Al-Kahf Ayah 83-98

99-/6748 _42-

English: 99-/6748 _42- And from him, with his chain from Ali b. Asbat, from Abu ’l‑Hasan al‑Rida (peace be upon him), he said: We heard him—when he mentioned the treasure of the two orphans—say: “It was a tablet of gold on which was written: In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. There is no god but Allah; Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. I am amazed at one who is certain of death—how can he rejoice? I am amazed at one who is certain of destiny—how can he grieve? And I am amazed at one who has seen the world and its turning on its people—how can he incline to it?

And it behooves the one who has understood from Allah not to deem Allah slow in his provision, and not to accuse Him in His decree.” Husayn b. Asbat said to him: To which of them did it pass, to the elder of the two? He said: “Yes.”

English [Quran 18:83–98, M. H. Shakir]: And they ask you about Dhu ’l‑Qarnain. Say: I will recite to you an account of him. Surely We established him in the land and gave him a means of access to everything. So he followed a course. Until when he reached the place where the sun set, he found it setting in a black muddy spring, and found a people there; We said: O Dhu ’l‑Qarnain! either you chastise or you take in them a way of goodness. He said: As for him who is unjust, we shall chastise him; then shall he be returned to his Lord, and He will chastise him with an exemplary chastisement. But as for him who believes and does good, he shall have a goodly reward, and We will speak to him an easy word of Our command. Then he followed a course. Until when he reached the place where the sun rises, he found it rising on a people to whom We had not given any shelter therefrom. Even so! and We had a full knowledge of what he had with him. Then he followed a course. Until when he reached between the two mountains, he found on that side of them a people who could hardly understand a word. They said: O Dhu ’l‑Qarnain! surely Gog and Magog make mischief in the land; shall we then pay you a tribute on condition that you should raise a barrier between us and them? He said: That in which my Lord has established me is better, therefore you only help me with workers; I will make a strong barrier between you and them. Bring me pieces of iron. Until when he had leveled up (the gap) between the two mountain sides, he said: Blow! until when he had made it (as) fire, he said: Bring me molten copper which I may pour over it. So they were not able to scale it nor could they make a hole in it. He said: This is a mercy from my Lord, but when the promise of my Lord comes to pass, He will make it level, and the promise of my Lord is ever true.

Nubata, who said: Ibn al‑Kawwa’ stood up to Ali (peace be upon him) while he was on the pulpit, and said: O Commander of the Faithful, tell me about Dhu ’l‑Qarnain—was he a prophet or a king? And tell me about his “two horns”—were they of gold or of silver? He (peace be upon him) said to him: “He was neither a prophet nor a king, and his two horns were not of gold or of silver. Rather, he was a servant who loved Allah, so Allah loved him, and he was sincere to Allah, so Allah was sincere to him. He was only called Dhu ’l‑Qarnain because he called his people to Allah, Mighty and Majestic, so they struck him on one side of his head; he disappeared from them for a time, then returned to them, and he was struck on the other side of his head—and among you is one like him,” meaning himself.

English: 99-/6751 _3- Ali b. Ibrahim said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) informed [them] of the account of Moses, his attendant, and al‑Khidr, they said to him: Then tell us about the one who traveled round the East and the West—who is he, and what is his story? So Allah revealed: “And they ask you about Dhu ’l‑Qarnain. Say: I will recite to you an account of him. Surely We established him in the land and gave him a means of access to everything.” [Quran 18:83–84, M. H. Shakir]

He (peace be upon him) said: “Some scholars have said: When it descends below the dome, the sphere carries it to the belly of the heaven, ascending continually until it descends to its place of rising—meaning that it sets in a black muddy spring [1]—then it pierces through the earth returning to its rising-place, and it falls down beneath the Throne until permission is given to it to rise; its light is stripped from it every day and it is clothed in another light.”

English: 99-/6753 _5- Ali b. Ibrahim said: Ja‘far b. Ahmad narrated to us, from ‘Abd Allah b. Musa, from al‑Hasan b. ‘Ali b. Abi Hamza [2], from his father, from Abu Basir, from Abu ‘Abd Allah (peace be upon him), who said: I asked him about Allah’s saying, “And they ask you about Dhu ’l‑Qarnain. Say: I will recite to you an account of him.” [Quran 18:83, M. H. Shakir] He said: “Allah sent Dhu ’l‑Qarnain to his people, so they struck him on the right side of his head, and Allah caused him to die for five hundred years. Then He sent him to them after that, and they struck him on the left side of his head, and Allah caused him to die for five hundred years. Then He sent him to them after that, and He made him to rule the Easts and the Wests of the earth—from where the sun rises to where it sets. Thus His saying: ‘Until when he reached the place where the sun set, he found it setting in a black muddy spring…’ to His saying, ‘…with an exemplary chastisement.’ [Quran 18:86–87, M. H. Shakir]—he said: in the Fire. Dhu ’l‑Qarnain then set between them a gate of copper and iron, pitch and tar, and thus blocked them from coming out.” Then Abu ‘Abd Allah (peace be upon him) said: “There is not among them a man who dies until a thousand male children are born to him from his loins.” Then he said: “They are the most numerous creatures created after the angels.”
