S 104 Ayat 1 to 9

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.

"Woe to every slanderer, defamer, Who amasses wealth and considers it a provision (against mishap); He thinks that his wealth will make him immortal. Nay! he shall most certainly be hurled into the crushing disaster, And what will make you realize what the crushing disaster is? It is the fire kindled by Allah, Which rises above the hearts. Surely it shall be closed over upon them, In extended columns." [Surah Al-Humazah 104:1-9, translation by M. H. Shakir]

99-/11899 Muhammad ibn al-Abbas said: Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Nawfali narrated to us from Muhammad ibn Abdullah ibn Mihran, from Muhammad ibn Khalid al-Barqi, from Muhammad ibn Sulaiman al-Daylami, from his father Sulaiman, who said:

I asked Abu Abdillah (peace be upon him) about the meaning of the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: (Woe to every slanderer, defamer!) [Surah Al-Humazah 104:1, translation by M. H. Shakir].

He (peace be upon him) said: “They are those who slandered the family of Muhammad (Āl Muhammad), denying their rights, defaming them, and occupied a position that the family of Muhammad was more deserving of than them.”

99-/11900 Ali ibn Ibrahim explained the meaning of the Surah. Regarding Allah's saying: (Woe to every slanderer), he said: "It refers to the one who disparages people and belittles the poor." And His saying: (defamer), refers to "the one who turns away his neck and head and becomes angry upon seeing a poor person or a beggar."

And about His saying: (Who amasses wealth and considers it), he said: "He gathers and saves it."

Regarding (He thinks that his wealth will make him immortal), he said: "[He believes his wealth will make him immortal] and preserve him."

Then He said: (Nay! he shall most certainly be hurled into the crushing disaster). "Al-Hutamah (the crushing disaster) is the fire [which] crushes everything."

99-/11900 (continued) Then He said: (And what will make you realize), O Muhammad, (what the crushing disaster is? It is the fire kindled by Allah, which rises above the hearts.) He explained: "It blazes upon the heart."

Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Give glad tidings to the arrogant ones of burning within their chests and being dragged upon their backs."

Regarding His saying: (Surely it shall be closed over upon them), he explained: "It will be sealed shut."

Regarding (In extended columns), he said: "When the columns are extended upon them, by Allah, they will consume their skins."[1]

99-/11901 Al-Tabrisi: Al-‘Ayyashi narrated through his chain from Muhammad ibn al-Nu‘man al-Ahwal, from Humran ibn A‘yan, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), who said:

“Indeed, the disbelievers and the polytheists will reproach the people of Tawhid (monotheism) in the Fire, saying: ‘We do not see your Tawhid benefiting you at all; we and you are equal.’ Then the Lord, the Exalted, becomes displeased for their sake and says to the angels: ‘Intercede.’ Thus, they intercede for whomever Allah wills.”

Then He says to the Prophets: "Intercede," so they intercede for whomever He wills. Then He says to the believers: "Intercede," so they intercede for whomever He wills. Then Allah says: "I am the most Merciful of those who show mercy. Remove [them] by My mercy." Thus, they emerge [from Hell] like moths emerging [from fire].

Then Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) said: "The columns will be extended and sealed over them, and by Allah, that is eternity."

99-/11902 (Kitab Sifat al-Jannah wa al-Nar): From Sa‘id ibn Janah, who said: ‘Awf ibn Abdullah al-Azdi narrated to me, from Jabir ibn Yazid al-Ju‘fi, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him)—in a lengthy narration describing the people of Hell—until he (peace be upon him) said therein:

"Then seventy thousand men will be suspended from every branch of the Zaqqum tree, neither bending nor breaking. Fire enters from their backsides, rising up to their hearts, shrinking their lips, scattering their souls,[1] cooking their skins, melting their fats…"

Then the Ever-Living, the Self-Subsisting (Allah) becomes angry and says:

"O Malik, say to them: (Taste; for We will never add to you aught but chastisement.) [Surah An-Naba 78:30, translation by M. H. Shakir]. O Malik, intensify it, intensify it! My wrath has intensified against those who cursed Me upon My Throne, belittled My rights, while I am the Sovereign, the Almighty."

Then Malik will call out: "O people of misguidance, arrogance, and comfort [2] in the worldly life! How do you find the touch of Saqar?"

He (peace be upon him) said: They reply, "It has burned our hearts, devoured our flesh, and crushed our bones. We have neither a helper nor a rescuer."

Malik says: "By the glory of my Lord, I will add nothing to you except punishment."

They will say: "If our Lord punishes us, He has not wronged us in the slightest."

Then Malik says: (So they shall acknowledge their sins, but far will be forgiveness from the inmates of the burning fire.) [Surah Al-Mulk 67:11, translation by M. H. Shakir], meaning, "Far indeed (from mercy) are the inhabitants of Hellfire."

Then the Almighty becomes angry and says: "O Malik, intensify it, intensify it!" Malik thus becomes angry and sends upon them a dark cloud covering all the inhabitants of Hell. Then he calls out to them, and it is heard by the first and last among them, the farthest [4] and nearest, and he says:

"What do you wish me to rain upon you?"

They say: "Cold water! Oh, our thirst! How prolonged is our disgrace!"

Then he rains upon them stones, iron hooks, sharp spikes, filth (Ghislīn), and worms of fire, which scorch [5] their faces and foreheads, blind their eyes, and crush their bones. At this point, they cry out: "O destruction!"

When only bare bones remain [stripped of flesh], Allah’s wrath intensifies, and He says:

"O Malik, kindle it upon them like wood in the fire."

Then its waves strike their souls for seventy autumns in the Fire. Then Hell seals its doors upon them—from one door to another is a distance of five hundred years, and the thickness of each door is [a journey of] one hundred years. Then each one among them is placed in three coffins of iron [of fire], one inside the other, so their voices will never be heard again. They will only utter therein gasping sounds like the braying of mules, [6] the neighing of donkeys, and howling like the barking of dogs.

Deaf, dumb, and blind—there will be no speech for them in it except groaning. Its gates will be sealed shut over them, and its pillars will close upon them. Neither comfort enters upon them, nor sorrow departs from them, ever. (It is closed over upon them)—meaning, it is sealed shut. No angel will intercede for them, nor will any intimate friend from the people of Paradise. The Lord will forget them, erasing their mention from the hearts of His servants, so they will never again be remembered.

Thus, we seek refuge with Allah, the Mighty, the Pardoner [1], the Merciful, the Compassionate, from Hellfire and what it contains, and from every deed that brings one closer to it. Indeed, He is Forgiving, Merciful, Generous, and Noble."
