [5]—about the wilayah of ‘Ali. ‘Surely it is the truth from your Lord’—up to His saying: ‘And the witnesses shall say’ [6]—they are the Imams (peace be upon them)—‘These are they who lied against their Lord’—up to His saying: ‘Are the two alike in comparison? Will you not then take heed?’” [7]

English: From Jabir b. Arqam, from his brother Zayd b. Arqam, who said: Indeed Gabriel, the trustworthy Spirit, descended upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) with the wilayah of ‘Ali b. Abi Talib (peace be upon him) on the evening of ‘Arafah. That weighed upon the breast of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), fearing the denial of the people of slander and hypocrisy. He summoned a group among whom I was present and consulted them about announcing it during the pilgrimage season. We did not know what to say to him, and he wept (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). Gabriel said to him: O Muhammad, have you become anxious about Allah’s command? He said: “Not at all, O Gabriel; but my Lord knows what I faced from Quraysh, for they did not acknowledge my Messengership until He commanded me to fight them and sent down troops from heaven who helped me. So how will they acknowledge ‘Ali after me?!” Then Gabriel departed from him, and there descended: “Then maybe you will give up part of what is revealed to you and your breast will become straitened by it.”

English: Ibn Babawayh in his Amali said: My father narrated to us, who said: Sa‘d b. ‘Abdillah narrated to us… (up to) from ‘Abayah b. Rib‘i from ‘Abdullah b. ‘Abbas, who said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) was taken by night to heaven, Gabriel brought him to a river called al-Nur—and it is Allah’s saying: “and made the darkness and the light” [8]. When he reached that river, Gabriel (peace be upon him) said to him: O Muhammad, cross by Allah’s blessing; Allah has illuminated your sight and extended what lies before you. This is a river that none has crossed—neither a near angel nor a sent prophet—except that I have, once each day, a dipping in it, then I come out and shake my wings; and not a single drop falls from my wings but that Allah, Blessed and Exalted, creates from it a near angel with twenty thousand faces and forty thousand tongues—each tongue uttering a language the other tongue does not understand. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) crossed until he reached the veils—five hundred veils, between each veil a distance of five hundred years. Then he (Gabriel) said: Advance, O Muhammad. He said to him: “O Gabriel, why will you not be with me?” He said: It is not for me to pass beyond this place. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) advanced as much as Allah willed until he heard what the Lord, Blessed and Exalted, said: I am al-Mahmud and you are Muhammad; I derived your name from My name. Whoever joins you, I will join him; and whoever cuts you off, I will cut him off [1]. Descend to My servants and inform them of My honoring you, and that I have not sent a prophet but that I made for him a minister, and that you are My Messenger and that ‘Ali is your minister. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) descended, and he disliked to tell the people anything, fearing they would accuse him, for they were newly removed from the Jahiliyyah. Six days passed thus, and Allah, Blessed and Exalted, sent down: “Then maybe you will give up part of what is revealed to you and your breast will become straitened by it.” The Messenger of Allah bore that until the eighth day, when Allah sent down to him: “O Messenger! deliver what has been revealed to you from your Lord; and if you do it not, then you have not delivered His message, and Allah will protect you from the people” [2]. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: “A threat after a warning! I will certainly carry out the command [3] of Allah, Mighty and Majestic. If they accuse me and belie me, that is easier for me than that Allah punish me with a painful punishment in this world and the next.” He said: Gabriel (peace be upon him) gave salutation to ‘Ali (peace be upon him) as Commander of the Faithful. ‘Ali (peace be upon him) said: “O Messenger of Allah, I hear the speech but do not perceive the vision.” He said: “O ‘Ali, this is Gabriel; he has come to me from my Lord confirming what He promised me.” Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) instructed his companions one by one until they gave him salutation as Commander of the Faithful. Then he said: “O Bilal, call among the people that no one—except whoever is ill—should remain tomorrow, but all should go out to Ghadir Khumm.” The next day the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) went out with a group of his companions, praised Allah and extolled Him, then said: “O people, Allah, Blessed and Exalted, has sent me to you with a message, and it constrained me, fearing that you would accuse and belie me, until Allah sent down to me warning after warning. Your belying me is lighter upon me than Allah’s punishment. Allah took me by night and made me hear, and said to me: O Muhammad, I am al-Mahmud and you are Muhammad; I derived your name from My name—whoever joins you I will join him, and whoever cuts you off I will cut him off. Descend to My servants and inform them of My honoring you, and that I have not sent a prophet but that I made for him a minister; and that you are My Messenger and that ‘Ali is your minister.” Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) took the hand of ‘Ali b. Abi Talib (peace be upon him) and raised it until the people looked at the whiteness of their armpits, the like of which had not been seen before. Then he said: “O people, Allah, Blessed and Exalted, is my Master, and I am the master of the believers. Whomever I am his master, ‘Ali is his master. O Allah, befriend whoever befriends him, be the enemy of whoever is his enemy, help whoever helps him, and forsake whoever forsakes him.” The doubters, hypocrites, and those in whose hearts is disease and deviation said: We repudiate before Allah this statement; it is not obligatory; we do not accept that ‘Ali be his minister—this is tribal partisanship from him. Salman, Miqdad, Abu Dharr, and ‘Ammar b. Yasir said: By Allah, we had not left the open place before this verse was revealed: “This day have I perfected for you your religion and completed My favor on you and chosen for you Islam as a religion” [1]. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) repeated that three times, then said: “The perfection of the religion, the completion of the favor, and the Lord’s good pleasure is in my being sent to you with the wilayah after me for ‘Ali b. Abi Talib (peace be upon him).”

Shakir: Or, do they say: He has forged it? Say: Then bring ten forged surahs like it, and call upon whom you can besides Allah, if you are truthful. But if they do not answer you, then know that it is revealed by Allah’s knowledge, and that there is no god but He; will you then submit? (Hud 11:13-14)
English: It has been mentioned earlier from al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) regarding ten verses up to His saying: “Are the two alike in comparison? Will you not then take heed?” [2] So let its meaning be taken from the hadith mentioned under the previous verse [3].
English: /5037 _1- And ‘Ali b. Ibrahim said regarding His saying: “Or do they say…” up to: “if you are truthful”: It refers to their saying that Allah did not command him with the wilayah of ‘Ali, and that he is only speaking about it from himself. So Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: “But if they do not answer you, then know that it is revealed by Allah’s knowledge,” that is, concerning the wilayah of the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him), from Allah.

Shakir: Whoever desires this world’s life and its adornment—We will repay them in full their deeds therein, and they shall not be made to suffer loss therein.
