Al-Hijr Ayah 43-44
[Quran 15:43-44] And most surely Hell is the promised place of them all. It has seven gates; for every gate there shall be a separate party of them.

99-/5880 _1- Ibn Bābawayh said: Ahmad b. al-Hasan al-Qattān narrated to us, who said: Ahmad b. Yahyā b. Zakarīyā al-Qattān narrated to us, who said: Bakr b. Abd Allāh b. Habīb narrated to us, who said: Muhammad b. Abd Allāh narrated to me, who said: Ali b. al-Hakam narrated to me, from Abān b. Uthmān, from Muhammad b. al-Fudayl al-Zuraqī, from Abū Abd Allāh, from his father, from his grandfather (peace be upon them), who said: “Hell has seven gates: A gate through which Pharaoh, Hāmān, and Qārūn enter; a gate through which the polytheists and unbelievers enter—those who never believed in Allah for the blink of an eye; a gate through which the Banū Umayya enter—this is exclusively for them, none shares it with them; and it is the gate of Lazā, it is the gate of Saqar, it is the gate of the Hāwiya—it drops them down for seventy autumns; and whenever it boils up against them in a surge, it hurls them to its top for seventy autumns [1]; thus they remain so forever, abiding eternally. And a gate through which those who hate us, fight us, and abandon us enter—and indeed it is the greatest of the gates and the most intensely hot.”
Muhammad b. al-Fudayl al-Zuraqī said: I said to Abū Abd Allāh (peace be upon him): “The gate you mentioned—from your father from your grandfather (peace be upon them)—that the Banū Umayya enter through it: is it for those of them who died upon polytheism, or for those of them who encountered Islam?” He said: “May you be bereft of your mother! Have you not heard him say: ‘And a gate through which the polytheists and unbelievers enter’? So that gate is for every polytheist and every unbeliever who does not believe in the Day of Reckoning. And the other gate is the one through which the Banū Umayya enter, for it is exclusively for Abū Sufyān, Mu‘āwiya, and the family of Marwān. They enter through that gate; the Fire will smash them like firewood [2]. No outcry will be heard for them in it; they will neither live therein nor die.”

I shall not cease standing upon the Ṣirāṭ, supplicating and saying: ‘My Lord, grant safety to my Shī‘a, my lovers, my helpers, and whoever showed me loyalty in the abode of this world.’ Then a call from within the Throne: ‘I have answered your supplication, and granted you intercession regarding your Shī‘a.’ And every man from my Shī‘a, and whoever showed me loyalty, supported me, and fought those who fought me—by deed or by word—will intercede for seventy thousand among his neighbors and relatives. And a gate through which the rest of the Muslims enter—those who bear witness that there is no god but Allah—and in whose hearts there is not the weight [1] of an atom of hatred for us, the People of the House.”

99-/5886 _7- Then he said: In the narration of Abū al-Jārūd, from Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him), regarding His saying: ‘And most surely Hell is the promised place of them all’—“this is their standing upon the Ṣirāṭ.” As for: ‘It has seven gates; for every gate there shall be a separate party of them,’ it has reached me—Allah knows best—that Allah made it seven levels: the highest of them is al-Jaḥīm—its people stand upon rough rock therein; their brains boil in it like the boiling of pots with what is in them. The second is Lazā: ‘Plucking out the extremities, it shall call him who turned his back and went away and amasses (wealth) then shuts it up’ [3]. The third is Saqar: ‘It leaves naught, nor does it spare aught; it scorches the mortal; over it are nineteen’ [4]. The fourth is al-Ḥuṭamah: ‘It sends forth sparks as huge as castles, as if they were yellow camels’ [5]; it leaves everyone who reaches it like antimony-powder—yet the spirit does not die; whenever they become like antimony they are returned [to punishment].
[3] al-Ma‘ārij 70:16-18. [M. H. Shakir] Plucking out the extremities, it shall call him who turned his back and went away, and amasses (wealth) then shuts it up.
[4] al-Muddaththir 74:28-30. [M. H. Shakir] It leaves naught, nor does it spare aught. It scorches the mortal. Over it are nineteen.
[5] al-Mursalāt 77:32-33. [M. H. Shakir] It sends forth sparks as huge as castles, as if they were yellow camels.
And the fifth is al-Hāwiya; in it is Mālik, and they call out: “O Mālik, help us!” When he helps them, he makes for them vessels of brass from fire in which is pus—fluid that flows from their skins—as if it were molten metal; when they lift it to drink from it, the flesh of their faces falls into it from the intensity of its heat. And this is Allah’s saying: ‘And if they ask for succor they shall be succored with water like molten brass, which will scald their faces; evil the drink and ill the resting-place’ [Quran 18:29, M. H. Shakir]. Whoever falls into it falls for seventy years in the Fire; whenever his skin is burned, a different skin is replaced upon him.
And the sixth is al-Sa‘īr: in it are three hundred pavilions of fire; in every pavilion, three hundred palaces; [and] three hundred houses of fire; in every house are three hundred types of the torment of the Fire—there are snakes of fire, fetters of fire, scorpions of fire, chains of fire, and shackles of fire. And it is that of which Allah the Exalted says: ‘Surely We have prepared for the unbelievers chains and fetters and a burning fire’ [Quran 76:4, M. H. Shakir].
And the seventh is Jahannam; in it is al-Falaq—a pit in Hell—when it is opened, it stokes the Fire to blaze, and it is the most severe of the Fire’s torment. As for Ṣa‘ūd, it is a mountain of molten brass in the midst of Hell; and as for Athām, it is a valley of melted brass running around the mountain—both are among the most severe of the Fire’s torment.

99-/5887 _8- Ibn Ṭāwūs in (al-Dirū‘ al-Wāqiyah) said: In the book (Zuhd al-Nabī (ṣallā Allāhu ‘alayhi wa-ālihi)) by Abū Muhammad Ja‘far b. Ahmad al-Qummī: When this verse was revealed to the Prophet (ṣallā Allāhu ‘alayhi wa-ālihi): ‘And most surely Hell is the promised place of them all. It has seven gates; for every gate there shall be a separate party of them,’ the Prophet wept intensely, and his companions wept due to his weeping; they did not know what Gabriel (peace be upon him) had brought down to him, and none of his companions was able to speak to him. The Prophet (ṣallā Allāhu ‘alayhi wa-ālihi) would rejoice when he saw Fāṭimah (peace be upon her). So some of his companions went to the door of her house and found barley before her while she was grinding it, saying: ‘And what is with Allah is better and more lasting’ [Quran 28:60, M. H. Shakir]. He greeted her and informed her of the Prophet’s news and his weeping. She arose, wrapped herself in a worn woolen cloak, stitched in twelve places with palm-fiber. When she went out, Salmān al-Fārisī looked at the cloak and wept, saying: “Alas for sorrow! Caesar and Chosroes are in silk and fine brocade, while the daughter of Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah (ṣallā Allāhu ‘alayhi wa-ālihi), wears a worn woolen cloak stitched in twelve places!” When Fāṭimah (peace be upon her) entered upon the Prophet (ṣallā Allāhu ‘alayhi wa-ālihi), she said: “O Messenger of Allah, Salmān marveled at my clothing. By Him Who sent you with the truth as a prophet, for five years I and Ali have had nothing except a ram’s hide—we feed our camel on it by day, and when night falls we spread it out to sleep on; and our cushion is of leather stuffed with palm-fiber.” The Prophet (ṣallā Allāhu ‘alayhi wa-ālihi) said: “O Salmān, my daughter is among the foremost racers.” Then she said: “O Father—may my soul be your ransom—what is it that made you weep?” He mentioned to her what Gabriel (peace be upon him) had brought him of the two preceding verses. Fāṭimah (peace be upon her) fell on her face, saying: “Woe, then woe, to whoever enters the Fire.” Salmān heard and said: “I wish I were a ram for my family—they would eat my flesh and tear my skin—and I would never have heard mention of the Fire.” Abū Dharr said: “I wish my mother had been barren and had not borne me, and I had never heard mention of the Fire.” ‘Ammār said: “I wish I were a bird flying in the deserts, with no reckoning nor punishment upon me, and I had never heard mention of the Fire.” And Ali (peace be upon him) said: “I wish the beasts had torn my flesh; I wish my mother had not borne me, and I had never heard mention of the Fire.” Then Ali (peace be upon him) placed his hand upon his head and wept, saying: “Alas for the length of the journey! Alas for the scarcity of provision! They go forth on the journey of the Resurrection; they wander in the Fire; the hooks of the Fire snatch them; the sick among them are not visited; the wounded among them are not treated; the captives among them are not freed. From the Fire they eat; from it they drink; among its layers they turn; after wearing cotton and linen, they wear the cut-up garments of the Fires; after embracing their spouses, they are chained together with the devils.”

[Quran 15:47] And We will root out whatever of rancor is in their breasts—(they shall be) as brethren, on raised couches, face to face.
